What is wrong with this forum? (non ED issues being moved to Lounge)

Recommended Posts

It is more work to split it but once split it should hopefully be better and the turnover of the pages would be slower as currently they move too fast.

I forgot to say there would also be a Lost and Found cats section too. Perhaps not, I guess they would go in the wanted section.

Debating chamber may scare people off. I reckon it should be a place for grown up discussion rather than specifically for formal debate though I hope much occurs.

Any good suggestions, I always liked the drawing room, though that might be a bit stuffy too.

I think that's an option for another section GSJ57, but it could be a good idea but Camberwell and Nunhead both have their own forums and we shouldn't take away from them.

So the purpose of the new section/room is for people to discuss general, non East Dulwich specific, issues and not a place for games and silliness. Some will call it boring and so they can stay away, some will try to inject their stupid opinion and then cry foul when they get told off but they should be used to that. Trouble makers will simply be banned from the section at the Chairman's discretion.

Name ideas so far:

Drawing room

Debating room

Back Bar

Non-East Dulwich issues

Discussion Debate

All sensible ideas warmly accepted

Debating room won't be policeable IMO and sometimes the irreverant posts on a worthy thread work fine too although occasionally kill it. And if it does get policed properly irreverant posts - some of which are very funny - will tend to go so we'll be left with valuable information and worthy debates only with less spontanity (good and crap), a pity I think but many probably wont........I don't think the EDF is broke NO TINKERING

I'm not so sure quids. I think it'll be good to have an area where the anything goes mentality is gone. That doesn't mean comment can't be light hearted or witty especially if it helps diffuse tension, but it must be at the least relevant.

With the levels of traffic it will still depend on he user community to police it and report unwanted posts, but it needent be dull and worthy, but serve two purposes of allowing conversation without malicious disruption plus a place to have 'serious' perhaps local issues that aren't ED specific.

I think it'll also allow good threads to remain visible rather than sink beneath the weight of word games and err lighthearted threads.

May I ask then, that the chair (when appointed), be named. It is not the same role as moderator, and I think it's only fair for people to know who their chair is.

I didn't realise people could put their names forward, but I think I'd be interested too. Perhaps, it should change regularly. I know it's a different thing, but when I have been part of a group that has met regularly, and kept the same chair for ages, it became stale, and turned to the chair's agenda. I think it's nice to shake things up occasionally with new blood.

    • The BBC is one of the finest, if not the finest, broadcasters in the world.  They have been admired by many across the world for their journalism.  There have been numerous arrests since their recent expose on convenience shops that cover ups for criminals - money laundering, contraband,  illegal workers and the like. By no means perfect and some of what they have done in the modern world is questionable - the website often comes across as tabloid or sensationalist, as do some of their documentaries, and at times it is full of low grade game shows, fly on the wall etc which bring the punters and money, including overseas, in but is not quality TV.  In their desperation for 'balance' they've given too much air time and credibility to some more extreme views, which contributed to Brexit and some of the rise in right wing parties.  I wish they'd say 'the convicted criminal' every time they talk about Yaxley Lenon. The programme was clumsy, why it didn't go through proper clearance including the lawyers, I don't know.  But it created zero stir at the time. Zero.  And had no impact on the election, so Trump has no case.  I hope they don't cave in like many of the US corporations and media.  Oh and well done to South Park using the small p*nis defence in ridiculing him. What I expect is as the Beeb is pretty centrist in it;s reporting in riles some of those who thrive on the toxic populism we have seen since Trump mark 1 and Brexit.  How sad.
