  1. Eh?? Are you serious? Given that you're not too far away from me, I find this a little worrying. Perhaps it lives in St Francis park and chews on squirrels and foxes?
  2. My councillors? Would you like to declare your political interests in all this, SteadyEddy? Seems like you are having a pop at James Barber for working above and beyond the call of duty, which is the sort of petty political posturing we can do without. Having people like Mr Barber and Casey Jones of ED Station on these boards is fantastic.
  3. Sorry I'm late to this thread, people. Pass the popcorn, Horsebox, there's a good chap... ** parks his backside on the nearest chair to watch the fun **
  4. Yep. According to the Beeb, for "driving without due care and attention and driving while using a mobile phone". Strangely, given the reports, "leaving the scene of an accident" doesn't seem to be on the list.
  5. Personally, I think that stations get a bit announcement-heavy and I turn off. Do we really need the 'don't leave your bags unattended' message every five minutes? Especially with the grave, but over the top, "THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT" lead in. I think a better solution would be a set of armed, plain clothed 'enforcement officers', who travel the lines and kneecap offenders. Offenders will only ever do it twice.
  6. ...and with a CPZ the equation will probably drop to 100 cars into 50 spaces as the total number of spaces tends to drop because they put lots more yellow lines in.
  7. Moos - see if you can find a friend with a motorbike. Ask him/her to park it there. Or club together with your neighbours and buy an old a broken down one!
  8. Hamlets Health Club, in the football ground near Sainsburys is, AFAIK, the cheapest. Functional, but not flashy. www.hamletshealthclub.com
  9. We could do with a couple more estate agents, a few more bookies and some more uninspiring curry houses.
  10. I used to live near Bayswater a number of years ago. If you walked around after 11-ish you would get loads of girls in the area calling out 'want to do some business, luv'. I used to just say, 'No thanks' and go on my way. I never ever thought to say F off.

  12. Sean, Don't forget the mighty fine Cheese Block!
  13. Whatever you do, do not attempt to identify him by using your camera phone or similar. You may find yourself in more trouble than him. (Contining off topic: Radcliff's stop had nothing to do with urine.)
  14. I assume, Barry, that the standard Christmas/New Year London transport rip off will still apply?? i.e. A Saturday service is run, but normal weekday peak fares apply?? I know you're just the messenger, but it annoys me every year!!
  15. Hmmm. Maybe, maybe not. They've shown that there is, arguably, a problem. They've proposed speed humps as a solution. I don't believe they've shown that speed humps are necessarily the correct solution. Melbourne Grove a classic case in point. We have a problem - something must be done - this is something - it must be done. Sadly, that's the way of the world these days...
  16. Yay! We're famous!
  17. Oooh, 'eck.
  18. ... because someone overtly nasty is better? (td)
  19. I had a parcel delivered today! On a Sunday!! It was only a day or so later than expected, too.
  20. Putting humps on that part of Melbourne Grove is a stupid, stupid idea. Most of the issues on MG are because there are only single yellow lines on the 'dogleg' part of the road, which makes it a blind corner and therefore extremely dangerous. There is little speeding on MG because mostly it is hard to get above 15MPH at the best of times. Speed humps are just throwing the current all-purpose solution at problem it won't solve.
  21. Tactic No 1 is really, REALLY effective in the mornings if a group of about 6 of you all congregate near the driver, who then will drive off without opening the doors leaving loads of people at the bus stop, even though there is room for at least ten more people. This may be spoilt by an annoyed looking bloke bashing on the window yelling "MOVE DOWN THE BLOODY BUS". Ignore him. (Not that I need to tell you to ignore him. You do anyway)
  22. It would be, if it did. Are you really saying that 90000 speeders will drop magically to zero? I'm guessing that the really dangerous ones won't slow down by much, but the ones a couple of MPH over will. So, the stats will look good (average speeds will drop, total number of drivers 'speeding' drops), but the road is actually no less dangerous. Actually, possibly more dangerous if the figures of extra car exhaust pollution at speed humps is to be included.
  23. Looking at the data James Barber provided on the other thread, I'd really question whether installing the speed humps is either cost effective or a good idea. The average speed and 85th percentiles were mostly under or close to the limit. What is the cost of these humps and is it worth bringing the average speed and 85th percentiles down probably 1 mph or thereabouts? There are people who speed and these measures won't change their habits. Only a cop with a speed gun can do that. Sometimes you get the felling that councils do this stuff to look like they are doing something useful, when really there is either a) no problem or b) this isn't the solution. And we are paying for it.
  24. Good lord, Brendan - what sort of history books were you taught with? Don't recall that happening much myself. Moses's flight from Egypt with a pram or two? Krystallnacht with bugaboos?
  25. I didn't find this article especially humorous - in fact, I never got the feeling that the author was attempting humour. However, inside the faux rage, there was more than a degree of truth and a truth that some on here seem to find a little uncomfortable. So, a successful article.
