I would say, given what PR wants to use it for, that she should spend her budget on as much RAM (memory) and disk as she can. The difference between the processing power lower and upper end of the currently available chips is not a lot, especially given Moore's Law, but the you pay quite a premium for the cutting edge products. So I'd say grab as much RAM and disk as you can, and then buy the best chip you can afford with whatever is left in your budget.

I didn't think they could actually kick it that far...!

I'm not sure who is going to be more upset out of H and MM, Katie. :)) We need a 'rolls on floor laughing' smiley, for the times when a big grin won't do.

Notebook and laptop are pretty interchangeable terms. Netbooks are lame. Most laptops now are built down to a price, so as long as you stick to a 'name', you should be OK. Unless that name is 'Packard Bell', in which case put it down and move slowly away. PB is PC World's own brand. Dell do pink laptops! A current decent spec for a laptop is 3 or 4 GB RAM and about 300GB hard disk. Unless you are going to use the laptop for something processor-heavy like gaming or video editing, the CPU doesn't really matter a lot, but a dual-core is pretty standard now. I think most laptops now come with a wireless LAN adapter but check (look for some or all of IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n in the specs). That will connect you to your ISP's router. Other things you might want: bluetooth (for skype headsets and hooking your mobile phone up), Firewire connection (for connecting video cameras), S-video TV-out (for connecting to your TV and watching iPlayer). Head to dabs.com or dell.co.uk. Dabs have HP and Toshiba (both reliable) and Dell has, um... Dell. Happy hunting. Edited: to put the '4' in '3 or 4'

Occasional Saturdays you hear some noise. But given they have gates of a few hundred, it's really not much. And it's more than offset by having a rather handy gym on your doorstep.

I know you get banned about once a fortnight at the moment, TT3, but I do think this forum would be the poorer without your poorly informed playground insults. :)) I'm just not sure the Drawing Room is the right section for you.

1) Maybe not poor maths - but dishonest maths, then. Implying that there are a bunch of retired civil servants trying to get by on on a ?4K civil service pension (and less, since it is an average) is just dishonest. 2) Sorry, but calling it the "coalitions own myth busting website" is an absolute lie. Your 'explanation' confirms that. You've taken two vaguely connected figures and extrapolated to the entire complexity of the pensions system. And you wonder why everyone on here finds your 'arguments' trivial? And you didn't answer my 'first thought' question in my other post, either. Unsurprisingly.

What do you mean 'might as well'. Blair and Brown opened up banking regulations more than Maggie ever dared. It did, however, mean that London overtook NY as the financial centre of the world. On the other hand it did precipitate a world recession. Though you could argue that, as someone, somewhere would have done the same, the recession would have happened anyway. At least we got the cream while it lasted. And don't forget, Ed M is no socialist either. Mainly because socialism hasn't been a vote winner for years, and I doubt ever will be again. If you want to be in government, cling as closely as you can to the centre, whilst doing enough to keep your more left/right leaning members happy.

Aw, bugger. Taper/tarot confusion. Sorry. Memo to Loz... learn to read.

Or, if you like, what was the corresponding average number of year's service? > > Where ...the coalitions own myth busting website > !!!!!...check it out for even more interesting > facts. > > 2. > http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/about/facts/mythbus > ters/index.aspx# Now, now, TT3, that is just an out and out lie. That is the 'Civil Service' website, written by civil servants for civil servants. It is not the "coalitions own myth busting website". Try this one from the Motley Fool - it has less spin. And more information. And that is the problem at hand.

Hang on there... you were the one having a pop at the local school - Alleyns. Are you actually complaining about your own behaviour? You are hereby hoist with your own petard.

OK. First thought: What are these 'tax reliefs'? Do they include the relief at source (the fact my contributions are taken out of pre-tax income)? If so, what at the PS figures for this? Second thought: Brown abolished the relief on tax dividends paid into pension funds - i.e. the investment part of most pension funds. This was widely seen as a tax on pensions, as it is taxing the actual fund, rather than the contributing corporation. PS pension funds are not, to my knowledge, subject to the same loss. Final thought: I have no problem with the state - as an employer - contributing to PS pensions. It should, as do private sector employers. What I object to is the ration of the contribution and the guaranteeing of the final result. Otherwise, lets make it 'fair' and make the government pay for ALL pensions on a final salary basis. (Note that this is entirely unaffordable.)

Permits generally equal less parking space (as the bays are more stringently marked), so you'll probably have less chance of finding a parking spot. -

A few tube drivers go on strike and London grinds to a halt. A whole load of the public sector goes on strike and life pretty much continues as normal. Have they just proved we can cut more?
