  1. They aren't chosen because they're the sharpest knives in the box. they're chosen to be good television - which they usually are :)

They both normally go by bike but there's no way I'm taking them by bike! The 6 year old cycles and the 4 year old has a balance bike or else goes on the back of mum or granny's (the other granny's) bike. A twenty minute walk first thing in the morning with a grumpy child is not my idea of fun. I think that's quite a long walk for a small child with little legs who can't walk as fast as her older sister. ETA: Making a big isue of it is hardly a great start to a small child's day, is it?

    My stubborn lawn!

I wonder what that will look like in a year or so though. Chamomile lawns are a nightmare to keep looking good. I realise that one has other things in it as well.
  4. Sometimes needs must :)) ETA: For example a twenty minute walk to pre-school/school with kids who are used to going on their bikes with the other granny :))
  5. ed_pete Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- How > would you feel if you were the owner of the car > cleaning business at the end of Chesterfield Grove > ? xxxxxx You mean the one where apparently (according to a thread on this forum, and I'm pretty sure it was this car cleaning business being discussed) people who leave mobiles in their cars whilst they're being cleaned there get them nicked, and the police can't do anything about it because there is no proof? OK not very wise to leave such things in your car, but I certainly wouldn't want to use an enterprise which apparently employed thieves.
  6. Cyclemonkey Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Finally if your child is around 3 or over and has > no walking impairements i would suggest they don't > need to be in a buggy xxxxxxx If you had a child between, say, 3 and 5 whining and refusing to walk, believe me you'd shove them in a buggy in a blink of an eye :))
  7. I agree too, penguin68. ETA: And Cyclemonkey.
  8. As honeybee 79 says, let's wait and see shall we. Entering into "discussion" with some posters on here makes me lose the will to live :)) Strange how some people think they have so much more expertise than the funding bodies who - having gone over the business plan with a fine tooth comb - have loaned a million pounds to the venture, but plus ca change. ETA: And why keep on and on about the same points, which honeybee 79 has already fully answered on this thread?
  9. Why are the two pessimistic posters above so keen to give us their opinions over and over again on this thread when they have nothing positive to contribute, and nothing new to say? It must be so depressing to have such a level of gloom and negativity all the time. Why not engage with this community initiative in a positive manner and suggest new ways to help make The Ivy House a success? All you have done so far is to tell everybody why you think it won't be. And so far as I know, neither of you were even at the meeting there earlier this year, which was so full that some people couldn't even get into the pub to hear what was being said. I think that you have both very badly underestimated the massive level of community support for this ground-breaking venture.

  12. You need things like hygiene certificates, for a start. My sister is a very talented cake decorator (she won an Ideal Home competition at Christmas) but when she looked into starting a business she was put off by what would be involved. Pricing is also an issue, bearing in mind the amount of time involved (assuming you are spending a lot of time personalising the cakes, as she does). I also wouldn't recommend 1&1 for hosting a website. My http://www.thegooseisout.com website is hosted with them, and I have been less than impressed with their service if anything goes wrong or you have queries. If you do not understand basic things like domain names, and will have to get to grips with building a website on top of starting your cake business, I'd either pay somebody else to do it, or else think very very carefully about whether you have sufficient time to put into all this. I don't want to put you off, so if you are really keen go for it, but I think you may be underestimating the work involved in relation to the potential financial return. ETA: And building the website is only part of it - you then have to promote the business so that potential customers will actually visit your website! And you will have to do tax returns every year as a self-employed person, which is a pain.
  13. Surely if the CCTV images had been useful, the police might have recognised the thieves? I find it very odd that they apparently couldn't be bothered to follow this up. Surely catching the thieves would prevent at least some future similar thefts?
  14. orford28 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > small cars in and out 8 pounds > xxxxxxx How do we get in touch with you? I've only washed my car twice since I bought it around six or seven years ago! Maybe it's time to depend on more than the rain :)) Not that having a clean car has ever been anywhere near the top of my list of priorities, but still .... A lot of assumptions made by the OP, btw. Good luck with your business.
  15. Oh dear. I fear my reassurance was not well founded. Last week I left a watering can half full of water in the garden overnight (at my daughter's) and in the morning there was a very bloated dead frog in it - presumably he had jumped in and then been unable to get out (though a slightly different situation as obviously in a watering can most of the top is closed off apart from the hole in the middle). Sorry, frog.
  16. Thanks GinaG3 - I must go up and have a look in person! So glad to see it!
  17. Fox, various links have already been given on this thread explaining things. Click on them and read, maybe?
  18. Anybody got any recent pictures of the house they could post on here?

I was horrified the other week to visit an open garden in Peckham which had astro-turf laid in one section :( As stated above, you need a special mix of grass seed for shade. And if you've already had turf laid and then two different lots of grass seed (is that right?) it's going to be patchy anyway with different kinds of grass. What's the garden shaded by, if it's south-facing? If a tree, that could be part of the problem. Are the patches/bare bits in the shady parts? Who laid the turf? Did they realise the garden was part-shaded? Shouldn't they be taking some responsibility for its not properly establishing? Did they give you maintenance instructions? Did you put netting over the reseeded areas and keep them watered? How large an area is it? I'm wondering whether you'd be better cutting your losses and starting again - I'd be inclined to go for nice paving rather than astroturf if you give up on grass, though. At least with some kinds of paving you can grow plants between the cracks .....

  24. I naively assumed that someone (or more than one person) must have taken these chairs in error. I do hope that that is the case and that the person/people who took them haven't read these posts and don't know where to return the chairs. If they have been taken on purpose, then I am stunned that somebody would sink so low as to steal things at a community event :(
