  2. If it does Orange Wednesdays, even better. Got two comfy seats at the Ritzy last night for ?9.50 :) Saved enough for a pint of Guinness each, drank it while watching the movie :)

Don't you need a boarding pass? xxxxxx Hardly worth the hassle, was it, unless he worked at or very very near the airport?!
  8. Around 4.30pm today there were lots of police cars and an ambulance blocking Lordship Lane, and police redirecting traffic up North Cross Road (and presumably up another road the other side). Does anybody know what happened? There seemed to be at least two buses in the part of the road which was blocked off. Hope nobody was badly hurt :( Edited for typos

  10. Let's face it, if your car had been towed away, you wouldn't wake up your "new neighbour" who you haven't yet met at 1am to borrow money, would you? Well, hopefully not :)
  11. Many birds don't like feeding in open spaces - they feel more secure where there is cover for them. Is there somewhere you could hang the feeders near leafy parts of the garden, but where cats can't easily get? You could try some fat balls and/or peanuts (in a proper holder). Also, some birds are ground feeders. You could try putting out bits of apple or something as well? ETA: Also, birds do take a while to get to know that you have put out food. If the food in your holders has gone manky due to the rain and the time it's been out, you would need to replace it as the birds won't eat it.
  12. TJ Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Anyone know whether the cinema is going ahead, or > is it another urban myth aka Waitrose? xxxxxxx Well whether it goes ahead or not, it is hardly an urban myth, since our local councillor James Barber says that two cinema chains had been in discussion with the hall owners ..... Unless you think that James is in the business of peddling myths? Hardly a good re-election ploy, I would suggest ....

XXXXX Bloody hell, they had a Russell and Bromley in Rye Lane?! I guess Primark has taken over where C&A left off ......

Immediate neighbours and other nearby residents contesting plans.

Why be so nasty? Why shouldn't this money be used for art to make an area more interesting and pleasant to live in? And what's with the snidey "unemployed" reference? http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200256/cleaner_greener_safer

  21. jamescpr90 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Many years ago we had two excellent greengrocers > in Lordship Lane. xxxxxx Yes, and Sainsbury's opening put them out of business. As it did a couple of local butchers - including one in North Cross Road, if memory serves.
  22. James Riley, absolutely ace guitarist, was at The Pyrotechnics Arms in Nunhead last night, though doing mostly covers rather than what I've heard him do before - because it was a pub gig I guess. Apparently they have live music most Saturday nights (but I think not next Saturday). Never been in there before - they have a great choice of music on the juke box, too, including loads of blues!
  23. Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why not Sue? (Serious question, I am no expert on > these things). > > If allowed, then setting up basically a stall in > front of the cafe seems a good idea to me. xxxxxx I'm no expert either, but surely you'd need somewhere to store the fruit and veg. And where would they put the stall so that neither the stall nor its customers would get in the way of the chairs and tables where people were sitting outside the cafe, which I would have thought were a major part of the cafe's attraction, particularly in the Summer? Also a stall would not hold anything like the selection of produce which the shop currently has, so I can't see how it would bring in much income. Plus, many customers would probably prefer to do all their fruit and veg shopping in one place which has all that they need to buy, which they can probably do now at Pretty's but probably couldn't from a stall.

  25. worldwiser Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Did the council actually review the visual impact > they have when they instituted them? xxxxxxx When the hideous bright blue bins were introduced, I put exactly that question to the council manager in, er, question at one of the council meetings. In person. The answer was no, they hadn't. Despite the fact that there is a council department responsible for the appearance of streets, apparently bins are not included in said appearance, and there was no liaison whatsoever. I think that the people taking these decisions live in houses where the bins can be concealed, and just put out on collection days. Therefore they don't give a s**t for people who have nowhere to keep their bins except at the front of their house, with the consequent dreadful effect on the visual environment, or whatever the jargon is :( James Barber may remember the meeting - he was there too.
