whats the point of closing a pub on a monday night or any other night for that matter. reminds me of when i first crossed the water i was living in a place called locksbottom in kent and decided to pop out for a swift half only to be told by the landlady at 1455hrs to make it a swift one as they closed in 5 mins, took me a while to get over that one, i thought the days of pubs closing during the day were long gone, obviously not.
Having read good reports on Hoopers on this forum I was looking forward to visiting them - unfortunately the first time I went on a Thursday afternoon they were closed (don't open till 5.30 or so) and last Saturday when I went at about twenty to six in the evening there was only one person in the place, and he was standing behind the bar, so I gave it a miss. I hope I'm wrong but my current impression is that there isn't much future for Hoopers.
Mr/ Mrs Hoopers - if you are reading this - I like what you've done and hope there is a future for you. Why don't you paint the outside, though, after Brad did such a good, sensitive job on the interior? And you could give the day-glo sheets of paper tacked in the window a miss too. It looks a bit... temporary... if you know what I mean.

They do ales. Usually a Harvey's plus a couple of guests. Have always been good quality in my experience.

Nice selection of unusual bottled belgians, porters etc too.

As I've said a couple of times, I for one am glad of a proper pub nearby (in greater East Dulwich*) but it's off the beaten track and needs a good pool of regulars to make it work.

Jamie's and his lady are new to this game from what he's said and it'll be a very steep learning curve. I wish him all the best.

*Alan, if you missed it you'll enjoy this.

    • Crawthew Grove was always full of rubbish when Poundland was there and it's been refreshingly free of it since they've moved in. I hope it stays like this, but have a feeling it's going to get worse again with Tesco.
    • Hello, does anyone have a spare stair gate I could borrow for a few days while a friend visits with her toddler?
    • Shame, that's a bit boring. At least the Poundland fulfilled the need of cheap basic toiletries.
    • Andy Burke Plumber  December 2025 Andy was recommended and I'm so glad he was! I generally don't like inviting strangers into my home for any reason really but when you have a repair you have no choice. Andy is a kind, very pleasant  decent guy. But most of all he's, trustworthy, very knowledgeable and extremely conscientious about his work! He wants to solve the problem for you and keep the customer happy. He was very kind to work around my schedule to sort my repairs. I live alone and I'm very comfortable in his company. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. He's what you want in a tradesman. Someone who's decentand really talented. I'm so glad I crossed paths with him. Andy goes the extra mile to resolve your issue. Don't think twice, just book him!! 07983 688451
