Stopping estate agent tat through our letter boxes

Now if I get stuff in the post with an address but no name, I bin it (ie recycling bin :) )without opening it. Though actually maybe I'll start sending it back to the agents, without a stamp :) -

ETA: Now excuse me while I put my shawl on and go and do a bit of knitting in the parlour.

Is a flyer telling people about a local community event (in this case a street party) which they may well greatly enjoy, either in their road or in an adjoining road, and which will give them the chance to get to know their neighbours in a friendly setting, junk mail? If somebody asks for "no unsolicited mail" might they miss out on something they would actually like to know about? I'm afraid I put the flyer through everybody's letterbox even if they had a sign up :-$ Was that wrong? (That's a serious question, I'm happy to be told yes it was wrong if you really think so ..... ) -
You're joking, aren't you? ETA: Your first post on the forum. Do you work for them? Apologies if not.

We were recently delivering flyers advertising the Crystal Palace Road Big Lunch Street Party, and with some letterboxes it really is extraordinarily difficult to get things right through, especially those with brushes attached and especially if what is being delivered is quite flimsy (an A5 sheet of paper in this case). We persevered, but I can understand why some people might just give up and leave something half out. -
Alan Medic Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ...............like posting on the forum. I've been on the forum for at least three years, I'm now retired, and I was also ill for a long time last year, so yes I have had time to post a lot. Which still doesn't mean, given all the other things I have going on, that sorting out PMs has in the past been anywhere near top of my list of priorities :))
-
Thanks for that Mockney, one look at the page and I thought maybe copying and pasting might be the better option after all :))
-
StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- >anyone who posts on here as often as you or > me, can easily find the time in the day to > prioritise as we go > > xxxxxxx Thanks for your advice on using my time, which I have noted :)):)):)) I am presently having a tea break from painting my bathroom woodwork, perhaps I should be sorting my PMs instead of doing up my house :)) Sadly my prioritising has not in the past included housekeeping my PMs, purely because - in the past - I have not needed to.

Thanks Otta, yes I've created some folders already. So is there any way to save this stuff off the forum other than opening each PM and copying and pasting separately?

If people are using > there time to make money out of free items then > they obviously need the money and so therefore > better the item helps someone then just lying at > the bottom of a bin somewhere. xxxxxxx Because if several people want an item, some people - including me - would rather it went to a person who was going to make use of it themselves. I've got nothing against people making money out of items offered free, however what I do object to is people lying about the fact that they're doing it and saying that they want it for their own use when actually they don't.

Sorry to be dim. How do I move a PM into a new folder? Also, is it possible to save all my PMs off the forum elsewhere on my PC without having to copy and paste all the content? Because without reading each one it is impossible to know whether I might need to refer to it in the future, and that will take days probably :))
-
Thanks admin. I'd be happy with 300 in the longer term if that would speed up the forum, but it would be great if we could have quite a bit of warning beforehand. Of course in theory it doesn't take much effort to delete past PMs, in practice there are often more pressing things in life :)

TillieTrotter Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- some of us would like to grow old slightly less graciously. xxxxxx Hear hear! Not that being child-like has no grace :) Children are energetic and spontaneous, many of us could do with a bit more of those qualities rather than being uptight and "adult" and only undertaking activities we perceive as "suited to our age" :) :)-D

mockney piers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > All your examples Dj/sue are quite neatly > encapsulated by offline xxxx Just being pedantic (moi?) but what you actually said was "only originally intended for forumites to take a discussion off line." I don't think PMing somebody to ask if you can go and see an item for sale, for example, or PMing somebody with a query, is exactly taking a discussion off line, but hey as you say, who cares. Unfortunately I think there are likely to be a few frustrated forumites who haven't seen this thread and who can't understand why their/people they are trying to contact's mailboxes are full. Particularly those who knew their mailboxes were nowhere near full a couple of days ago :))

Surely PMs are also for people buying, selling and offering things who don't want to put their personal details online?

StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > Given that when you go into the messages section > it tells you how many you have used and how many > you have available should we not take > responsibility ourselves? xxxxxx Yes. I always keep an eye on how much space I have left. I knew I had space left. Which was why I was somewhat surprised to find I suddenly had none, and even when I deleted loads still had none. ETA: I keep a lot of old PMs for future reference. I see I will now have to copy and paste them somewhere instead. But I'm really really busy at the moment and having to make time to sort them all out with no prior warning is an absolute pain. Please don't take this as meaning I don't really appreciate the forum and the work you do, admin, as I have said oft-times in the past :) But I do feel some warning about this would have been helpful, as at present I can only contact and be contacted by people I know personally off the forum who exchange emails off the forum.

I know someone who used to live in ED who emailed to all his friends saying he was looking to marry and settle down and did they know anyone who might be compatible and could they introduce him. He got one of the email addresses wrong and it went to somebody completely else living abroad (can't remember where now). She emailed him back. Long story short, they corresponded, met, lived together, got married, had a child and now teach English in China :)) This is completely true :)
-
Sorry that was meant to be a private message :-$ Done that twice today :-$

Crikey ianr, you're on the ball :) I didn't know that! In case you're wondering (which you probably weren't), I included the other two Watersons because of their (very different but both brilliant) songwriting, not because of their singing ......
-
That's a bit poor that nobody was told - couldn't we have had a thread on the forum somewhere, maybe a sticky for a while, if you didn't want to email us all, admin?
-
Has admin reduced the amount of permitted storage in an attempt to speed up the forum? If so, sadly it doesn't seem to have worked - slower than ever tonight :-S
