    Cassis query!

When I bottled up my sloe gin this year I tried to strain it through a muslin, as per the instructions, but Mr Patel up the road was really rather uncooperative, to say the least.
  5. I quite like Khan. Quietly pragmatic and actually gets stuff done with minimal ideological nonsense. If only he could lead the Labour party.

That's what happens when I don't Google something, just in case my memory is faulty. Which it often is.

Because as well as lowering the freezing point, it also lowers the boiling point. Of course, your veggies will then take slightly longer to cook as the water temp of the boiling water is slightly lower.
  10. bobbsy - my mistake, you are correct.
  11. I think the basic requirement for a sport to be in the Olympics is that an Olympic gold medal should be the pinnacle of the sport. On that basis, tennis, golf, football should not be Olympic sports. And probably basketball, too.

So at some stage in the future, the BOE will destroy the money it created, usually by selling the bonds it originally purchased with the created money. > I thought cost is in inflation etc. It is inflationary and must be carefully used.

My first thought was that if I gave him any money, he'd probably spend it on booze. Then I considered the fact that, if I kept it, I would probably spend that quid on alcohol too. On the logic that he probably needed a drink more than I did, he got the quid.

  18. But beware, under the new rules being phased in over the next few years, if you, as the landlord, is a 40% (or 45%) tax payer, then you would effectively only be able to claim a proportion of those costs. And don't forget that the Agents will charge VAT on top of those fees, so an 8% fee effectively becomes 9.6%. Personally, I reckon if you live close enough to manage it on your own, then do so. But it sounds like you need to do some reading up on your legal obligations (e.g. gas certificates, deposit protection, smoke and CO2 alarms, etc, etc).
  19. Who thought up some of the more stupid cycling events? Some are excellent (elimination race, points race) but some of the rest are just silly. Riding really slowly before sprinting as fast as possible? Following a motorbike around for six laps?. What next - participants must cycle backwards whilst juggling and mentally solving mathematical problems? Three laps of reading the third Harry Potter book whilst simultaneously singing "Bohemian Rhapsody", before a final sprint?

That's a bit easier to explain. The salt lowers the freezing point of water. So, instead of the ice/water mix being about 0c, it can drop to about -10 (or even further with the right mix of salt and water). And even though that makes it a similar temp as a freezer, water transmits heat more easily, so it should cool the drink faster. It's the same reason putting salt on roads stops them freezing.

Well, yes foxy - the change of state as the water evaporates needs energy, so it uses surrounding heat. That's not really going to happen in a freezer, though. The change of state from water to ice, as far as I can remember, doesn't use that energy. I suspect this effect, if it occurs, is to do with water being a better transferrer of the heat in the bottle with the chill of the air in the freezer,

I thought it did, so I went a'googling. I found two people that did the experiment with temp probes and they found opposite results. I am now no wiser on the subject.

Nicole, You really need to seek advice on this. From what you have said, not only should it not be deemed you fault (and that may have more financial repercussions for you, as the LL could try and make you pay for all the damage), but you should be able to claim for damage to your personal belongings loss against whoever's fault it was. Really - talk to CAB or Shelter or some other organisation that can help you.

I'd suggest you contact CAB or similar. As it stands, the LL can withhold your deposit at the very least. Try this list... http://www.landlordlawblog.co.uk/2014/08/06/if-you-want-free-tenant-legal-advice-here-are-15-places-you-can-get-help/
