  2. I use FLAC because it's smaller than WAV but still lossless. However I don't use iTunes at all for anything. But anything I want to play on my car stereo I also have to rip as MP3 (or convert it later if I could be bothered) as it won't play FLAC files. Re backing up, I'm also somewhat paranoid about the possibility of two hard drives failing, even though it's unlikely, so belt and braces I use Carbonite as well. I'm not sure Carbonite is the best option actually, but I found it quite confusing comparing them all, so in the end I stuck with it.
  3. I've just done it. Not keeping the CDs, but am backing up the whole of the digital collection to an external hard drive. I got this: http://www.cocktailaudio.com/home.html Very pleased with it so far and it gets loads of useful firmware updates which are automatic as long it's connected to the internet (which mine permanently is via a WiFi dongle). I'm not particularly attached to any physical items, though I am keeping a few of the CDs which have got a lot of info in the bookets.
  4. camberwell70 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Everyone slagging off South Norwood! > East Dulwich: Row after row of identikit tiny > little rabbit hutch houses. xxxxxx I've lived in both, and I'd rather live in my present small terraced rabbit hutch house in ED than the four bedroomed much larger terraced rabbit hutch house I had in South Norwood. Where exactly are these non-identikit houses in South Norwood?
  5. It appears that it could be a problem with one of the graphics units, which is evidently a known defect with this model. ETA: I don't have the laptop here, it is with the person who is looking at it who has been noting various diagnostic signs, but thanks everybody. ETA: Fox. My OH neither smokes nor has spilt anything on his laptop. And maybe most manufacturing faults may show up during the warranty period, but it is just not true that all of them necessarily will.
  6. Just seen on an email from the person kindly looking at it that it's an HP 6735s
  7. Not sure what point you are making, Fox? Laptops sometimes go wrong however well they are looked after, as does anything with components which may fail.
  8. Right-clicking, yes one of the first things tried (by me) and nothing happened. Dulwich Fox, ditto. Someone looking at it and it isn't looking good at the moment. Shaman it's an HP, not sure of model as it isn't here at the moment, not sure of exact age, maybe five years? He can't afford to replace it. I had to buy it to replace one I spilled wine over whilst DJing :(
  9. Thanks Otta, trying to but he's out :)) Not sure if I could use my TV screen. I also once had the same problem, and it was the backlight that had failed. OH has tried shining a torch on the screen, but there is no sign of any display :( Edited again to say: Got someone looking at it now ....
  10. Can anybody help with my OH's laptop problem? On start-up, light is coming on etc but screen is black. I don't have a separate monitor to connect his laptop to. Is there any way I can connect it to my laptop so that his display is shown on my laptop's screen? Trying to eliminate possible causes of the problem. Have tried F8 to start in safe mode but that hasn't worked. Thanks.
  11. Finished the last of the Christmas cake and the sweet sherry a few days back. None of the chocolates etc lasted much beyond Christmas week :)) Stella went long ago, as did all the leftover white wine, fizzy wine, rum and brandy. Still got a bottle of dry sherry, ginger wine, several bottles of red and a bottle of gin. Oh, and about a stone of unwanted flab :))

  13. Southwark Council are actively encouraging community groups to get involved in the "It's Your Neighbourhood" scheme - see here! http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200073/parks_and_open_spaces/576/southwark_in_bloom/1 ETA: Sorry, I always assume people know what the RHS is, but probably many don't - it's the Royal Horticultural Society.
  14. EvaC Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Sainsbury's used to be > wasteland... xxxxxx It was playing fields, wasn't it? And Lordship Lane certainly wasn't dead. It had at least one butcher (not the one now there), a jewellers (not the one now there), a toy shop (not the one now there), at least one greengrocer - amongst other things.
  15. The seeds are nothing to do with councils' "In Bloom" events. They are for community gardens who are registered with the RHS. The RHS just happen to be publicising the seed sowing as part of their Britain in Bloom campaign. You can read about the "It's Your Neighbourhood" scheme here: http://www.rhs.org.uk/Gardening/Community-gardening/It-s-Your-Neighbourhood
  16. Vinyl - Everything's Alright - The Mojos. I think the second one was She Loves You - The Beatles. Then Where Did Our Love Go - The Supremes. Still got them somewhere ..... CD - Can't remember, probably something cheap from Woollies or somewhere. Dylan maybe. Can't remember my first cassette either. Download - Jon Boden's A Folksong A Day project, whatever the first month was when he started it, can't be arsed to check :)) I don't normally download stuff but it was only available as a download. ETA: Come to think of it my first download was probably off Limewire in the days before it was riddled with viruses and weird tracks.
  17. Not sure where to put this, so admin please move if it is in the wrong section. I know there are a number of community gardens in this area. If you are a local registered Bloom or It's Your Neighbourhood group, or are an RHS affiliated society, you can apply for free seeds. You may already know this! Each group can apply to receive one free seed pack, containing a selection of 15 different herb and vegetable seeds, suitable for sowing directly into the ground in April. Seed packs include: Chives, parsley, coriander, dill, garlic chives, sage, thyme, red frills mustard, radishes, carrots, fennel, spring onions, spinach, nasturtiums and marigolds (for their edible flowers). They are to be sown in public places where the wider community can enjoy the harvest - I assume all the local community gardens would come into this category. To get the seeds, either fill in the form at http://www.rhs.org.uk/britaininbloomlaunch or phone 020 7821 3069 The RHS are hoping that you will hold seed-sowing events during the weekend of 13-14 April, but otherwise any time in April is fine.

After all we > want to put on what people want to see! xxxxxxx I agree with Jeremy. I greatly enjoyed the evening you had when you showed Basquiat and had Stik there, but I've seen American Beauty several times and have the DVD as well. Edited to correct my spelling of Stik's name!
  20. Cheese Board Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I agree with all you guys. Its ridiculous, theres > a recycling centre on old kent road and just off > walworth rd. > xxxxxxx I think the one off Walworth Road has closed down and been replaced by the new one on the Old Kent Road??
  21. I had the same email. I was grateful for the update and found it useful. I posted the contents on the "How's the snow" thread earlier today.
  22. funkymadam Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! > > Isn't how i remembered it either! ;-) xxxxxxx Thank God for that, I thought I was going mad. I think there was a mural there before that one, which was lovely and much more detailed. Then that was painted over - which was a terrible thing to do in my opinion - and I think the one pictured above, if indeed it is in the same location - was then painted over the paint, if you see what I mean. The one above seems to me to be more graffiti than a mural!
  23. I lived in South Norwood in the late seventies/early eighties, and not only has there been no sign of gentrification since then, it seems to have actually gone downhill (admittedly I've only been back about twice since then, but once was quite recently!). It's always had good transport links so I can't see that affecting anything really. Depends on your priorities, surely. If cheap housing is more important to you than a pleasant environment, then go for it. The bit around the lake's quite nice but that's about it. It's true that Balham used to be quite grotty (as did Clapham), but they're both on the Northern Line.
  24. Why do they bother? If they're going to take things somewhere to dump them, why not just take them to the tip?
  25. My memory is clearly crap then, and now I can see why it was painted over :))
