Posters might be interested in the Bystander Effect, in particular the notorious Kitty Genovese case.

To set your mind at rest, however, Caffine Addict [sic], I heard screaming out the back last night (Barry Road) and it definitely WAS foxes.

Yeh was going to mention that but couldn't remember the name, except I think it was in New York and she was murdered in a stairwell or courtyard overlooked by loads of windows, and none of the neighbours even bothered to call the police, let alone go to help.

does it not go on to say in the Wiki article about the Kitty case that in fact it was completely misrepresented by the press and in there were not as many bystanders as reported, the police were called and most of the witnesses that heard the murder couldn't see it. Further, that the case is still misrepresented in psychology books as an example to students.

Therefore not worth referencing.

It is worth noting that the incidence of urban foxes mating in New York is I believe low, whereas in East Dulwich it has seemed very high - so night-time screams of a particularly agonizing nature are a commonplace here without causing real fears - listen out for words amongst the screams is my advice, and call the police then. [And I really, really wouldn't like to be a vixen]

I was woken up at around 4am last winter to what sounded like a woman screaming. Lay in bed for the first 20 seconds with my heart pounding and trying to make out if, like Penguin suggests, there were any words. Soon realised that the screams weren't quite human. Then realised it could only be a fox (had only recently moved to this area so had never heard foxes like this before). Went to peek out the window and the fox was sitting in the middle of the road, on it's lonesome, making this horrible sound.
It prob was foxes, as i heard same noise again last night not really heard foxes before and certainly didnt know they sounded like human screams! Thanks for all your advice and if i think it is someone in danger then i will defo call the police in future. Thanks again

No idea. Do you think I read it?

    • A shout out for Mark, owner of Pure Plumbers. 07970 971510 They're well established in the Sevenoaks area, but have recently started doing more work in SE London.  Did some v quick and efficient bathroom and boiler fixes for me; have also seen some of the bathrooms he's built, which have a nice attention to detail. • Totally agree regarding not supporting chains. Gail’s was fine but last time I went in Feb this year, actually walked out Fayetteville looking at menu and waiting 15 minutes to even get glass of water and not busy at all. Staff gone down hill - sooner it goes the better… Always prefer to support non chains - so many lovely places with good food to choose from with pleasant staff who know about customer service and sadly, non English which says a lot for our culture, pubs are also becoming abit of a hit and miss affair but maybe just unlucky. At the end of the day all about the chef. Still abit unclear where new place is located - is it down the road from Goose Green where parade of shops are before Peckham Rye?
    • Surely only where the local businesses offer clear advantages, otherwise you are rewarding what should be failure. I want to be served by a better bakery than Gail's, not a worse but local independent one. Certainly give a local independent some time to get the offer right, but don't buy goods which are worse and or more expensive just because the outlet isn't a chain.
    • Let’s just boycott all chains in favour of local businesses.  Places like Gail’s popping up everywhere has a very damaging impact on small businesses. It’s just the same as the new empanadas place but on a bigger scale. I’ll say it a million times more, we hold the power with our choices. Let’s use our power to look after ourselves and our environment (which includes small local family businesses). And yes, I also love Chacarero.
