Hi all, if you see this “charity” We R Blighty, who collect for homeless veterans, do not give them money. I saw them outside M&S on Lordship Lane this week.

They are under investigation by Kent police, they do not donate the majority of your money, rather they pocket up to 60%.

Post in Dulwich Park Lake bridge
I think it means it would be cheaper to replace it than repair it.

Looks like it's the actual structure under the walkway that's rotten.

Did anyone have their brown bin emptied yesterday?

I filled in a missed collection form yesterday and still not emptied.

I'm about to buy something online from Back Market and the only delivery option is 'royal mail' .  I'm hoping once I buy it I'll get a message with tracking info but it doesn't specify, it just says arrives within 2 working days.

Mail delivery has still been terrible in our area (Lacon Road SE22) but a neighbour told me it's now better for parcels as they tend to prioritise them. Has anyone had parcels delivered either on time - or late??

I know it is a long road but we are looking near the cemetary area. Is that safe to walk around at night, are there lots of burglaries/car thefts etc?

Also what's the traffic and airplane noise like?

I saw people queuing up one night a couple of years ago and it looked to me like it was an old theatre or music hall

Actually it's an old department store, after it's closure as a night club there are plans to develop it into a decent venue

Any views or memories.  Peckham continues to develop at pace.

Anyone know what's going on with Il Mirto on Melbourne Grove?

Not sure if they are redecorating or closed down as the dining area is being ripped out. I've only passed in the evening when no one is around so haven't been able to ask.

If you have any experience dealing with local authority or insurance company please can you private message me, as I would appreciate advice and to hear from someone who's been successful in having a tree causing damage removed from the pavement outside house.

I love trees but it doesn't seem sensible to have planted species which are growing or will grow into tall/large trees and need somewhere for their roots to grow... huge problem in this area (stumps and empty patches in pavements galore) especially with clay soil already causing some soil movement.

Thanks and hopefully no rude replies. Seem to be some on here with too much time, ready to attack or with sarcastic comments.

Post in EDT - Under Refurbishment
Went to the EDT last night for their 50% off menu launch and it was delicious! Their starters were excellent - we had the aubergine & the Korean chicken, highly recommend 🤩 it’s definitely more on the pricier side now food-wise,  but has a lovely vibe still as a pub one side and then a restaurant the other side (similar to The Palmerston). Looking forward to going back ☺️

Dulwich Park Lake bridge
It’s still “under essential repair”, if that translates to “no action whatsoever being taken and no update at all being given”.
I wrote to Helen Hayes and CCd one of my councillors (the one who actually ever replies).
Please do the same if you’re cheesed off at this lack of action. You can find your representatives via WriteToThem.

South Circular roadworks - excessive disruption
I've just received a note from TFL (I'm in Underhill) to say that access to the South Circular going West from Lordship Lane - and probably East as well (now virtually the only access since Dulwich Village was cut-off) is to be severely curtailed from the end of February to mid June so that the much sought after pedestrian crossing at the London Road/ A205 Junction can be installed. Taking 3 and a half months of disruption! Anywhere else in the world this would be a week's job.

I'm sorry, but this is an absolute disgrace! The A205 (the jocularly named South Circular) is an artery (a pretty sclerotic one, but the only one we've got!) for East: West connectivity for us South East Londoners - to effectively turn it into a three and half month traffic jam through the borough is appalling, and shows just how much (lack of) care the powers that be have for us.

I'm absolutely in favour of an improved crossing here - but I note that our councillors appear to have done nothing but acquiesce in TFL's proposal - clearly they simply don't care about the costs in both social and commercial traffic that will be imposed on us. For work that should not take this sort of time at all! The complexity will be on the timings of the new lights to allow passage of vehicles and people, and that can be worked out (will be worked out) at a work-station in an office. The rest is simple wiring. And probably, whilst they're there, some resurfacing to redefine road and pavement. Which does not take  three and a half months! Unless you are lazy and incompetent idiots unable to plan simple works.

I wonder, over that three and a half months of disruption, just how few workers, on how few days, we may expect to see actually 'working' there? But what matters, so long as they're happy and unstressed!

As usual we, the idiots paying for this, can go hang! And look forward to the endless jams polluting our atmosphere.

Just gone passed Love Dulwich cafe on the bus and there’s a sign outside stating “new Turkish restaurant opening soon”

I spoke to the owner today and unfortunately due to the cost of living and the extremely high rent & rates on the lane (his are almost £100k) the cafe model isn’t working. Rather than give up and close down, he’s done quite a bit of research and is indeed going to reopen / rebrand as a Turkish restaurant from 14th March.

He will be open lunch times (with lunch specials) and evenings with a selected Turkish grill & meze menu (plus veggie & vegan dishes).

He’s a lovely chap and has a few businesses including a Turkish bakery in Penge so knows his stuff.

Personally I’m sad that he’s closing as a cafe but extremely happy and excited he’s reopening as a Turkish restaurant.

I was surprised to learn that East Dulwich Picturehouse now only screens PG-rated films for their baby-friendly showings, unlike other Picturehouse branches. Apparently, this change happened after a complaint to the council about showing films above a PG rating to infants. Afaik, this policy only applies to this  branch.

As a local parent, I find this frustrating. It limits our options, especially when many of us would love the chance to watch a wider range of films while caring for our little ones. For example, during Oscar Week, only one vintage film is being shown. Are we really expected to only consume toddler-focused content, like Cocomelon?

I also worry about the precedent this sets. If other institutions, like the Tate or the National Portrait Gallery, applied similar restrictions, parents could be left with only child-oriented content. Babies under one don’t fully comprehend adult themes, so shouldn’t there be more flexibility?

I’d love to hear what others think—should this policy be reconsidered?

Hey all,

Does anyone know how best to contact The Dulwich Estate or Stonegate? I'm a local entrepreneur with an idea for redeveloping the Derelict Grove Tavern.

Thanks,

Dean

Does anyone have an update? They were supposed to be finished by January. There is still fencing everywhere and a huge puddle/pond in the south west corner. No sign of a “bund” either. Nothing on Southwark website.

Round-robin letter received this week regarding this. Main points are that the number of new homes is being reduced from 877 to 867. OK, not much change there, but....

"A reduction in the number of affordable homes from 270 (35% by habitable room) to 77 (12% by habitable room)"

That's a 72% reduction in the number of affordable homes.

I don't know a lot about this kind of thing, but it seems that just 77 affordable homes in a development of 867 is a massive pee-take in an area where a 1-bed flat is £400K+ if it isn't "affordable."

If you're interested, the application can be viewed at https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/ ref 24/AP/2074 and there's a lot of objections to the reduction in affordable homes.

The drop-in sessions are Weds 26th Feb (Peckham Library) and Mon 3rd March (All Saints Church) at 3pm. Full details attached.

Hi all,

We recently had the front badge stolen from our VW Golf, the car sensor is kept behind the badge and was also stolen. This was two weeks ago and since then have noticed other VWs around ED had also had the same issue, a badge and sensor stolen.

We've been quoted over £1000 from our local VW garage to replace these.

I am aware this has been going on for some time in South London generally (https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/04/vw-cars-parts-theft-cruise-control-sensors-insurance-golf-passat), which leads me to think...

a.) It's VWs issue for this terrible design fault so why should we pay

b.) If we do get a new sensor and badge the same thing will surely happen again, thus leading to further costs down the line

I wonder if anyone else who had this issue is on the group? And how they dealt with VW? They are being very unhelpful and in our most recent correspondence said we 'should have kept the car in a garage' 🫠

Was meeting a friend for lunch today in ED and thought I’d make a quick visit to the Poundland beforehand as my usual store I visited closed down in Camberwell last year.

As soon as I entered was confronted by very loud beat music blaring away (couldn’t wait to get out) and no staff around to serve on the till. The 3 self service tills were all closed so had to wait over 5 minutes to pay. Just hope they can up their game as they have a prime position in ED.

Our Labrador has spent the night at vets after a tsunami of vomit and tummy pain. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it could be related to WW1 conditions on Peckham Rye, specially as dogs love to lap at those undraining puddles?

Four little goslings by the pond,  with their mum and dad keeping a close watch on them yesterday!

It seems very early? Apparently they were born last week, and there were five then 😭

Let's hope the rest of them escape what I presume was the heron.

Some contractors are cutting down the beautiful cherry tree by the junction near Colyton Rd/Forest Hill Rd corner. The one they damaged for the Gala Festival. I don’t remember any signs up about it. There were a couple of locals trying to talk to them but the contractors became quite aggressive and threatening.

To start us off, there is a new Deli called Chili & Garlic opening up next to Gails on Zenoria St.

Website: https://www.chilliandgarlic.co.uk/

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chilliandgarlicdeli?

There is a menu on the website and it appears to sell wraps, bowls and fruit juices.

The opening is not yet announced, but probably soon.
