When my blue bin has been full, I have sometimes (eg if having a clearout) put recycling into a black bin bag, but clearly marked it "recycling, thank you" and left it with the blue bin on a recycling collection day. It has always been taken with no problem at all. I assume they empty the contents (usually paper) and chuck the bin bag away.

Dulwich Fox, I think you are confusing the issue. Obviously black bags, or any other colour plastic bags, or any non-degradable material for that matter, cannot be included with garden waste or other recycling. I am unaware of any edict which says you cannot put black bags into a green bin, which is for non-recyclable rubbish. Perhaps you are thinking of the days when people put their rubbish into a black bag and left it outside like that, without putting it into a bin at all? I believe it was that which was banned. Unless you can point to somewhere on the council website which says otherwise? ETA: On another point, my sister says that Merton Council have recently gone the other way to Southwark - they used to charge residents for collection of bulk waste, and now it is free.

I guess it's not their fault if a substitute instructor doesn't turn up, although they are expecting him/her to take the class? That doesn't excuse not responding to emails, though.

Some of the stuff I put in the green bin might occasionally be in a black bin bag, but most is not. Nobody has ever left a note telling me I was doing it wrong :)

If you don't have paper, I don't know if it would be allowed to use say a carrier bag but then decant the contents from the kitchen caddy into the brown bin outside? On second thoughts, probably too messy and smelly :(

I saw it too. Don't think it was sneaky. Not surprised they are stopping doing it - I was inundated with green bags left on my doorstep and (luckily) now have enough to last me for years :)) So they probably spent a lot more on the bags than they needed to. Plus some batches seemed to be quite crap and split as soon as you tried to put them on the bin :(

No, you're not missing something, however surely the driver should have noticed people in the road irrespective of whether there was a light in North Cross Road. It all sounds very traumatic, but I can't see that this is anybody's fault but the driver's, sorry. I do agree that the junction is an absolute nightmare at the moment for everybody using it. ETA: Suppose there had been lights in North Cross Road, suppose the lights were green but there were pedestrians on the crossing. Would the driver still have just almost run them over? Any driver should still be looking out for people in the road, surely? You don't need a red light. Also, cars could be coming out of North Cross Road who want to turn right.

That did occur to me as well, bob :))

Three people there around 11.30 loading bricks onto pallets. Sign says start date was 15 June and end date is 24 August, so they have six days to finish. And yes, it's Conway.

It's nearly a month since I started this thread, and the "work" (hollow laugh) had been going on for ages even at that point. It is beyond ridiculous now. OK, they had to wait for some materials (so one wonders why they didn't wait for them to come before they started. The muddling through approach to building - sadly I know it well :( ). They've now got the materials. Apparently. So why aren't they (expletive deleted) finishing this?

I can't believe what I am reading here. Sorry Fox but you have crossed a line. My grandchildren have just gone home after spending a week with me and my OH in ED. We had a great time out and about - planetarium, museums, feeding the ducks/pigeons in the park (not bread), healthy packed lunches every day etc etc and SHOCK HORROR we went to the pub and we DIDN'T EVEN EAT THERE (apart from crisps) WE JUST HAD DRINKS. And my OH and I had ALCOHOLIC DRINKS whilst sitting with the children. On the Palmerston roof garden which they greatly enjoyed. Do you actually know anything about children? Apart of course from your own childhood. Because if not, I suggest you stop making a fool of yourself on this thread and just STFU. You really don't do yourself any favours when you pontificate about things you appear to know absolutely nothing about.
