Not nearly as macho as you big guy. I've got to chuckle at many of the posters on here, if you have the audacity to challenge their views they get all self righteous. And worse still they feel they have to stick up for a talentless man who earns over ?6 million a year. Who says we're not obssessed with celebrity.

Of course you entitled to your opinion as am I, I think he is mediocre in the extreme, and there are far more people in the world deserving of more money in their paypackets let alone the obscene amounts he gets. Who says we're not obssessed with celebrity, god help us all if this what we've sunk to.

How do you judge what salary someone is "worth"? The fact is that we live in a society where the value of labour, services, products - in fact almost anything - is determined by how much people are willing to pay. It's a free market economy. Let's see how much money Sky offer him!

Yeah it sticks in the throat that some people earn millions, but what do you want to do about it? Would you rather have a communist "wage grid" system for everyone?

I'm not sure why your negative opinion should somehow supercede anyone's positive one atila?

As bob said this sort of thing is totally subjective (although sounds like we all agree that he was being paid too much, but sadly not a damn thing we can do about it, I used to get just as annoyed by Ericsson's wage for mediocrity in his field).

For the record I thought he was an excellent film reviewer, he helped me become genuinely passionate about cinema, especially the more alternative films when he was on channel four with The Incredibly Strange Film Show. The Jackie Chan episode was a classic (before jackie made more mediocrity in Hollywood).

I wasn't a big fan of the chat show (or the format full stop) though it was passable entertainment especially if he had genuine rapport with a guest. It was more the awful obsequious nature of the 'big name' interviews like Maddonna that annoyed me; god if ever someone deserved taking down a peg or two, or actually yet laughing at themselves, it's her. Whereas others like Dustin Hoffmann with genuine humility were actually little bit revealing and entertaining.

Obviously somewhat ambivalent then, in summary, breezes.

In that case your argument is purely one of taste/opinion... which is fair enough, everybody has one. But don't make it out to be something more than that!

Unfortunately while it may be about taste/opinion, there is more to this than that. Namely that as a society we seem to have persons that feel he deserves it and feel sufficiently moved to defend him. WTF is going on there?

Thought you said you ignored me, oh sad one.

How do you judge what salary someone is "worth"?

This made me think of house prices. The same pile of bricks that was worth ?100k 15 years back, now "worth" ?400k, because someone is willing to pay that to live there.

Like Ross or not, lots of people watch him, so the beeb must have believed it was "worth" paying him that much to bring in the viewers / listeners.

Simple as.

Oh, and this isn't a football thread, so for those who are just jumping in and making it worse, stop it.

The likes of *bob* and David are able to stick up for themselves, and if they find Atila that out of order, they can report him.

Atila, you are getting a little bit overly angry about this though, it really doesn't matter that much.

Keef - Its not about bob and David. Its about being able to read an interesting thread without it being littered with FFS and WTF etc and generally aggressive comments.

That's rich coming from a man ure fan who uses his butt hole to talk out of. Just ignore me, but you can't can you. Bless

Yep, pretty much. It's the same with most things. How else can you judge what something is worth, other than what someone will pay for it?

Whether someone "deserves" a salary or not... that's a different matter, but since when was salary correlated with contribution to society?

Erudite as ever Atila. Personally I think Wossy should be laughing all the way to the bank. On the one hand I can't stand my license fee being spent so freely on him, although I do find him funny when I watch him, on the other if they offered it to me I'd bite their hands off so who can blame him.

Admit it, you can't ignore me can you, bless your little cotton socks. Erudite enough for you?

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
