former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Sue replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi James, I emailed you this morning. Just wondering if you picked up the email? Apologies for posting on here, but you're normally very prompt at answering emails and this one is about something time-critical, thanks! -

I didn't find Lordship Lane "dire and depressing" at all! When was Northcross Road "wall to wall hairdressers"? If memory serves, there was a butcher, a cobbler, a newsagent, a Greek deli, a greengrocer (still there), amongst other things. To the best of my recollection there was a barber (still there) and one hairdresser. What were the other hairdressers? I agree the opening of the Blue Mountain was the start of the gentrification of ED :(

Slightly different, but there are also a few community gardens around which are open to the public, eg the Physic Garden at the front of Dulwich Hospital, which has a selection of herbs and other medicinal plants, with information about them. Good for bees, I imagine.

Not local, but Neal's Yard Apothecary have excellent electric oil diffusers. The reservoir lasts for some time (you put in water and a few drops of oil), and when it runs out the diffuser turns itself off. You can also have either changing colours, a static colour of your choice, or no colour at all. I've got the Zenbow one, but they do other shapes. http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/essential-oil-burners They are not cheap, but I've found them much much better than the tealight ones, which only have a small reservoir and when that runs down, the burner itself can crack so I was constantly replacing them. The electric ones are also safer as there are no naked flames. I don't know where the nearest branch is, but there's still the original one in Neal's Yard, Covent Garden, or if you have time they do them mail order. ETA: I absolutely love mine - I usually burn lavender oil, but at Christmas have Christmassy scents :)

That was how I read it, anyway.

We have been on a Dawn Chorus walk in Horniman Gardens this morning (starting at 5am!!!!) It was led by a very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and - importantly - audible guy from a company with the excellent name of Bird Brain :) Many birds are already nesting and some already have young. We heard - and in theory are now able to identify the songs of - blackbird, robin, blue tit, great tit, goldcrest, wren, nuthatch, song thrush, dunnock, wood pigeon, green woodpecker, one of the spotted woodpeckers but can't remember which, redwing (I think), magpie, parakeet, crow. Well obviously we already knew some of them ..... Well worth making the effort to drag ourselves out of bed and going out into the freezing cold dawn, though we did have to go back to bed after we'd had breakfast :) Apparently there are at least thirty types of bird at various times in the gardens, probably more. Didn't hear any house sparrows but came back to see several in my garden :)

We have just been on a Dawn Chorus Walk in the Horniman Gardens this very morning (had to get up at 4am as the walk started at 5am, but it was well worth it!) Was about to post on the nature thread about it when I saw this thread. Now off to post on that thread! ETA: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,246908,1290701,page=54#msg-1290701

It's > not helpful to dismiss many peoples' negative > experiences that they might want to vent about > just because a minority have positive experiences. > The surgery is an absolute disgrace that needs to > urgent change or be shut down. xxxxxx I'm genuinely sorry that you didn't find my post helpful :( but it wasn't intended to be helpful as such, it was trying to make a point. I am certainly not dismissing many peoples' negative experiences, including yours, and of course something should be done by the surgery to address them and to ensure they don't happen to others. I hope that you have made a formal complaint so that your experience is investigated and the required action taken? However, you have no evidence to talk about "the OVERWHELMING majority of people" and suggest that it is "the minority" who have positive experiences, unless you or somebody else has done a survey of everybody registered with DMC. Which incidentally might be useful! For any service or product, if you google online reviews, you are likely to find that the vast majority are negative, purely because most people are only driven to post about their experiences if they are annoyed about them because something was wrong. Why would anybody bother to write about a perfectly normal visit to their GP during which everything went smoothly? Or a product they had bought which they were perfectly happy with? Please don't get me wrong. I am not in the least suggesting that there are not serious problems at DMC which need to be addressed. However I could post on here a long list of serious medical f-ups which I and members of my family have experienced at various GPs and hospitals in the past, some of which were potentially life-threatening. I made no formal complaint on any occasion, therefore - hands up - probably those particular doctors are continuing with their same incompetence to others. My daughter has recently made a formal complaint to a hospital regarding a long saga of negligence last year, however it has taken her nearly a year to feel able - and well enough - to put it all in writing, not least because writing it down brings back very distressing memories. Sadly, I don't think this kind of thing is confined to DMC, and that is the reason I am staying with them. Out of the frying pan and all that .... I completely understand those who are leaving because of bad experiences, and if I had had a similar negative experience there I might well do the same, but that would be because of a very natural knee-jerk reaction rather than looking at DMC's actual statistics compared to other surgeries. Sorry for the length of this post :( -
*Bob* Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We need to get our top crime casebook operative on > this ASAP > > > Sue? xxxxxxx LOL, as it happens I have had more than a passing interest in this case. There's quite an interesting discussion on the Professional Pilots Rumour Forum: http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/535538-malaysian-airlines-mh370-contact-lost.html But I really don't want to get too engrossed in the detail of yet another mystery - life's too short :)) ETA: There's 316 pages on the pprune thread so far. Beats the Cherry Tree thread by a mile. But in seriousness, I feel very sorry for the relatives and friends who have no idea what happened to the people on board and are just left in a limbo where they can't even grieve properly.

Because at the moment, at peak times, it is a nightmare with so many bus stops and buses outside the Shopping Centre, and hard to see whether the bus you are waiting for is somewhere in the line of buses .... -
That's brilliant! Can you tell me how I now apply for a space in one? Can't get a bike till I know I have a space :) HOORAY!!!!

ruffers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There's a toaster in mine they're welcome to. > > It'll blow the fuse in their house. xxxxxx :)) ETA: I sort of feel that if people are so poor that they have to resort to this, what does it matter? If something is in a green bin, presumably its original owner doesn't want it any more. Going through blue bins looking for ID stuff is a different matter, but aren't most people these days aware of the need to shred things which could be used for fraud?

I use buses a lot, and getting rid of the 40 would be a real pain. It is the only bus which goes from ED to Borough/London Bridge. The 35 does not go up Lordship Lane, it goes from Camberwell Green to Brixton. And I don't see what the 176 has to do with it - it goes to Tottenham Court Road. Do you want us all to have to keep changing buses to get to our final destination? It's bad enough having to wait for one :)) -

I think it is but my sister-in-law's brother (not sure what relation to me that makes him) thinks it isn't. He claims it should be 13 loaves because in programming each step is separate and the second doesn't supersede the first or something. 12 loaves seems logical to me ..... Number 5 is my favourite, but I don't understand Number 12 :(
