why is the ability to edit my profile currently allowing me only access to my real name?

It should allow you to access and change your email, password, signature, privacy options too. Are you not able to see those?

You can change your password by clicking the link that says "Change Password" on the left.

The change username option is only available irregularly for a brief period when someone has to change their name for security reasons. It is difficult to administer so we do not do it very often.

Well I've been accused of writing a paranoid posting by someone whose name does not contain any letters but only symbols. Perhaps it's he who used to be known as Prince. I felt like a name change to reflect the fantasy land I exist in whilst communicating on a forum where for all I know every other character could be computer generated. I'm like this everyday!

9:35 minutes is the average time on the Site

Last Monday there were 2,989 unique user on the site (it is about 2,800 a weekday average, 2,300 at the weekend)
