I don't like using my phone right next to my head, for that reason. I always have it on the speaker when I'm at home. Anecdotal evidence, but there was some television reporter recently who (apparently, I never saw it) always had two mobiles held one to each ear, and she died quite young of, I think, a brain tumour. When mobiles were quite a new thing, I had to use mine all day once for a load of calls because my landline was out of order, and towards the evening when I was using it I got a piercing pain through the ear with the mobile on, and a pain in my head on that side which lasted for (if memory serves) several days. My GP at the time said there was no way the mobile could have caused it, but I never normally get earache or headaches, I don't believe it wasn't connected, and I'm not risking it again .....
  2. The Co-op has a box on the till at the end nearest the window for recycling batteries.
  3. Hmmm. When I was a student, to run a programme you had to punch it all onto a stack of cards, then the data had to be on a stack of cards too. And if you muddled the order of the cards, you were in trouble. Don't even think about dropping the box they were in. Then the computer was a huge huge thing which had a room to itself and had a team of people to run it. To run a statistical test, you took the box of cards in and came back a day or so later. To be given sheets and sheets of paper with "error, error, error" on them. Then you had to take the box of cards away, go through them all, and try to find out which one/s had the error on. Then you'd punch out those cards again, hopefully correctly, and take the box back to the computing lab and so on and so on. The last time I did it was for a statistical test called the Kolmogorov?Smirnov test. I imagine these days you just type in the data and get the result with one click. Happy days :)) ETA: Oh, and I tried learning Fortran once. That was a mistake. My brain hit a brick wall round about the fourth lesson and I never finished the course :))

They've probably got nothing else to do but put things on shelves and unclutter the aisles, because they've got no customers to serve. Not that I'm cynical at all .....

  6. Xoco. Another Indian restaurant?? From the name, I rashly assumed it would be Mexican .... but it has an Indian Grill. Can you have a Mexican restaurant with an Indian grill?? http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?30,1726606,1727220#msg-1727220 "Grand opening" today ...... ETA: Oh, they've posted the menu further up the other thread. It's Indian with a few additions I think.
  7. Well I owe Fox an apology, as I have been assured at John Lewis today that only the wide screens are available in laptops now. So, sorry Fox. So I've either got to grin and bear the lack of height, swap for a 17" screen (heavy and more expensive) or get a separate monitor (takes up room on the desk). Grinning and bearing it is my current thinking ......
  8. If you left a small blue backpack on a front upstairs seat of a 185 today, I handed it in to the driver around 11.15am (bus then heading towards Victoria)
  9. Do you have a pic?
  10. http://meatliquor.com/eastdulwich/menu/web/ Admittedly cheese does seem to feature heavily, hooray!

I'm wondering about those council offices mentioned on another thread as up for sale or about to be. Would it be a big enough space? Or the old Grove/Harvester though not very central, but space for a carpark.

Suggest you have a look. We are not talking about Macdonalds ..... And they don't do "extras" ..... ETA: See below!
  13. Whatever floats your boat :) Personally I have neither the time nor the inclination to mess about with Linux :) I just need a reliable laptop which does what I want to do on it speedily and without hassle ....
  14. Very interesting article, thanks, and yes it seems that is what has happened. I don't watch videos on my laptop so a wider screen is no advantage to me, and in fact a disadvantage for other things I do on it. Thanks for your help everyone. According to Robert Poste's Child above, laptop screens have not all changed, even if most have, so I am going to have yet another look at some in the flesh now that I'm aware of the issue. It's quite likely that I'll stick with this one, but I want to be sure before burning my boats. It's quite a major spend for me as I'm retired, hence the ten year use of the old one!

But it would be a nightmare if you could park on the road, surely?

I don't know but I'm talking about a laptop screen. I no longer use a freestanding monitor, they take up too much room on my desk! And the diagonals if both the old and the new ones are more or less identical, presumably because the extra on the horizontal side has compensated for the reduction on the vertical side.

The other thing was I had a bit of a shock to find the case was glossy black (just described online as black) and shows every fingermark. But that's less of an issue and I won't see the hideous gloss when it's in use, anyway.
  19. But my old one is not a square screen, it is not much different to the new one, just a noticeable (to me) half inch less high.

I will concede on > the iced lemon drizzle cake however, very nice. > I used to get ready meals from the Co-op at two for ?4 (ie ?2 each), for days when I couldn't be bothered to cook. Stuff like Shepherd's Pie. Last week I bought three ready meals from M&S for ?10 (ie ?3.33 each). The M&S meals were so extremely much nicer (not just slightly nicer) than the Co-op ones that despite the difference in price I shall be getting them from M&S in future, plus there's a much wider choice. Oh and one of them was the Empire Pie, mentioned above, which I agree was absolutely delicious. And so was the prawn and chorizo risotto. Neither of which, I think you will find, can be bought in either Iceland or Lidl. And their ?10 meal for two consisting of a main, side, dessert and bottle of wine is incredible value - not that I've tried it yet.

The trouble is, there seems to be some drawback to virtually every laptop I've looked at in my price range (under ?500). And many of them aren't even reviewed. But I do sometimes use powerpoint, so that could be a problem. And descriptions online give the diagonal but don't give the horizontal and vertical dimensions, or none that I've seen, they just give the dimensions of the laptop itself.
  22. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Well Sue.. Yes.. My old laptop screen is 13.2" x 8.2" The new one is 13.6" x 7.8" With respect, your posts are not addressing my question at all, and in fact are just muddying the waters.
  23. Fox, I am talking about the physical size of the screen. The dimensions. Whether it is turned on or off. Nothing to do with resolution. I have gone no further than the "Hi" screen and haven't even started setting the thing up, as if I do I can't return it.
  24. I have googled this without success. Have laptop screens become longer and thinner? My old and new laptops both have a 15.4" or thereabouts screen, but the new one's screen is longer horizontally but shorter vertically by about half an inch. My old one is ten years old (!!). Are all screens like this now? I'm worried I'm going to notice the lack of depth when eg I've got Firefox tabs at the top. Or is this somehow connected with the Windows 10 layout? I'm considering returning the new one (I bought it online and didn't see it in the flesh) but not if they're all like this now and I just have to get used to it ..... I didn't notice the different screen shape till I powered it up. I can't use it to see if I get used to it because obviously I can't then return it ....
