I have no idea. Where does he work? I've never met him etc. But he's certainly doing some good plugging right now, with all that talk of port and coffees. Who for chrissake drinks port with pub grub? Echoes of the Vale I'm afraid, just sounds like a member of staff.

Intelligent conversation I can handle, but bitchy comments suggesting people have ulterior motives just makes this forum read like a joke! My flipant comment was a result of reading too many pointless posts from seemingly irate people telling other people that their 'opinions' are wrong! An opinion cannot, by it's nature, be wrong.

Actually, i don't think ?17 is that bad. I am quite happy to hit those prices for good cooking - which it is.

You see, the difference is that this is a destination venue - not just a locals place. That is what the herne does. Go to anywhere serving that quality / size of food and you would pay the same. The customer who goes out to eat once in a blue moon (maybe like you) doesn't get it. Oh, and its full most of the time - which tells you its doing ok.

MsJ - I agree, in that case I have misunderstood you. I can certainly relate to the point about suggesting people have ultierior motives as I was at the end of them! All I wanted to do here was start a discussion and people were immediately pouncing on me the first time I've ever posted.

I like the Palmerston. I've never had a bad meal there, always thought it was pretty good value, and always had adequate service, although I wouldn't say that's their strongest suit. I'm not keen on the Herne - I like their aspirations but imo they are not organised enough to deliver. I also like Franklins, although again I wouldn't say their service is great, and on occasions I've not found many menu dishes that really appealed - that's just my taste, I guess.


However, what I really f*cking hate is when someone comes on here and slags of anybody who disagrees with them, in a sneery and childish way, and simultaneously tries to elevate their own subjective judgment into received wisdom.

Thirded.

I have eaten the set weekday lunch at the Palmeston and found it to be a bargain - can't afford to eat there a la carte. Sadly their excellent Chapel Down is no longer on the wine list due to lack of interest in English wines which is a real shame.


Have also eaten the set lunch at Arbutus - excellent food but extremely small portions - although I guess to be expected at such low prices (it was ?15 for 3 courses when I ate there). Love the way they do wine by the 1/3 of a bottle - gives one the opportunity of trying expensive and unusual wines.


For really good value food I would recommend braving it to Croydon and eating at Albert's Table - before it gets a Michelin star and the prices go sky high!

Are people who take on a dying venture and turn it into a successful restaurant, managing to avoid bankruptcy and failure (as well as the local luddites) in someway guilty of fat-cat behavior if they buy a car?

Do you know what? I bet he does drive a nice car, and I bet he deserves it.

    • I was woken around midnight the other night as a Lime man tried to untangle a heap of three bikes someone had piled on my driveway. They block the pavements and people knock them over in frustration. I wrote to Lime and told them that in future any bikes left near my property would be securely stored away for collection at a mutually convenient time for both parties. I confiscated one at the weekend but a man knocked on our door looking to rent it while I was at work and my son gave it to him! I told Lime it's not fair of them to push the problem on to the local collection depots, they create the problem by allowing users to dump the things wherever they like. If they were penalized for doing so that would put an end to it.
