Just wondered if some varieties are more attractive to birds than others. Re the ducklings at Peckham Rye, there was no sign of them on Sunday afternoon - are they still there? We seemed to visit at the heron's Activity Hour - he was stuffing his beak like there was no tomorrow, what with I don't know - little fishes? Very entertaining and made a change from his usual musical statues pose. Hopefully he hasn't stuffed his beak with the ducklings :-S

Deffo a Chinese lantern. First time I saw one, a few years back, I thought it was a UFO too :-$

I'd recommend it for peace of mind.

Fliss Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Yes Saila, I remember the IRA bombings, and I was > here too at the time. I meant, my understanding was that when the wind was in a certain direction, planes approached the airports from a different direction, and hence didn't come over East Dulwich :)) There are forum threads about it :)) And Saila never mentioned IRA bombings? Oh, maybe it's just past my bedtime, think I'll go and chop up some flyers ....

Saila Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/sep/30/british-b > rothers-terror-attack-europe > > they keep harping on about this - perhaps i should > turn the radio off more xxxxxxxxx Well obviously there's always a risk, I just wonder whether there's actually a greater risk than usual at the moment or whether something is expected just because it's been a long time since the last one? I was living in London during the time of the IRA bombs, and it seemed you couldn't go out at all without some scare somewhere - stations seemed to be evacuated on a regular basis, and you were constantly coming across cordoned off areas. I got used to scarpering pretty sharpish. Sorry, off topic.

Fliss Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Nothing in the > skies makes it especially spooky. Certainly on some mornings there isn't any air traffic.

Saila Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > could they have been doing a dry-run terrorist > training exercise? just an idea - they keep saying > they're expecting some incident soon xxxxxxx Who keeps saying that? Not saying you're wrong, I have been thinking the same thing for some time, but I don't recall actually having seen or heard anything to that efect. Just seem to be more police about than usual at stations etc..

I will consult my insurance company to see what they say. Another concern apart from fire with not leaving the key in the door is that I may lock myself out. When it's in the door I always remember to take it out with me. -

I live in Ulverscroft Road and yes there would be problems with parking and traffic flow. On the other hand I love the market and would like to see more stalls, provided the stuff being sold is of a reasonable standard .... even if I can't afford it, I like to know it's there :) I'd also be happy to see stalls there all week.

UnderhillOliver Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If your door has a bolt or chain then use it! > Don't leave the key in the door. xxxxx Thanks for some useful tips, but have I misunderstood this? I always keep my front door locked with the mortice lock whilst I'm in the house, but I keep the key in the door. My brother nearly died when a flat he was staying at caught fire at night. The owner had locked the front door, the key was not in it, they couldn't get at the key and they couldn't get out. Luckily they were able to take refuge on a balcony and a neighbour called the fire service in time, but if there had been no balcony that would have been it. ETA: Re the external lights - please be considerate of your neighbours. It is very very annoying to have a mega bright security light shining into your living room or bedroom all night.
