I am at present happily using "Windows 7 Home Premium".

Have any of the Computer wizards on the forum using, or have used "Windows 10" and what is their opinion ?

I am in a quandary, should I accept download and install the free upgrade to "Windows 10" as recommended by "Microsoft", or stay with "Windows Seven" ?.

Your views and opinions would be much appreciated

I took the initial step to reserve Windows 10 and then later my PC tried to auto update to windows 10

every time I shut down. All attempts failed and I had to go through a lengthy procedure to prevent this from happening again

Files need to be uninstalled and then Once you are done, it is important that you block these updates from being found and installed again by Windows Update. If you don't do this and have automatic updates enabled, they may be installed again on the system.

Windows 10 may not be compatible with some graphics card and some apps. might not run..

I have stuck with Windows 7..

If you upgrade, you have a month within which time you can revert back to 7

I did it but don't let it default during setup as it has a lot of tracking and reporting options built in, instead go for the customised option and then disable options you aren't happy with

Worth seeing and experimenting with but the choice is yours

Oh and if you use the XP virtual machine to run older applications then you will have fun as 10 doesn't come with a virtual machine but you can install and run one !

I have windows 10 installed, I downloaded the software and upgraded as a clean install and used my windows 8.1 product key, you can upgrade directly from 7, 8 or 8.1,if you want the easier option.

It looks like a mix of 7 and 8, lots of customization's to suit your own needs. If you have home premium then there is no way to avoid automatic updates.

I have had no issues with this build, runs faster than 7 or the 8's, 7 has just come out of support from Microsoft, updates and security patches continue until January 2020.

The new replacement for Internet explorer (edge) is nice I.E has no more support for versions up to number 11.

It's free so I would go for it, If you do have any graphics card issues try using the drivers from 8.1 but Microsoft has been improving the availability of drivers with every new build, i am in the "insiders program" and run the new build in a virtual machine great stuff!!

RC I have Home premium and you Can avoid auto updates..

For Windows 10 ...

Tap on the Windows-key on the keyboard, type programs and features, and hit enter. This opens the list of software installed on the system.

Switch to "view installed updates" on the left side of the window.

If you are using Windows 7, locate the following updates: 3035583, 2952664, 3021917

If you are using Windows 8, locate the following updates: 3035583, 2976978

Right-click one update after the other and select uninstall from the context menu.

Select Restart Later when the prompt appears and remove all updates first from the system.

Once done, restart the computer to complete the process.

Once you are done, it is important that you block these updates from being found and installed again by Windows Update. If you don't do this and have automatic updates enabled, they may be installed again on the system.

To block these updates, do the following:

Tap on the Windows-key, type Windows Update, and hit enter.

This should open the Windows Update dialog.

Select "check for updates" to find new updates to install on the system. Windows should find the updates listed above again.

Click on the "important update is available" link.

Right-click each of the listed updates above that are listed on the page and select hide update from the context menu.

This blocks the update from being installed on the system.

I have Windows 10. It's OK in terms of usability - maybe too much there - OS should be simple.

Not sure yet - I don't really find it faster - but recently internet seems slower everywhere.

It's going the way of UK Steel I think. I have 16Gb memory and i7 too.

I would still say nothing wrong with Windows 7 - still best proved version of windows

but MS is trying to force the upgrade it seems.

  • 1 month later...

I installed on my laptop a week ago, having ignored the pop up for months. Glad I did, much better than the version I was running before (7, or 8 maybe - whatever it was, it was awful!). Hasn't slowed my laptop down at all, much more user friendly in my opinion.

Womanofdulwich, you shouldn't need anyone to do it for you. Just follow the prompts and leave it to do it's thing. Took about an hour on my laptop.

I took the early option to reserve Windows 10. and later got an Alert from Microsoft hat Windows had been

downloaded and was ready to be installed...

... I did nothing but every time I shut down Windows attempted to instal Windows 10. This took ages and the instal failed. So I had to wait a couple of hours before I could turn off my PC>

... I then removed the Files for The Windows 7 - 10 Upgrade and all was fine..

My version of Windows 7 was itself an upgrade from Vista. (That terrible OS that replaced the wonderful Windows XP.)

I now have a Windows Logo on my task bar (Get Windows 10)

I am not convinced Windows 10 will instal and I really dont want to through all that palava again.

    • Most churches rent out halls for children's' parties but rarely adult parties, Christ Church only does afternoon parties,   The East Dulwich Community centre hires out halls to 9 pm only and all music needs to be on a sound restrictor as is in a residential area. St Johns with St Clements have a small hall but not sure if they allow adult parties. Nunhead Green has a newish community centre with a couple of different size halls. Most places seem to charge around £40 ph  with a deposit of £100/200 (returned if no damage or excess cleaning needed.
    • Hello, Recently there have been various comments made on the forum which have resulted in heated discussions being had. I for one, hold up my hand and wanted to personally thank whoever is keeping the forum going.. remember when it was likely to close. We are all adults and should known when it is right to continue or just ignore or if really feel it necessary comment via pm. I have had a long relationship with the forum and have bought, sold, offered advice and in deed made friends on the forum over the years. It is a public forum after all and everyone is entitled to express their opinion and is also free. I am not as tech minded as most but with the season of good will approaching and-knowing in this economic climate how many people are  struggling, I  thought it would be a lovely idea, to perhaps set up a just giving page to raise funds for a local charity who might appreciate a contribution towards their Christmas festivities… On a practical side, might just be to complicated to administer as I am sure all have charities that we support so my other thought was not me, as I am useless but to set up a just giving page and whatever monies are raised, perhaps contribute to the festivities that use to be run by local shops or whatever.. Maybe even use a local church hall and just make it special for perhaps folk that find it difficult to access events or no access for say wheel chair users.. guess really, one is looking for guidance from the church and of course volunteers. Shoot me down if you must or feel the need but this is my view and no, sadly I won’t be around in the months before Christmas but can help remotely.
