Actually, after a little googling to check that name, it seems it was originally called duck tape when it was invented in WW2. After the war it became widely used to wrap air ducts and the name duly changed. So both are considered correct.

I did have a call once from one bunch of ambulance chasers, though this was a real person rather than a machine. The spiel started with "We believe someone in your household has had an accident in the past two years..." to which I shrieked down the phone "AN ACCIDENT?? WHO?? WHAT HAPPENED?? IS IT MY WIFE?? IS SHE ALRIGHT?? OH GOD HAS SOMEONE CALLED AN AMBULANCE?? TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED!!!" She mumbled some sort of apology and hung up.

Amnesty's advertising. I think the worst example was "come and sign our petition protesting against the kidnapping of the Nigerian schoolgirls". It's entirely pointless (who did they send it to?) and just their way of increasing their 'people to hassle for money' database. Though I suppose 'irrational rage' is overstating it. More a grumpy 'hurumph'.

People who say 0207/0208 annoy the hell out of me, too. Worse are the PEOPLE WHO WRITE IT!!! It is just wrong. Besides, there are 020 3xxxxxxx numbers out now.

My normal approach... 1) Go to trivago.co.uk. 2) I enter my price range and distance from the centre acceptable (it's a slider. so you can experiment). 3) Select a star range (I use 3 and 4) and rating (I use 4 and 5). You can select more than one! 4) See what comes up, select a shortlist of about 5 or 6 and then have a look on Trip Advisor for comments to find a winner.

Football headlines in the off season. Yesterday, with the commonwealth games in full swing and the third test firmly in England's hands, what was the top back page story in the Metro? Footballer doesn't move clubs. What a non-story. But it's football, innit? And the Metro is far from the only offender.

Interesting question: at 20mph, would you rather be hit by a car or bicycle? Cars are bigger and have more momentum, but are built with smoother lines and more safety features and you are (if you are an adult) more likely to be swept up onto the bonnet. Bikes are lighter, but have more pointy bits and built with no third-party safety features. Which is worse?
