  1. I think what TM is scared of is the timing issue. The plan was to trigger Article 50 in March, and so leave in March 2019. Now she has to go through parliament (that means the HoL as well) then that timetable may be delayed. But, we have to have a GE in May 2020, so any stalling will take it straight into the run up to that. She almost certainly won't want the clash, as the country will be bitterly divided at that time. So that would mean delay triggering A50 until after the GE. But that sort of delay will be unacceptable to the Brexiteers. So, her only choice then would be to call a snap election. Which, with any luck, Brexit will be the main issue and cause fractures in both the Tories and Labour. How the Lib Dems do in the upcoming by-elections may be telling. Any party going in to a GE with a remain policy and winning would nullify the referendum. So, the judges have well and truly taken a dump in TM's in-tray. But the decision seems pretty sound, so I suspect the appeal is just playing for time whilst Plan B is hastily formed.

The rot was *evident*? The UK's reign as a world power declined and then ceased in the decade or so following WW2. By 1973 it was on its knees. > The best oportunity in 40 years to make this country a World leader again. The UK (well, England) was a power because it has an empire. It doesn't any more. It will never again compete with Russia, China and the US as a world leader, no matter how much you dream. But, as part of the EU, it at least had a chance of being part of something that might have developed into being a world leader. We are now destined for a future of mid-table mediocrity. If we're lucky. With a good fortune and (ha!) strong leadership we might come out of this relatively unscathed, but we also may just plunge the country into a very long and deep malaise, for no real benefit. But, whatever happens, we won't be lunching at the top table ever again.

I would complain again to the police. Unless you could be considered a physical threat (and therefore self defence could be offered) no one is allowed to assault you, whatever provocation is considered. Especially as bodily harm has resulted.
  7. Just put the Birdie Song on repeat for four hours straight. That would be pretty horrific.

  9. I think we're in a bit of a funny period at the moment, all caused by the falling pound. I'm working in retail and, due to the pound's value, we are getting a lot of enquiries from abroad as our prices are currently very attractive internationally. We know that this is a temporary period as we are selling stock bought pre-pound crash. Come the new year we are going to be hit with price rises due to rising import prices which we will pass on. I think manufacturing is in a similar zone. Export prices are currently good, but raw material prices will rise soon. New year is going to be... well... interesting.
  10. I rang up, and pressed the "If you are thinking of leaving us" option. Told the guy I wasn't happy with the price rise. He said my package was ?38.60 a month and he could offer me ?29 a month for six months, then ?32 for the next 11 months so long I took a new 12 month contract.
  11. Is it me, or has this case potentially opened a very big can of worms? I could fully understand that, had it been a real gay wedding cake requested (as I originally thought) then finding a case of discrimination would be obvious. But this was different. This was a request for a cake to bear a political message that the owners found offensive. But it was still seen as discrimination. What will we see next - a bakery owner by black people forced to create a cake with a white supremacist message? A Jewish bakery forced to bake a cake bearing a 'vote Corbyn' message? Not sure we've heard the last of this one.

  13. I think there was a great demonstration this week of what the UK faces... Canada spends 7 years negotiating a trade deal with the EU and it all looks like collapsing due to opposition from part of Belgium. Just shows what might be achieved in the two years Article 50 allows.

A looooooooooooooooooog way. Aldi and Lidl are German companies. *That* was the irony. But a nice piece of patronising stereotyping. By you.

  16. Kind of ironic that shoppers at Lidl and Aldi voted for Brexit.

Having said that, there's no way they can afford to leave the UK. Maybe if gas and oil prices bounce back.

  25. There are a number of online courses on the ALISON website (https://alison.com). They might not be as good as a classroom, but they are free so might be worth trying first.
