  1. The new tenants have been selected, but due to poor planning between the completion of the build and the selection (Well done Parks Dept),it'll be toward the end of september before it opens. The new tenants are a local couple with lots of enthusiasm and a lot of catering industry experience. I'm sure it'll be worth the long wait. :)) I'll try to find out the official opening date.
  2. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 13 AUGUST 2007 For further information contact: David Lloyd on 020 7924 7555 or 07855 956061(M) or Zoe Scott at Southwark Council on 020 7525 7308 SPONSORS AND COUNCIL COMMITTED TO NEW BOYS' ACADEMY FOR EAST DULWICH A new boys' Academy is still planned for East Dulwich but changes being made to the design of the proposed building mean that the planning process will happen later than anticipated. The sponsor, The Harris federation of South London Schools, has committed to making changes to the design of the proposed building, which will mean that the school will open later than anticipated. A spokesperson for The Harris Federation of South London Schools said: 'We are firmly committed to a new boys' Academy in East Dulwich . Parents want a first class school with high standards in the area and we are working towards making it a reality as soon as we can. 'Designs for the new Academy building were submitted to the council in June and following feedback from local residents we've agreed to consider a number of possible improvements to the design. The redesign is about responding to community concerns. These changes will take some time to complete and as a result the planning process will now take longer than anticipated. 'We have been working closely with the council to try to open the Academy early in temporary accommodation in September 2008, which would mean including the Academy in the admissions round that begins in September 2007. However, we feel it would be unfair to students and other schools if we agreed to open in 2008 without the security of knowing when the new buildings would be ready for occupation, and therefore a decision has been made not to open the Academy in temporary buildings in 2008. 'We will continue to consult with parents and residents and keep them informed of progress so that we can work together in the best interests of education in the borough.' Cllr Caroline Pidgeon, Southwark Council's executive member for children's services and education, said: 'We are all committed to building a high quality boys' school in East Dulwich, which is much needed and has been well supported for many years by the local community. We are working hard to make sure the school is open in 2009 on a temporary site and in a permanent building in 2010. 'While we are all disappointed that the Academy won't be opening early in temporary accommodation in September 2008, it's important to take the time to get things right. 'The Harris federation is listening and responding to community concerns so that they can build a high quality Academy and community facility that everyone can be proud of and that can help improve the standards of education for local boys.' Declan, No-one is excluded with the obvious exception of homophobes! and only then because I'm sure most peoples idea of a pleasant evening having drinks with new friends wouldn't include trying to either defend themselves or swap pleasantries with a bigot. Having a common interest isn't monopolised by gays when organising such events, single parents (Gingerbread), women (WI), men (lads night out) etc. None of which are generally intended for meeting prospective partners (within the group), that's not saying it couldn't happen. I'll be going to have a laugh with a lesbian friend and my ever so heterosexual faghag, both of whom I've no intention of having a relationship with other than as friends (and bloody good ones at that). Yes there are 'gay forums', but does that mean that gays should be restricted to those or that EDF should be for straights only ? Come along, have a laugh and if you can find a left handed ginger haired person with a twitch in their right eye and at least one wooden leg, bring them too. :)-D

  9. It was indeed a suicide. I got a call from the park manager this morning to inform me. A man hanged himself from the rafters of the Japanese shelter. The police have identified him, but have not released any details as yet. No-one else is thought to be involved.
  10. Peckham Rye Park boasts a fruiting Mulberry Tree. Go through the main entrance, round the oval and head south. The Mulberry tree is on the left as you turn in towards the Japanese Garden. :))
  11. The cafe was designed by local architects and park users, Knox Bhavan who also designed the Russell Square Cafe. The tenders for running the cafe have been reviewed and there are two very strong forerunners, but as they haven't been told yet, it'd be unfair to say who. What I can say, is that one of them is local, well known and has a proven track record in providing good food and a high quality of service. The latest on timescale is that the cafe should be open at the end of august/ early september. The recycling bins are to be relocated and The Pulse people are not in the running. The building will also house two sports changing room facilities at the rear.
  12. Just to add, for your friends coming from North of the river, The Rye will probably be the easiest to get to, especially by public transport. close to Peckham Rye stn and 12,63,363,37,343,78, P12 busses all stop near by too. (Under 21 strict 6pm curfew though)
  13. Isn't Dominic, from The Elms (Corner of Peckham Rye Park Colyton Rd/Peckham Rye) the owner of TILT and all those properties?
  14. Hi Dominika, Speak to Mary, lives in the corner house with the black labrador, she'll be very helpful. Joe

  16. I know it's a fair old hack, excuse the pun, but there's a great stables and riding school in Bexley called Mount Mascal (sp?) It's about ?20 per hr for a group lesson or ?25 for a 1 to 1, hacks are based on length of time, starting at about ?22.

And fortunately it's because of that, that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not considered of type.

The council should know this! Re Southwarks intent - Since the signs were erected last November, it has been denied and confirmed. Apparently now the signs were a 'PRINTING ERROR' by the sign makers. More like a Parks Management error!
  21. Dog owning residents in Camden can breath a sigh of relief, as Camden Council have reworked their proposed dog control orders, after consultation with KC Dog, the national dog owner?s group run by the Kennel Club. Under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act, which came into force in 2006, local authorities have had increased powers over dog owners all over the UK, and are able to issue dog control orders. Originally it seemed Camden?s proposed dog control orders would have meant dogs would have had to be kept on leads in parks and open green spaces (not designated as dog exercise areas) and excluded from monuments and shrubbery. In addition dog control orders were proposed to limit the number of dogs a person would have been allowed to walk together. Dog control orders such as these could have had serious implications for the animals? welfare, as dogs require vigorous exercise, which would be compromised if they were not allowed to be exercised off the lead. Since taking deputations in the Council from KC Dog, and concerned KC Dog participants, Camden Council is now limiting dog control orders to dog fouling, keeping dogs on leads only when directed to do so, and excluding dogs only from areas such as children?s play areas and flower beds. In addition Camden Council will only issue fixed penalty notices to dog owners if they refuse to comply with requests from authorised officers. http://www.swindon.gov.uk/dogcontrolorders Southwark Council could learn a lot from both Camden and Swindon Councils.
  22. The amendment to The Dangerous Dogs Act 1997 covers the inclusion of four banned breeds Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 prohibits four types of dog: the Pit Bull Terrier the Japanese tosa the Dogo Argentino the Fila Brasileiro The wikapedia discription of Pit Bull type which includes Staffordshire Bull Terriers, may have some credance in the US, but that description is not recognised by any official UK agency, be it government or animal welfare. Breed specific legislation has already been shown to be flawed, citing court cases brought by the CPS on behalf of Liverpool Police Authority and subsequently dismissed because of the ambiguity of breed or type descriptions and the inability of prosecutors to prove type. Thus rendering the DDA inaffective. The point of this topic, isn't necessarily about preventing authorities from addressing dogs 'running wild' ,out of control or stray dogs, which the Southwark Animal Warden service ought to deal with (and Yes Southwark does have animal wardens, if you weren't aware)or to prevent authorities from addressing fouling, but is to oppose the introduction of new laws which will affect responsible owners. Laws that were created to allow local authorities to impose regulations without having to go through the previously more stringent bylaw introduction process, as described in the Clean Neighbourhoods Act and Fouling (by dogs)of the Land Act. Excert from the Countryside Code By law, you must control your dog so that it does not disturb or scare farm animals or wildlife. On most areas of open country and common land, known as 'access land' you must keep your dog on a short lead on most areas of open country and common land between 1 March and 31 July, and all year round near farm animals. So, dogs being better of in the countryside than in cities is therefore subjective. Dog control orders do not apply to working dogs or guide dogs. and finally Cats? I don't see how cats are affected by this discussion. I've never seen a cat in our local park or any other park and don't know of any cat owner who clears their cats faeces from public land, that's not saying there isn't any.

As I've > said,if the only excercise the dog has is to run > wild in a park the maybe it's the owner punishing > the dog I assume you then see no distinction between a dog being off lead and a dog running wild? Throwing a ball in a public park for example, for a dog to retrieve, is a dog running wild?
  24. ruffers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Laws are made to deal with those > who break them. No! Penalties and punishments are established to deal with those who break the law!

Asset Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There is already a law which states that > Staffordshire type dogs must be on a lead in > public places but that is ignored. Sorry, but you're confusing Staffordshire Bull Terriers with Pit Bull Terriers (Dangerous Dogs Act). There is no law as such in reference to Staffs.
