Arriva buses and 20MPH rule pass ED train station
Sally Eva replied to trinidad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Southwark has reset several speed cameras to 20mph. You can tell which ones they are. They have 20 signs underneath the little picture of a camera on the warning signs and the marks on the road have been recalibrated. You can also tell by the behaviour of drivers who slow for the 20mph cameras which are signed 20 and have been recalibrated but do not slow for the 20mph cameras which are marked 20 but have not been recalibrated. The speed camera on Westwood Hill (the road to Crystal Palace) is marked 20 and has been recalibrated. -
Arriva buses and 20MPH rule pass ED train station

take the bus number, route time, etc and report it to TfL there is a complaints page with a special section for buses. You get a personal response a few days later. Keep doing it. They are under pressure from their bosses to follow timetables. These timetables need to stick to 20mph timings. That may mean more buses so pressure will be needed. You can apply it. Also it would be terrible, selfish driving from anyone at all so you can apply the same principle to white vans with an employer's name on them etc Best Wishes -
This close passing of cyclists (sometimes within touching distance) is against the Highway Code but very difficult to enforce. West Midlands Police ran traps to catch drivers doing this. A cycling policeman in plain clothes but with a video camera on his helmet cycled peacefully along and when dangerously overtaken he radioed to his uniformed mates further up the road who stopped the driver. Their remit was to warn him about the close passing but at the same time they found that such drivers often had no tax, insurance, MOT or driving licence. The Met are planning to copy this. They are still working out the finer details (like how and where to do it).

"Out of rush hour this system is virtually empty." yes indeed it is. So traffic what traffic there is expects to go fast. commercial drivers use this route as a cut through between Peckham High Street and East Dulwich Lane. Cuts off a big congested corner. these same drivers are counting on the time saving and want to go fast. If you get in their way, they shout, hoot, try and weave around and generally are unpleasant. Experienced cyclists know that however threatening such behaviour is, it does not normally escalate to physical contact and can therefore be ignored. But beginning cyclists do not know this and are frightened and upset -- which is the purpose of this behaviour. It's no good going "I've been cycling for years in London and I'm not frightened". Maybe not, but many people are -- and consequently don't use the Gyratory.

I run the Bike Train. I would never take new cyclists round Bellenden Gyratory. I use it once a week -- unavoidably and out of the rush hour -- and every time some unpleasant driver who wants to go that little bit faster cuts me up. I understand that others aren't frightened and upset but I am. I'm an experienced female cyclist who has been cycling in London for years. Bellenden Gyratory is a place I would go a long way to avoid if it were possible. ed_pete Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > mikeb Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > DiD - I'm a cyclist and I disagree: the one-way > > system is easy - 11 years commuting through it > and > > I've never felt threatened. > > Same here any tinkering with this junction is a > waste of money as far as I can see from a cycling > perspective and just likely to aggravate the > driving community even further. > Cycle journeys don't start and end with this > one-way system. Trains cancellations - latest
Sally Eva replied to DovertheRoad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's not the time of year to push cycling as an alternative, I know, but on Wednesday we are running one of our rare Winter Bike Trains. Full details are on the whats'on thread. The weather forecast for as far ahead as Wednesday is a bit meaningless but it's not actually bad at the moment. If you are interested in the WBT or want help cycling anywhere else because of the strike(s) you can text me on 07842 640 207 or pm me any time -

Another ill-thought out council plan....
Sally Eva replied to Rockets's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I knew (slightly) someone who worked in the Bradenham block on the albany Road. It was very difficult to park around the block. In great indignation she told me that she had driven from her home (in East Dulwich) driven around the Bradenham area FOR HALF AN HOUR and then had to go home and catch a bus. Not many buses on that route -

Oh well, that's one excuse for loud threatening revving behind me out of the window. I now know that drivers behind me are doing it on purpose not just because it's difficult not to. nunhead_man Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > "drivers almost can't drive at 20mph without their > engine making a terrible noise -- it's longing to > go faster " > > I'm afraid that's rubbish Sally Eva - I have a > motor with 350 bhp - two stage turbo flat 4 - > that happily burbles along at 20mph in third gear > at 2000 rpm at 20mph in London and goes into > roller skate mode when on motorways

sorry, I'm probably out of date. I don't watch TV or go to the cinema much so I don't see adverts for cars. What I am trying to say is that cars are advertised for speed (or were last time I noticed) and that, in practice, it is impossible in London to do these speeds and this causes frustration which finds an outlet in dangerous overtaking. Brief bursts of dangerous speed in other words
-
I don't think I'm talking so much about the power of the car as the gearing -- it's the 0-60 in 30 seconds bit -- drivers almost can't drive at 20mph without their engine making a terrible noise -- it's longing to go faster -- if they go up a gear the engine in tugging at them. There's no comfortable place in which to do 20mph. It's quite hard to drive slowly, and it shouldn't be. Quite small cars are geared like this, I think.
-
I wonder if it's because cars are designed (and sold) on their power and acceleration. People buy them -- and then all that power and acceleration is useless to them. These statistics are a few years old http://www.itv.com/news/london/update/2012-11-19/tfl-average-traffic-speeds-are-less-than-20-mph-in-london/ but they show that the average speed across London is less than 20mph and across central London less than 10mph. What use is a car that does 0-60 in under 30 seconds? Even the most brainless petrol head must get some suspicion that he is paying a lot to get an advantage over someone else and he's just not getting his money's worth. So all that frustration comes out. He'll show you............ Forget about him and have a peaceful evening

Beware phone stolen tonight on Lordship Lane
Sally Eva replied to Laroon's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The other approach is not to buy second-hand mobile phones. Gumtree is a good source of doubtful phones. And don't hand over cash for second-hand mobiles in McDonalds -- people do, you'd be surprised. What would not surprise anyone is that such mobiles stop working soon after purchase and the mobile phone on which the buyer contacted the vendor doesn't work any more and the buyer has no address, landline etc. The police are no help -- they consider the above to be a variation on receiving stolen goods. -
Lewisham cyclists do this sort of thing. Train out to Kent and then cycle around. Or Southwark Cyclists Healthy Rides -- those may be more pootling than you want -- they are slow and easy paced around local backstreets and central London. Have you looked at Skyrides which include children if you want to take them with you?

Bus noise on Red Post Hill
Sally Eva replied to redposthillresident's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Am I misunderstanding something? Are we talking about Red Post Hill? The 37 goes along this road for about 50m. this 50m is largely non-residential having the station and the bridge and tracks underneath the road on either side. The value of the properties alongside the road is just not relevant. People in cheap houses -- even public rented housing -- have children and gardens and like to sleep at night. How much anyone paid for their property and whether they have lost money on it (hypothetically) is simply not relevant. The money doesn't buy exemption from the needs of others. The poor have more understanding of this than those who are used to buying their own way. That's all. -
Bus noise on Red Post Hill
Sally Eva replied to redposthillresident's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"I can't imagine why someone would pay ?1.5m to live on a street with three buses (and one of them a night bus) trundling down it daily!" Some people use buses and therefore would not be offended by a street with 3 buses (one of them a night bus) trundling down it daily. Maybe people with ?1.5m to spend on a house don't use buses but other people do. When you spend ?1.5m you buy the house and the garden but not control over the road outside. Other people are still permitted to use it and even poor people on buses are permitted to be driven along it. Trying to see other people's point of view (see RH's post) can be very liberating and even re-assuring. The noise is not an attack on your entitlement to peace and quiet. It is the sound of other people going about their legitimate business.
