Need to find a classic south london 'boozer', any ideas?

Recommended Posts

Thanks all, some good suggestions in there.

Although i may body swerve the queen anne red devil! Ta for opening my eyes to 'dodgy boozers' though, great site.

(HonaloochieB, i've been tasked with trying to find a south london pub for a date, and a first date at that!)

He he, The Queen Anne Vauxhall. What a pub.

I used to work across the road in the tall BT building called Camelford House(next to MI6), whence all the BT engineery type blokes (avec beer gut) disgorged into the Queen Anne of a lunchtime to gawp at the strippers. I think male BT employees provided them with the majority of their custom in those days.

I didn't realise it was largely unchanged from those days (late 80s).

You know you are in a real boozer when

(a) you touch the top of any table or run of wood, and

(b) you have to pull away your hand/fingers owing to generalised stickiness.

Because real boozers never clean with soap and water, only with beer. B)

Typical.

Does it finish the portrait of a perfect bog pub with the complimentary pack of starved, rampaging Lurchers, sectarian art adorning the outside with heavily re-inforced iron grills on the windows.

Just thought I'd ask.

Fraid not. It's right opposite Goldsmiths so it's mostly full of art student counting their pennies. It's a great place, three tellys for the footy, if there's no footy they have the racing on. Pool table and very friendly staff and drinkers.

Good isn't it! Do you think it will catch on? As it falls just outside Denmark Hill Village or Bellenden Village, I thought it deserved it's very own village status. Start a facebook group, get a few estate agents on board, forget that it's next to the estate, and bob's your uncle. Think of the house prices.

    • Ah sorry, it was comedy.
    • I have never used AI in my life. It's just notes from my forthcoming monograph on light industry in Dulwich and Camberwell 1879-1946 (dates chosen for obvious reasons).
    • Thank you, this really made me chuckle. It's like you met my brother as he would be the one taking more than his share. Plus the 'pikey' chutney is a winner. Unusual as in can't be identified??? Sadly I'm not the host otherwise I would definitely do that I regularly shop in the Cheese Block and am a fan. But as people have pointed out, there is no cheese shop that charges less based on bulk, so Aldi unusual cheeses may be what the familam receive! Yay, so I can get discounted mouse nibbled cheese still! Oooo, now I do love a Stinking Bishop. It actually offends my stepmum by it's stinkiness but luckily she is not one of the attendees at this particular gathering.  This is blooming genius. It's actually my partner who has the biggest issue with buying in plastic so I will have to hide the wrappers from him!
