  1. Thanks Foxy :)
  2. I don't consider Give and Take a charity shop. It's vastly more expensive than "normal" charity shops, and not all the money taken goes to charity.
  3. Oh great, that's good. Where is their recycling thing situated in the shop? At the front?

But that > clearly doesn't bother you. xxxxxx I think it's highly unlikely that existing charity shops' trade would suffer. I buy clothes, books and bric a brac at the existing charity shops, but often there is nothing there I want. If there were more charity shops, then I'd be more likely to buy more because there would be a wider selection. It's not as if it's another butcher opening when there are already x butchers in the area. It's completely different.
  5. edcam Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If there's a petition I'll sign it. So far as I know, there's: The Mind shop Two St Christopher hospice shops, one extremely small. and that's it. Apart from a tiny one up past the Plough.
  6. Oh thanks. Anyone know of one in the stretch between the old police station and Goose Green?
  7. Admin, please move if in wrong section, not sure where to put it. Is there anywhere in ED other than the big Sainsbury's which has a container for recycling batteries? I'm sure there was a thread on this before, but I can't find it. Thanks.
  8. Oh dear :( Bit like "Give and Take" down by the EDT, then? Except that more of the money actually goes to the charity? That's disappointing.
  9. The giveaway that it was all made up was surely the line "Her ultimate goal is to seduce a lecturer." Unless things have very drastically changed, I hardly think it could be that difficult :))
  10. I just thank God I've retired. Small dos with just your immediate team - fine. Usually you get on with them, else you would probably have changed jobs. Large dos with people you would rather gnaw your own limbs off than have to make small talk to - excruciating, especially if they're hard to get out of and especially if you end up sitting next to one of said people.
  11. Just found out yesterday whilst on a Turkish Delight mission that Persepolis (the Persian/Iranian food shop in Peckham just past Lidl) has got a new tiny cafe which sells delicious looking fresh salads.
  12. What everyone else said. I put down Stopgap in my living room floorboards last year, and it has made a noticeable difference. I too used brown, which looks better against my white floorboards as it just looks like the gaps. But you can get small tester packs - if you order one colour, they send you a bit of the other colour as well. The only problem I've found with it is that it sometimes tends to rise up and you have to push it back down, but it's not a huge issue. Agree with rugs - I put large rugs down in my living room in the Winter. An electric throw is brilliant. I can sit in my living room under mine with the radiator turned off, and still be really toasty. Agree, only heat the room you're in (obviously only if you're going to be in it for longish lengths of time). It's a bit of a pain remembering to turn the rads up and down when you move rooms, but hey think of the money you're saving. I have a wireless thing which controls the boiler, and I take that into the room I'm in as well. Afraid I wear many layers of clothing around the house in the winter. Wearing a woolly hat really makes a difference as your head loses a lot of heat. You just have to try and remember to remove it when answering the door - though I don't bother any more. Unless I'm wearing two, when I remove the top one to minimise the eccentric old woman appearance :)) A woolly scarf also helps. And thick socks. And woolly slippers. And thermal tights or leggings :)
  13. I couldn't go either. Hope somebody did and is able to report back!

It's the Crystal Palace Road one. Or has Chadwick Road been bad too?
  15. What's a Mary Portas type charity shop? Didn't know she pushed charity shops? If it will be as good as the big hospice shop, then I'm delighted. Source of most of my wordly goods, lately :)
  16. I was going to post the council person's details on here, but have had second thoughts as it's a public forum (although he didn't ask me to keep them confidential). He said "Please contact me directly if you have any issues with the developers at 68A Crawthew Grove in future". He is a "Development Control Officer" so I'm guessing he is probably not the person who made the decision not to prosecute, who would probably be a manager further up the chain. Somebody who wants a quiet life, I expect. If anybody wants to contact the Development Control Officer re Crawthew Grove, please PM me and I will pass on his details. I have an email address and phone numbers.

  19. Have received another email: "The developers were warned and informed that prosecution could be an option if this were to happen again. Southwark Council didn't have enough evidence this time, however we will continue to monitor the site. Please contact me directly if you have any issues with the developers at 68A Crawthew Grove in future." Didn't have enough evidence?? How much evidence do they need??? Prosecution "could" be an option if this were to happen again???? Not much incentive for developers to keep within the law, is there? :(
  20. davidh Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > it is a family row. don't know about you, but most > on here do not want to lose chris' very long > established shop. you seem not very bothered about > that. xxxxxx Eh? The family row has nothing to do with anybody else, and to conclude from what I said that I "seem not very bothered about that" (ie losing the shop) is just bizarre. I moved just round the corner from Pretty's over twenty years ago, and of course I would not like it to go. But what that has to do with what I said about the family's differences being nobody's business but their own is beyond me. ETA: In the very first post on this thread after the OPs, I specifically said that it would be a "sad loss " if it were to close. Edited again to correct typo. Edited again for clarity.

  22. It's disgraceful. I remember how shocked I was when returning to London in the eighties at the huge numbers of people sleeping rough eg in Waterloo. I never thought we'd be returning to those days :(
  23. I've just received the same email! It says: Thank you for your emails regarding your concerns in relation to the Temporary Traffic Regulation Order for the road closure on Crawthew Grove. 68A Crawthew Grove was permitted planning consent on 4th July 2013. Southwark Council were made aware of illegal road closures by the developer. Upon inspection, the road was found to have been closed to facilitate deliveries to the development on numerous occasions. These road closures had not been permitted or authorised by Southwark Council. In addition to the illegal closures and the unlicensed materials, containers and skips, the carriageway and footways were unsafe due to a build up of spoil from the development. There is also damage to the carriageway and damage to the footway. The developers have agreed to make good and resurface the public highway when the project is complete. As a result of our above findings Southwark Council arranged a meeting with the developers, Build4Me, to resolve these issues and to work out a way of minimising disruption and inconvenience being caused by the unplanned illegal road closures. At the meeting it was agreed for the developer to devise a programmed delivery schedule to which the Temporary Traffic Regulation Order was drafted. The Temporary Traffic Regulation Order enables the Council to agree a structured timed delivery schedule, which gives the Council visibility of planned deliveries and control of when the road will be closed. It also details an approved diversion route for displaced traffic. Crawthew Grove will only be closed for deliveries and collections. Southwark Council have agreed for a maximum of three closures per day at 10am / 12pm / 3pm, each closure being a maximum of 30 minutes, although on some days there may be less than 3 or no deliveries whatsoever. The developers were also requested to put up an information board with their contact details and to also send a notification letter out to residents in the local area informing them on the progress of the project. The footways on Crawthew Grove will remain open and the skips, containers and materials will be licensed by the Council. To ensure compliance with the above conditions, we have programmed daily site inspections for a Development Control Officer and we will continue to monitor the site. The completion date for the development at 68A Crawthew Grove is June 2014. ETA: I have now asked whether the developers were fined for the illegal road closures, and for making the footway and road unsafe.
