Maiden name vs married name

Despite the seeming attaction in gender equality terms, going double-barrelled is simply impractical because a couple of generations down the line you might get eight-barrelled names. I've heard that some people are now opting for "blended" surnames, ie taking part of of yours and joining it to part of you better half's. Ms Barlow weds Mr Johnstone and they become Mr and Mrs Barstone. Could be fun to explore the possibilities, especially if it throws up several nice sounding options. You keep alive part of both families names. On the downside it could be a real non-starter if the names just do not match!
