  2. I'm sorry, but discussing Diana's 'greatness' on a thread about Mandela is just wrong, wrong, wrong. You may as well throw Elton John into the mix on that basis.
  3. I opened a radical bookshop once. It sold vegetables.
  4. david_carnell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Ghandi > Mother Teresa > Aneurin Bevan Mother Theresa's politics were a bit iffy, to say the least. Bevan is pretty much unknown outside the UK. I'd say only Mandela, Ghandi and maybe Einstein are true stratospheric greats in the last 100 years. Though Einstein was not a leader as such.
  5. Am loving the use of 'Fox News', Maxxi.
  6. Russ Meyer. Awesome. And huge. Huge and awesome. There was a man who knew a fox when he saw one.
  7. Well I did wonder why the ladies weren't impressed when I shoved a book down my trousers. It was the fifth Harry Potter, too.

Hang on, you were the one that derailed it from the OPs original point in the first place! You know - the bit where you sort-of-but-not-quite called her a racist...

  10. Actually, I'm kind glad police somewhere in the country want to do something about the overpriced, overbearing tea towel pedlars.

There are lots of these going around, tax returns, parcel delivery, paypal etc. They are trying to get you to open the attachment, which WILL do very bad things to your computer. Never open an attachment unless you know exactly what it is and who it came from - and expected it to be sent to you. Few organisations send attachments these days.
  12. Your job, should you receive one of these calls, is to keep them on the line for as long as possible and waste their time. Of course, it goes without saying, do not touch you computer during the call. Just make up daft stuff.
  13. Books are only slightly ahead of gift vouchers as far as imaginative presents go. If someone gives you a gift voucher for a bookshop you know you there was pretty much zero thought spent on you.

Yes Sue, I read your post, especially the bit where you said "I can't think such statements can be doing your "French fashion consultant" business (or whatever it is) any favours, except amongst the more right wing readers of the forum". What did you mean by that exactly? And "you imagine that all asylum seekers must be a different race to you"? Well, kind of, as by definition they are not British. Ergo, they are a different nationality and therefore covered by the Race Relations Act, which is why saying nasty things about the French or the Irish is, indeed, racist.

You'd hope that was the case, but it not always is. I once received a call saying they were from my bank and they needed to go through some security to prove it was indeed me they were talking to. I replied that since they had rung me, could they prove they were actually from my bank - say a full account number or other detail. They said the DPA didn't allow them to do that. I said they needed to prove their identity before I would respond to their security requests. At this point the caller got annoyed, told me to ring my bank (!) and put the phone down. I thought, "Ha! Take that, scammer." Except it turns out that the call really was from the bank. It was a few years ago - I rather hope they've improved their practices since then.
  17. Yes, you have to degister the Kindle and your friend can then register it.

Where did I say the OP was racist? Sue is, of course, correct. She definitely did not say the OP was racist. She might have suggested, hinted, indicated, offered, prompted, propounded, connoted and implied it. But Sue definitely did not say it. (This post has be brought to you by thesaurus.com)

If someone posts a anecdote on a public website that obviously leads to such a question, then they should not be too surprised if it is asked. So you can pop down off your high horse now, GG.

Actually, Herne Hill Rose, as El Pibe pointed out, that comment was for you to 'consider and assess'. You seemed happy to describe the person as a 'drunken man' but not as a 'drunk asylum seeker'. Why is one description acceptable to you and one not? And who is the arbiter in these politically correct rules of person description? (An often badly and over used term, but one aptly describes this situation.)

But is it not offensive then to point out it was a man? Or even drunk? If the OP's description was accurate, then why should she pare it down to the point where it meets the level of sexism/racism/whatever generalisation that corresponds to your own biases?
  24. I don;t think she lived in it for nothing - she did pay rent to the housing association.
  25. Two of the most commercially viable acts in the singoff. What does the public know? Who the hell is going to buy anything from Nicolas? Or Sam? Rough Copy might fill the space left by JLS, but they just aren't as polished as they were at the same stage. I can see Simon C signing up Tamera first thing Monday morning. 16 years old, has the right look and an amazing voice.
