  1. How awful. Which shop is that? I hope the shop owner recovers quickly - and will get compensation from whoever is responsible, surely?
  2. A short length of stick and some string may help to prop them up, though admittedly doesn't look very good. I think some hyacinths have sturdier stems than others so it may be worth trying a different variety next year. But if they were bought already in pots, they have probably been forced for early flowering, and I suspect that may make them weak. http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/houseplants_hyacinth1.shtml ETA: http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/bulbs/hyacinth/hyacinths-falling-over.htm

There are ways and ways of "challenging" people with "unpopular" views.(I assume by "unpopular" you mean differing to the views of some vocal forum posters). There is putting your case objectively based on facts you can provide. And then there is personal attack based on what sometimes comes across as just based on nothing very much at all. It also seems that a specific person putting forward a particular viewpoint may be "challenged" by several people, but when another person posts what would appear to be confirmation of that viewpoint, they aren't challenged, and in fact there may be a resounding silence. The SMBS thread was one thread in which that happened. Not sure what you mean by "can't handle it". Not sure how one is supposed to "handle" going round in circles with people who deliberately or not cannot seem to respond straightly or logically to points made, and again in some cases resort to personal attack. One of the McCann threads was one of those. And one of the most offensive and personal posts was by somebody who I now know to have been a mod.

I'm pretty sure I didn't "back down", as you said in a previous post above. Perish the thought! However, on other threads I have sometimes felt like I was being verbally attacked by the forum equivalent of a gang of playground bullies. (ETA: However, to the best of my knowledge I have never accused anybody of bullying me on the thread itself. I can imagine what would have been the reaction to that.) On another point above, I am pretty sure that DJKQ and Pokertime were/are the same person, not least because DJKQ used to run a poker evening, and possibly still does. Also the content and style of their posts were very similar (though I have to say I wouldn't have picked this up if somebody hadn't pointed it out to me). DJKQ also posted as Angetastic until she was outed, when she attempted (unsuccessfully) to delete all evidence of her Angetastic incarnation. Oh, and my first attempt at writing this post completely disappeared into the ether - the whole page just disappeared and never came back - spooky, eh?! :)) ETA: Louisa, you asked where was my response - I have been out most of the day and a large part of the evening, and frankly reading this thread was the last thing on my mind ....

Maybe you like to remember the number of young men and women who died (mainly) fighting for their country in a war (and other wars) they had no choice in? Maybe you like to occasionally remember to be grateful for the relative freedom we have in our lives, thanks to people like them who did not have much of a life, and the little they had was short? Just a thought. I found the Tower installation very moving, and I would have bought a poppy, but by the time I looked they were sold out.

That's also my impression of who is in the (or at least one) EDF Clique, though not sure about the 10 years :) I've never really been able to understand why a) someone would want to change their user name - confusing to all except other clique members or b) why they would want to continue to post on a local forum if they don't live here any more (particularly when they could keep in touch with old mates via Facebook etc), but hey ho, would be a dull old world if we were all the same etc etc etc .....
  7. My brother-in-law has one (and also helped "plant" them) and my sister had it framed for him for Christmas. It's in quite a large deep frame with quite a large border and glass on the front, if that makes sense.
  8. I will PM you too.
  9. Just seen this, and I know a few good local female possibilities, but a bit late now to contact people. But PM me if you get stuck.
  10. I bought a picture from an exhibition in The Ivy House a few weeks back :) It's probably a bit like buying clothes - if you go out looking for something, you don't find anything you like, but you see things at other times when you aren't expecting to?

So for ?9 you can either go from Greenwich to East Dulwich on Christmas Day - or Denmark Hill to East Dulwich not on Christmas Day :)) Jeremy, you make a fair point about running costs etc, but still ......

Hope your wife is able to go home soon, computedshorty, and that this time the op was completely successful.
  13. Thanks SJ, I'll see if I can get a better deal with Plusnet than what they've presently offered, then. Asking for a MAC code may focus their minds - I hope :)
  14. I'm thinking of changing to EE from Plusnet (though haven't done the haggling thing with Plusnet yet) but I'm worried about their poor reviews for customer service. Plusnet have always been good in this respect. Is anybody with EE for broadband and if so has your experience been good or bad? Got to change by 2 January :)

So why are King's using an apparently relatively expensive firm when they have a captive (and sick) customer base in A&E? Is the taxi firm paying King's for the privilege of being at the end of their "red phone"? Many people (including me) use taxis very rarely - so probably won't have numbers stored on their mobiles - and if they've spent the night in A&E probably won't want to look other options up, when the hospital just tells you to "use the red phone in reception" :(

Thanks Cloudberry. Yes, I thought it would be about a fiver. I should have asked, but it was on some kind of automatic system unless you wanted to speak to somebody. It took blooming ages to come, as well, and when I phoned to chase it I was told it was "just arriving and the driver will come in and find you" - which he didn't. Went out to find him sitting in the cab outside with some sort of stopclock showing seven minutes on it already and ticking up. When I mentioned this to him on questioning the fare, he said there was no clock (??) Don't think I would use Greyhound cabs again if there was a choice.

The last local cab I used was from The Ivy House in Nunhead to the North Cross Road area, with three people, a guitar and luggage, past midnight on a Friday night, and only cost about ?6. Different cab company. That's why I thought the one I posted about seemed expensive.
  20. I was charged ?9 for a Greyhound cab from King's A&E to around North Cross Road, around 7.30am on a weekday morning the day before Christmas Eve. There was virtually no traffic. That seems really excessive to me (which I did say at the time, and got a receipt (of a sort) after the driver faffed about and obviously hoped I would just give up). Is that really the going price for such a very short journey? The cab was called from the landline red phone in A&E.

  22. uncleglen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I remember the term 'the worried well' cropping up > years ago and that it was their fault that GPs > were over used. The trouble is, unless you are a qualified doctor, you have no idea whether your symptoms could be of something serious or not (unless it's obviously a cold or other trivial ailment). So - you might indeed turn out to be "worried well", but you could also put off seeing your GP for fear of being accused of worrying about nothing, and end up dead because by the time you eventually made an appointment it was too late. As happened to my then mother-in-law.

DMC in Crystal Palace Road, who are constantly getting slagged off on here, have an excellent pharmacist who can give advice and prescribe for simple conditions, as you suggest. ETA: I was recently referred to the Lister by my GP, and the doctor I saw there did not have access to my medical records. It was shortly before the new system came in, so that may have changed.
