  1. With the decreasing influence of the church, composers of this time were beginning to compose highly decorated and elaborate melodies. I am a great fan of Purcell, Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann and Handel to name but a few. I love the contrasting music of this era, just take a look at the Fugues by Bach and Handel for example. Now I enjoy a good Fugue as much as the next person but I don't think anyone can argue that it was Purcell's compositions that heralded the beginning of this fantastic new era. (Of course, he seems not to have cared so much for the Air and Variations of which the Elizabethans were so fond.)
  2. Reopens on 15 March apparently. Advertising for chefs, bar staff and ... baristas. Are those (gigantic) hanging outdoor lamps new or were they always there? :-S

  4. Radiant One, I can make this one (sans invisible friend). See you in Franklins xx
  5. I don't mind texts as they have their place for quick exchange of info but agree its really annoying if it goes on so long that you'd BOTH have had time to pick up the phone and call anyway. BBMs are the best tho. am with voyageur - I hate it when people say '.....ALREADY' too, sorry GG edited because: no likey, not needy anymore, and a certain someone is now sending me 'how R u?' texts ;-)
  6. Has anyone seen Treacle? No, not the dark sticky stuff found on aisle 6 - the film. It's good.
  7. I've changed my mind. After careful consideration I'm now going to vote for M&S, rather than Waitrose, on Lordship Lane. With its own pedestrian crossing. Thanks.

  9. citizen - thanks to you, I looked up at the sky last night because of this thread and it was so clear, absolutely amazing sight.
  10. Huguenot, if you discount Tom's single initial response to this thread in support of the Reliant, it seems like it is you you you that is hijacking it to talk about Tom Tom Tom hence the subsequent posts about him. I think you've inadvertently given the DVVS more discussion time on this forum than they have themselves :))

    Indian Food

Swadesh. Or if you're staying in, Waitrose microwave Indian Promises selection is f-a-b.
  12. I can't believe that you started a W-a-i-t-r-o-s-e thread in the Lounge, Nette. Don't we have enough pages and pages of it on this forum? If I hear about the possibility, or not, of whether there will be a W-a-i-t-r-o-s-e in ED ever again I will scream (6)
  13. Only if they aren't 'glamping' this year.
  14. El Pibe - great project, not boring at all and doing it this way as a new development will help reduce costs. Insulation = key. I would hope that at least your architect knows about thermal briding tho. Solar PV does not need direct sunlight they are capable of generating some electricity on cloudy days. Micro CHP is still powered by mains gas or LPG, which is very expensive in rural areas. Biomass waste wood chips/pellets/logs worth thinkgin about. Choice of air/or ground source heat pumps would be dependent on your heating demands and what other heating you have (eg air to air ones don't provide hot water, do you want underfloor heating at low temp over long period of time etc). Air source is easier to install than ground source but this may not be aproblem in your case. For generation, mini wind (needs a detached property) but costs would be huge and not related to what it delivers. Check if there are any financial incentives for investing in new technology which may help and good luck! am going to send you some links too which should help you to choose.
  15. Tagines. Galileo thermometers. Hunter wellies. Slankets.
  16. I can't believe this thread hasn't been lounged for having nothing to do with ED or at least sent to forum graveyard yet....Waitrose. Waitrose. Bloody Waitrose. How has ED managed without one all this time? Edited to add: what about making this a 'sticky'? Ah go on.
  17. I say! What an absolutely spiffing idea to whoever came up with it. I vote Waitrose for LL! Bring it on...
  18. There should really be some kind of pancake competition in ED today. I think its a bit crepe that I haven't seen anything advertised. PS what about that cooking show where two chefs go head to head and have to cook a perfect omelette in under 30 seconds. Now that's competitive.
  19. the stieg larsson trilogy books and 'the killing' Faeroese knitted jumpers.

Or is it? :-S
  21. hal but the point is that no-one is going to invest in this just to send people to Mars, are they? from what I gather from the article its been hugely expensive to produce synthetic meat and unless it goes mainstream and on the shelves, it won't be developed further. I think it was also about addressing growing problems of feeding the people on THIS planet, not for space missions which I thought were increasingly becoming 'unmanned' anyway.
  22. I guess you're right, El P, there are plenty of people who don't think twice about how their meat is produced so growing it in a lab is not much different. Taste-wise I am imagining something similar to quorn? Perhaps it will become so common-place that we'll wonder how we ever managed without it.
  23. So I keep reading about this in the news lately and the motivation seems to be partly animal welfare/partly environmental impact. I'm sure 'test-tube' burgers will become reality to address the needs of a growing population and that animals use up a lot of water/grain/grass that we likely won't have in the future but ... I am not sure. What do you reckon?
  24. 5-ply velvet mash :-S (only joking) Just had to resurrect this thread as its traditional to do so on Spring-like days. Is it Spring yet? It must be. Snowdrops have been out for aaages.
  25. Suspected gang activity, innit.
