So I?ve picked up a metro a few times over the last week or so and noticed this comic strip at the back. The one with the goth girl and her hilarious neuroses.

I can?t help but notice that she looks suspiciously similar to Neil Gaiman?s character, Death from the Sandman series.

Funny you should say that, working in Amsterdam at lunch time it was quite a regular occurence for a Dutch person to make a comment that would have all the Dutch in stitches while we'd look at each other and shrug. The exact reverse would also occur alot. Note that we did share alot of humour but certain strands just wouldn't cross the cultural divide at all.

I might add that none of them found the fast show 'he ish my colleague and alsho my lover' sketch in the least bit funny. :)

As it's Friday I feel like a bit of completely unjustifiable generalisation. I have found the Dutch I have worked with to be overwhelmingly straight of beam and steady of purpose. Like motivated Swiss.

Perhaps I have always just met the wrong kind of theDutch. But I put them up there with any of yer northern Europeans for their grim work ethic and need to conform.

At least the Finns, their equal in daytime taciturnity (root Tace: Ltn), all turn into superheroes after midnight and/or three litres of Estonian vodka.

Quite agree ted, they are, on the whole, so far remved from the cliche of the dope smoking chilled anything goes image it's actually funny. They are incredibly open about sex mind you. In fact that was generally the topic of conversation that left the Brits nonplussed.

- yesh, my wife and I had shexual intercourshe lasht night. I had to exshamine my wrist watch twishe before we both came.

Cue hilarity around table among Dutch, embarrassed and confused shuffling among Brits who swear blind they can hear the chirruping of crickets.

    • Big recommendation for Stephen Viccary who has created a magnificent bathroom for us. Quality of work is absolutely top notch. We couldn't be happier - see pics.  Stephen is considerate and tidy meaning working from home during the work was fine (some noise - obviously, it is a demo and installation after all. He does not work on multiple jobs, does a full days work and does ALL the work himself - Tiling, plumbing, lighting (including lighting on a motion sensor under the vanity and in the shower niche - for night time visits 😉), he even changed the door architraves, sorted the badly cracked ceiling and did all the paint work. A full end to end service. Stephen's number - 07941 266 145
    • Highly recommend Dulwich Eco Gardening.  When he came to quote Saied said he’d give our garden back so we could decide what we do next.  Under two weeks of hard work from Saied and Mo and we have the garden back and can see paving I’d forgotten about. Not only did Saied remove our very overgrown greenery. Nature had taken over. He also took back to our fence line overgrown ivy, apple and pear trees and and dealt with a neighbours bamboo that had invaded our garden.  We are now going to get quotes for what we do next so those quoting will be able to see the space.  Saied has suggested someone to quote and will be coming back when he does in case he has any questions or they can work together.  I thought Saied would be a good choice and he was. Quotes from others didn’t leave me with confidence for the end result. That was never a concern with Saied.
    • Having a BBQ (fingers crossed) in 2 weeks and need a small BBQ for veggie bits and any spare benches or garden tables and chairs to borrow to add to mine. Any going? Thanks in advance...
