White stuff on LL closing down plus Oliver Jonas
Sue replied to teddyboy23's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I know! Another pound shop! It would be worth it just to watch the reaction on here 🤣 As you were, only joking obviously, the pound shop we have now has been very disappointing, sadly. I've had bargains in pound shops in the past, but I've given up looking in this one. -

Lidl would be great, but it's not going to happen, is it? -
I do agree we must try, but I suppose it's about where we each focus our energies. If I thought that march had any hope of changing anything, I would have been on it. I'm wondering if some sort of letter or petition to Starmer signed by thousands of people and widely publicised might have more effect? But easy to say, and I have too much on my plate at the moment to start one myself

The Palmerston has changed hands (again ...)
Sue replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The only things in the Palmerston's favour (in my opinion) are that Olga (?) the manager is lovely - I hope she is still there, as I haven't seen her lately - , and that they didn't have a television during the Euros 😂 Having to put this in a new post because I can't edit my previous one, apparently due to the smiley, which I can neither delete nor add anything beneath it. I fondly remember when it was The Lord Palmerston and had old men playing dominoes. I always wondered where they went after the changes in the pub. But then that was back in the days when The Actress was The Uplands Tavern and infamous for fights. Must have been around 1991, I'm losing track of time ..... Oh! My posts have been merged! Hooray! The Castle is fairly unchanged, to be fair. Although they have done away with the juke box, which used to be excellent. Sob. -

These marches really don't seem to be having any impact, do they? I went on two, or possibly three, can't remember now, but still the situation in Gaza is heartbreaking. Meanwhile we have a change of government, which seems to have made not a jot of difference so far as this issue is concerned. I just despair really. I left the Labour Party and I didn't vote for them, both because of Starmer, but I honestly can't see that "telling Starmer" by going on a march is going to help change anything, though it might make me feel better. Sorry. I'm open to being persuaded otherwise. I admire the people who are persisting.

OK, I'll bite. If the space was too short for your car, why would you park there? Why would you not get a fine, if you were partly parked on the pavement? But a strange post for a "new poster", as I can't see what possible reason you could have for challenging a fine in the circumstances you describe, so I am suspicious as well ....

The Palmerston has changed hands (again ...)
Sue replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Going back to The Palmerston - is it just me who really hates the font they have chosen for the name of the pub at the front? They've done a good job on the painting front, but that font sets my teeth on edge. I don't know why I'm worried really. The heart of the pub was ripped out when the previous "refurb" removed all the interesting features like the pole (?) with painted plants climbing up it, and put in a mish mash of stuff which doesn't go together at all. In my opinion. -
New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham - 2024 Edition
Sue replied to Joe's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Foxtons hoardings (?) have gone from the space between the Hospice charity shop and what used to be Boss Man (can't remember its new improved name). Does anybody know what if anything is taking over the space? -
But why would the council want to do that? I genuinely can't see that that would be the reason, unless there are some shenanigans I'm not aware of.

Charity shops taking small electrical items?
Sue replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Great, thank you both! -
I know this has been raised before, but I can only find quite old threads. Are there any charity shops, preferably in ED or on an easy bus route, which take small electrical items?

Verbally assaulted by Manager of Lidl Denmark Hill
Sue replied to KLEAN KICKS 2023's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Definitely report it to Lidl Head Office, whatever other action you take. You could also try asking for witnesses on other online local forums. Absolutely disgraceful behaviour from anybody, let alone a shop manager. -
Food waste bin - what is acceptable to line it with?
Sue replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If they don't collect the newspaper, they could at least leave it in the bin, or put it back, not just dump it on the pavement 🙄 -
Yes, exactly. It wasn't dark when we got locked in the cemetery. I think it was quite early evening. I can't remember what time it closed. Obviously we should have checked, but I don't think it crossed our minds at the time.

Surely the fire brigade could have got keys from the gatekeeper? That doesn't seem like a great arrangement, particularly if the fire brigade were out at more urgent events? Fires, for example.

Food waste bin - what is acceptable to line it with?
Sue replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So your binmen took the newspaper away with the food waste? -
My partner and I once got locked into Nunhead Cemetery. They have a notice at the gate (I assume at all the entrances) which gives a phone number to ring if you are locked in. We had to wait a while, during which time we at least caused some amusement to passers by. Apparently being locked in is not a particularly rare occurrence. Does Dulwich Park not have some similar arrangement?

What do people use to contain food in the outdoor size food bin? I don't have a great deal of food waste, as I compost most of it. I had some Joseph Joseph bags (which fit my indoor bin) and some of the council green bags, but I find these bags split very easily. I tried lining the bin with newspaper (which is biodegradable) but the binmen just left the newspaper lying on the pavement after they had emptied the bin 😭 The bin gets very dirty if (or more likely when) the bags split, and I don't want to have to keep washing it.

The original post on nextdoor (posted by the young woman's mother) has been deleted, along with the comments, which I assume (but have no idea) may have been for legal reasons. I haven't seen any update. I read that two doctors who were nearby helped initially, along with another passer by. Obviously, as with many things posted online, I have no way of telling what is true and what isn't, but yes, leaping to the conclusion that the accident was due to dangerous driving seems somewhat premature, unless there was evidence of that.

Jamaican Vibes Cuisine in Lordship Lane
Sue replied to Moovart's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes, of course setting up a new business is tough. I haven't seen anything on here which suggests anybody is "trying to rip his legs out from under him". I sincerely hope that I am proved wrong about the unsuitability of his location for a lone street food stall, and that he can also make a good living from catering for parties etc. My nitpicking comment was a joke, in case it wasn't obvious 🙄 -
Jamaican Vibes Cuisine in Lordship Lane
Sue replied to Moovart's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think he's going to have problems with this location, though I wish him well and I hope I'm wrong, but it seemed to be a bad location for the beer dispensary. There's very little passing trade, there's hardly anywhere to park if you wanted to pick up something in a car and take it home, and it's quite a long way to walk from the main part of East Dulwich. -
