  1. I go to Columbia Market when it's time to re-plant the window boxes and the pots - not gonna get all that on the bus.
  2. It's a great market - parking is an absolute nightmare though and this is one of the few places in London that you really do need to drive to.

    Great Gigs

Great voice; sounds like a bit of Ian Curtis with a bit of Leonard Cohen in the mix.

Any ideas people? You are in luck. The Young Vic is staging "The Good Soul of Szechuan" in May. http://www.youngvic.org/whats-on I do not know this version of the play, the version I saw was at the National Theatre some years ago, put on as "THE GOOD PERSON OF SICHUAN" with Fiona Shaw and Bill Patterson. It was excellent. Translations of Brecht can differ wildly but I would imagine that Jane Horrocks is playing the "Good Person" in the Young Vic's version. I am really quite partial to a bit of Brecht because the complete lack of any sub-text whatsoever leaves me free to think of other things. The best I ever saw was Diana Rigg as Mother Courage - magnificent. If you go to this page at the Young Vic http://www.youngvic.org/whats-on?action=details&id=1793 - you will find a lot of information about the play and this production of it. Before you book, phone the box office and check if they are doing any special Brecht events in support of the play - they often do that at the Young Vic - so you can coincide your visit with whatever event they are putting on. Lastly, the Young Vic is a few minutes' walk from the 176 bus stop - so you can't go wrong.

Any talk of ID cards always gets me thinking of Auden's Unknown Citizen He was found by the Bureau of Statistics to be One against whom there was no official complaint, And all the reports on his conduct agree That, in the modern sense of an old-fashioned word, he was a saint, For in everything he did he served the Greater Community. Except for the War till the day he retired He worked in a factory and never got fired, But satisfied his employers, Fudge Motors Inc. Yet he wasn't a scab or odd in his views, For his Union reports that he paid his dues, (Our report on his Union shows it was sound) And our Social Psychology workers found That he was popular with his mates and liked a drink. The Press are convinced that he bought a paper every day And that his reactions to advertisements were normal in every way. Policies taken out in his name prove that he was fully insured, And his Health-card shows he was once in a hospital but left it cured. Both Producers Research and High-Grade Living declare He was fully sensible to the advantages of the Instalment Plan And had everything necessary to the Modern Man, A phonograph, a radio, a car and a frigidaire. Our researchers into Public Opinion are content That he held the proper opinions for the time of year; When there was peace, he was for peace: when there was war, he went. He was married and added five children to the population, Which our Eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation. And our teachers report that he never interfered with their education. Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd: Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard.

  13. Today is Greek Easter Sunday - my best friend is a Greek optimist and is having a barbecue. She's lived here long enough to know better but at the first sign of a chink of blue sky she gets the barbecue out. Bless. I love that about her.
  14. http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php This is a brilliant website that I use all of the time. I'm posting it here because I've just been reading a thread where someone complained that they were on hold for ages on a premium line phone number. Basically, if a company gives you an 0870 number to ring, just run the company through this website and it will give a you a geographical (cheaper) number to call. I've heard that a lot of the numbers provided are the numbers that companies don't want you to have - provided to the site by whistleblowers from those companies. It's by no means perfect but it definitely hits more than it misses.

  16. We've been here before - the forum is not a place to target identifiable neighbours in disputes. If you want to discuss this issue on the forum then you will have to do so without naming names - and you have clearly identified these people in your post - which is wrong.

  24. THEY ARE PARASITES I have never EVER managed to get a straight answer about how much of the money they keep and how much goes to the charity. Also, I seriously object to the way the male chuggers come on to the women and the female chuggers try and flirt with the guys. If you don't believe this happens just stand and watch for a while - it's nauseating. They are a nuscience. If you want to sign up with any of the charities then just google that charity and sign up direct. That way the parasites won't get anything.
