the latest Friday Cities newsletter (from the ex-The Friday Thing people) raises a contentious issue about our borough:

WHICH BOROUGH HAS THE BEST LOOKING INHABITANTS?

Out in East Dulwich last night, it struck me that, overall, East

Dulwich does not appear to sport a particularly good-looking

populace. Not as bad as Nunhead, obviously. But there is a grimy,

potatoey sheen to most of the people you see on the streets of

SE22. Now, I?m no Adonis myself. But there?s no doubt the

inhabitants of some other areas of town are more consistently

pleasing to the eye. On the Kings Road or on Battersea Rise, for

example, the overall radiance of passer-bys ? male and female ? is

high. Islington, too, isn?t bad.

So is there a best looking borough? And why are some better than

others? Is it just wealth or youth?

How very dare he?

Actually, we are particularly radiant over here in West Dulwich. I myself am simply stunning - even without Botox (I am reliably informed that everyone else has it by the bucket), you simply could not buy cheek bones like mine.

Perhaps you in East Dulwich should drink more Evian?

Only for so long. After a while they'll find themselves crying out for a bit of genetic diversity.

(I wonder what the smallest practicable population for a suitably diverse gene pool might be... actually, no I don't. It's almost 10pm and just not the right time to start musing on such things.)

So a scotsman is acusing our local populace of a potatoey sheen.

If (s)he means we're a bit pale then they may have a point, but obviously irony is not their strong point.

Are they accusing us of being irish? poor choice of lingo old chap, and Mrs O'Mockney hates potatoes.

Are they accusing us of not being image obsessed, botox* injecting fuckwits?

Fine by me. Roll on the normal people of East Dulwich.

*no offence dulwichmum. I trust you won't get your ?70,000 white bikini bottoms in a twist ;)

No Mr Mockney,

Why should I be offended. I am Botox free although I am self obsessed it is true. You are gorgeous, Brendan is gorgeous, well all of the forumites I have met are gorgous - even Mr Batdog is gorgous as far as I am concerned - but I have not met him to confirm this. I am sure that this dreadful man was in fact talking about Brixton or Peckham or even Mitcham. The residents of Dulwich (North, West and East - why is there no South?) we are all honey's!

How dare tyhese people offend your value system. l'll get to work in it right away.

Yes, generations of poor nutrition, hard work, low pay and unhealthy eating do take their toll- Dont worry though, Ill have a word with these troglodytic proles and ask them to move to Dagenham or somewhere they may be more at home, and you can sort out the migration of Beautiful people into the area.

Ethnic cleaning for ED.

I usually see some lookers when I'm out and about.... That said, I'm usually rather drunk, so they could be complete mingers without the beer goggles :-S

    • I don't know how it works now but my late parents had little money when they were retired (just state pension and they rented their flat) and they used to take their cat to the Blue Cross (In Victoria if I remember correctly) where treatment was free for those who could'nt afford a private vet. I sincerely hope similar is available still because for many elderly their pet is their main source of comfort and company.
    • In a couple of places locally, I have come across this. I am fairly sure that they attempt to do the bill in their head. If you just say , “no, I think it’s x” they start again and get to an agreeable number, or find a calculator. I don’t think it’s a malicious attempt to swindle people. Just not great arithmetic.
    • There are excellent charities like the Greenwich Wildlife Network who will help if you report any concerns with local wildlife. Foxes are wonderful creatures who had been forced into our town and cities and are just doing their best to survive, we should take care of them when we can.
    • Like I thought… prob like that for most of the day.. especially after people had walked their dogs, with friends, relatives  kids…
