annaj replied to georgia's topic in The Lounge
Oh? And what would your choice be? You know, just supposing you somehow ended up drunk enough... -

Yes. And last I think. I have a lovely image of SeanMacGabhann slurring through My Way... -

Well done Georgia and Michael, for making order out of chaos and not being reduced to quivering wrecks along the way. Just one thing though, the picture on the website shows a banner saying "KARAOKE EVERY FRIDAY" This could be a forum drinks unlike any other... -
Blimey! Can't make it tonight, but will be along soon, the food at The Garrison was always great.

This is an example of *Bob*'s law. Originally applied to the thorny issue of class, but equally valid with any other demographic group. Some parents are rude and inconsiderate (cocks) and some are not. Some non-parents are rude and inconsiderate (cocks) and some are not. Rudeness is annoying, but so are generalisations. And that's it really.

any women with a career, own money and no kids in dulwich!?
annaj replied to angela2711's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Angela, I'm less troubled by your sweeping generalisation and this dull repetition of the pointless parents versus non-parents debate, than I am by your obvious breach of fourm etiquette. Starting the same thread simultaneously in two different areas is extremely poor form. annaj - married, thirty-something, career, no children, likes a tidy forum. -
From Dirty Dancing (widely dismissed as a mindless chick flick, but in fact a beautiful coming of age film full of social and political subtext. And dancing) my favourite ever scene. *whispers* It's on fiver right now if anyone wants to catch that last dance.

Hhmmm. Confession time Keef. When I told you I'd never sung in public before it wasn't entirely true. At school I played Squealer in the musical of Animal Farm! :-$
-
Weirdly I can only find mine in spanish... Sentimental nonsense, but I just love it. Makes me cry every time.
-
Oh Keef, thank you! I love that. I used to sing along to that all the time with my little sister (I was Elaine she was Barbara) and it's still a favourite for long car journeys. So much so, that at a very drunken engagement party we discovered that our husbands had been forced to sing the opposite parts so many times, they could actually do the whole thing together! Bignumber5 makes a lovely Barbara ;-)
-
Happy Birthday Sean MacGabhann! Edited because I got confused and thought I'd missed it, then realised it was Wednesday!
-
What Keef said! Come on Anna, you can't expect anyone else to confess unless you do....
-
I have a huge crush on bignumber5 ;-)
-
*whispers* I know this bucks the gender trend a bit, but I had a thing for the dark haired one in the Ghostbusters cartoon. :-$

You know you're an East Dulwichite when.... (Lounged)
annaj replied to Lizziedjango's topic in The Lounge
Indeed. I'd love to know what assumptions you were making about me Harsh-but-Fair. -

annaj replied to Lizziedjango's topic in The Lounge
Harsh and unfair. It's hard to know where to start with the generalisations and assumptions implied by your last two posts, but I think I'll start with some facts. It might seem like stating the obvious, but not all older mothers have IVF, some women are naturally fertile into their 40s and not all women who have IVF are older. Not infertility is down to female factors and not all female infertility is down to age; age is only one factor. Of couples who are infertile, 35-40% will be due to female factors, 35-40% due to male factors and the rest either have problems on both sides or unexplained infertility. Finally, the idea that middle-class, career women, who want to have it all, are selfishly putting of having children knowing that they can always fall back on IVF, is total nonsense. People decide to have children or not have children for all kinds of reasons. Perhaps the older mothers you've encountered didn't meet the man they wanted to have children with until they were older, perhaps the baby was a late "surprise" after the other children had grown up or from a second relationship, perhaps their partner wasn't ready to have children any earlier. You just don't know, you're assuming, which is my whole point. -
We're quite near you Ant, I'll keep an eye out for her. Try not to worry too soon, she'll probably come back all by herself.
-
Exactly. My post was not intended to belittle anyone's suffering or defend antisocial behaviour, only to point out that I found the some of the attitudes on this thread deeply unpleasant.
-
Well said Keef. Sweetgirl, I haven't looked back through all your old posts, but from memory I can't remember you posting anything positive about anything. That and the fact that, as Asset points out, you seem to really enjoy the misfortune of others, is I think what Keef is referring to rather than out and out rule breaking.
-
*sigh* Fine. I tried to give an intelligent, reasoned, informative repsonse to a question and got only jiggle references for my trouble. I'm leaving. *turns (carefully to avoid distracting excess jiggle) and flounces off*

Because D used to be the biggest size you could get. Over the last 25 years boobs (I think that's an ok word) have got a lot bigger. Nobody knowns why exactly, it thought to be possibly linked to the general trend towards obesity or changes in diet to include more natural (eg from soya) and artificial (though meat) oestrogens or increased use of the oral contraceptive pill. Anyway, when bra manufacturers realised they needed to make a size bigger that D they called it DD, but pretty soon that wasn't big enough either so they went on up the alphabet. Another theory is that boobs aren't actually getting that much bigger, but that womens' expectations are higher and they are no longer prepared to settle for a poorly fitting bra. The traditional sizing system works on two measurements, below the bust and around, but this doesn't take indivdual shape into account at all. Many women, some surveys suggest most, are wearing bras that are too big around the back and too small in the cup. As women learn more about their bodies, the demand for a greater range of sizes increases. Oh and Keef is correct, there is a AA and it's smaller that A. Well, you did ask.

Ted Max, that one made me cry. No, really. Not sure if I want you to stop or carry on.

Next EDF drinks - Magnolia Fri 03 October - All Welcome
annaj replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in The Lounge
It was certainly an exclusive group last night, quite a contrast to recent busy forum drink-ups. Lovely to see everyone though and, as I may have said once or twice last night, I really like the new Mag. I think Rose has done a great job, it's a comfortable, welcoming space and could easily be my favourite bar in the area (particularly when the heating is sorted. It was a little chilly!). Rose herself was there last night and made us really welcome - Cheers Rose! -

Umm, ok, I don't want to get into a forum fight or anything, but as one of the people who mentioned the prosecco, I can't help taking this a little personally. djfitz, reading that it seemed to me the only person being smug was you. Don't you think your post was a little judgement and presumptuous? Apart from knowing that I don't like prosecco or Adventure bar, what do you really know about me? Are you really in a position to judge my attitude to poverty, the children of neighbouring, more deprived, boroughs or my charitable giving? I'm no saint and I'm not saying I don't over indulge occasionally, but that sort of sweeping moral judgement just because I expressed an opinion on a cheap, sweet, prosecco cocktail, seems unfair to me.
