  1. It's only a day or so into the Olympics and I am getting very annoyed by the word 'medalled', as in 'He medalled at the world championships.'. 'Medal' is not a verb. Get your act together, Beeb.

And yet, as I pointed out before, the proportion of male victims of police killings is wildly disproportional (about 95% in the US) and yet nobody raises a peep.

But, that works both ways. If someone did say 'all cancers matter', I'm fairly sure they wouldn't be pressed to say that phrase is 'offensive' and apologise for saying it. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/jul/12/cult-singer-ian-astbury-apologises-for-all-lives-matter
  4. Jean Charles de Menezes??? Really, uncleglen?? I'm not sure you could find a more deserving example of an 'innocent victim'.
  5. Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I don't think I've ever seen "check your privilege" The Guardian went through a phase of using it few years ago. They have, thankfully, stopped doing it.
  6. The percentage of people shot by cops that are male is higher than the percentage who identify as black. So why isn't it 'Male Lives Matter'?

  8. Anyone using the pompous phrase "educate yourself".

I thought the point was that the grapes are pre-weighed in the packing factory? The staff at the till have just assumed you've not applied a five-fingered discount and topped the bag up from another.
  11. All you need to know about agents is contained in one piece of small print in just about every agreement. That is the bit that says that, even if the tenants fails to pay the rent, you still have to pay the percentage agreed for management. That's sums up the lack of confidence they have in their own service.
  12. I've used it and it does save you money. But, beware some of the cheaper, dodgy car hire firms in southern Europe which you often find in the car hire search engines. My experience was with Goldcar in Italy - they point blank refused to accept my insurance and refused to release the car to me unless I bought theirs. Mind you, if you google the company you will find many complaints about their shady practices. So, if you stick to the car hire household names, you will save money with the 3rd party insurance.

  14. Just about all bulk shipments are for wines under the ?6 mark, so you would essentially be banning imports of all wine above that level. That would, in turn, wipe out just about all non-supermarket wine retailers in the UK at a stroke. French winemakers supporting that price level would adapt in a very short time period. I just hope that the real trade negotiators don't succumb to such moronic, idiotic, short-sighted, half-witted ideas.
  15. I was just confirming my recollection of the victorian urinal at the Princess Louise pub in Holborn, when Google served up this site. http://www.urinal.net/ I think that's malumbu's Friday night plans ruined...

  17. Get a cross cut one - I have the one that just carves everything into strips and I've never quite convinced it is that effective, security-wise. Plus I am always having to empty the damn thing.

Because we wanted an unusual size, we went with these guys. http://www.nabru.co.uk It was like putting together a big 3d jigsaw puzzle - no screws, no nails, no glue. Had it for two years now and it seems to be wearing well.
  19. Anyone else seen Owen Smith list of policies? He looks like he's trying really, really hard to look left-wing. Some of the things are nuts ('focus on equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity', 'wealth tax') and the rest is old-skool tax and spend. He's trying to look a bit like Corbyn, but without the grass-roots popularity.

Cardelia Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Even if he did have a "wine qualification" I'm pretty sure that the WSET syllabus doesn't cover > the economic implications of Brexit or the finer details of WTO import/export tariffs Coincidentally, I have two WSET qualifications. Perhaps in GG's book that makes me a 'wine expert' and GG will finally believe me!
  21. Green Goose Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Here is the take from another wine expert. He says the WTO rate is 32%. Yes, I've been saying all along that the default WTO rate is 32%. I've also being saying all along you are confusing that with the EU tariff. And you've just done it again. Face it GG, your grand plan for forcing France to submit at the negotiating table is about as plausible as the ?350m a week claim.
  22. Apologies DaveR - you're right. My sentence earlier should have read: Current EU tariffs on imported wine (of less than 15% ABV) are between 10 eurocents and 15 eurocents per litre (depending on strength and whether it is bottled or bulk).

We can make a tariff rate at whatever %age we want on > selected items like French wines -just like the EU do at 32% on non-EU wine imports. Which part of 'you are utterly wrong' were you having trouble with?? The EU does NOT charge 32% on non-EU wine imports. > We can make a tariff rate at whatever %age we want on selected items like French wines You are also having sever difficulty with the concept of WTO rules as well. Even if you don't use the default WTO tariff rates, you are still bound by WTO rules. Everybody is. Look up the 'Most Favoured Nation' principle. What you are proposing is impossible and illegal. And if you are telling us we can negotiate FTAs with "USA, Japan, Canada, Korea, Australia, China etc etc" in two years you are just carrying on with the sort of Brexit lies that got us into this mess in the first place.
  24. Green Goose Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The key item is the 32% tariff currently imposed > by the EU on wines from elsewhere in the world. Well, if that is your 'key item' you can forget about it, because you are utterly wrong. You are confusing current EU tariffs with the standard WTO tariff. Or, in other words, if they fall back to the standard WTO rates, that is what the UK will charge come Brexit for ALL imports of wine. Gee, thanks, Brexiteers. As if collapsing the pound didn't put prices for wine up enough already. Current EU tariffs on imported wine (of less than 15% ABV) are between 10% and 15% (depending on strength and whether it is bottled or bulk). Chilean wine has no tariffs applied, as they have an FTA with the EU. And also, to completely ruin your argument, WTO rules would prevent the UK from favouring one country over an other except in the context of free trade agreements. So unless an FTA is in place, slapping 32% on French wine and 0% on Australian wine would be in contravention of WTO rules.
  25. > Dr Fox can?t bring any FTAs into force until we leave the EU, but he can tee them up for the day after. That's wildly optimistic. Most trade agreements take many years to negotiate and Fox doesn't actually have any trade negotiators employed as yet. He has zero chance of putting a few together within 24-30 months. And, the other side of the argument, why the EU has to cause Britain as much economic pain as possible. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jul/24/eu-britain-must-suffer-for-brexit "The first argument for hurting the UK is by now well rehearsed: prevent another reckless exit on the basis of lies. Europhobe parties across Europe are anxious to repeat the feat of their British counterparts: using distortions, half-truths, racism and delusional fantasies to cheat their way to victory."
