  1. Blimey, a few people getting their knickers in a twist about church attendance faith schools. In my humble opinion, churches and church goers have nothing to complain about. You get a captive audience to sell your faith to for a year or so. If at the end of that time parents don't wish to continue attending that's entirely up to them. Think of it as an opportunity to spread the word :)
  2. Loads of these little buggers (Rosemary Leaf Beetles) in our rosemary and sage at the moment. Decimating the plants, and every time they're removed more turn up. Seen plenty of Harlequin Ladybirds too.
  3. The only 2 ways I know are a nightmare on a Friday. Either south of the river along the South Circular to Kew Bridge etc. or through Vauxhall turn left along the north bank of the Thames, Earls Court, left onto the A4/M4. Both very slow. I'd love to hear of a quicker route.
  4. This forum is bad for your health. First there's a biscuit thread in The Lounge, and now a flapjack one here. Bad for those of us of the easily tempted sweet tooth persuasion. I love flapjacks. A holy trinity of oats syrup and fat. Can't wait to try these from the Cheeseblock as they've been so highly recommended.
  5. Jacobs Fig Rolls. More of a pastry than a biscuit, so not much use if you're after something crisp.
  6. I lived in Cleethorpes circa 1978 and I can assure you that a Mexican Restaurant was way off the radar back then. We did have 1 indian restaurant though where you had to where a tie to get in. I've eaten in El Passo twice, and both times the "boil in the bag" style rice have put me off.
  7. St John's & St Clements is having a boot sale on 12th May. May be worth a look?
  8. Got to be the guy in Cheers for me. Always cheers me up when I've had to pop to the shop to pick up something I've run out of.
  9. I've heard that there are delays to the project as Southwark Council are insisting that the schools victorian facade is maintained, whereas the developers want to level the site and start from scratch. Can you throw any light on this Richard? In my opinion it would be tragic to miss the 2009 opening date because of this issue, there are plenty of other victorian schools in the area, so I don't think we're talking about preserving a site of particular architectural interest here. Of course I should reserve judgement until I see what the developers are proposing to replace it with.
  10. The Grimsby Evening Telegraph? You don't hear that mentioned much on the forum. I thought I was the only person in SE22 from around those parts. For anyone who's interested, enjoy reading it here
  11. I too think it's valid to find something so dull that it's hard to muster up the energy to understand it. I'll join *Bob* in enjoying watching the feathers fly from the sidelines though :)
  12. Our son made friends with a little boy of the same age on a campsite in Vendee, France. Turned out he was from Rodwell Road. Small world.
  13. Is this the festival that has had people such as Bill Bailey and Hugh Cornwell playing in a big tent on Goose Green in past years? If so, they were thoroughly enjoyed. More of that please.
  14. Yep, Southwark Council web site shows that planning permission has been granted for Bombay Bicycle Company to change No. 83 from betting shop to takeaway with a small restaurant having 6-9 covers. See here.
  15. I think an M&S or a Waitrose would be a soulless addition to the High Street. I regularly visit friends in Chorlton Manchester, and they have a great co-operative supermarket there www.unicorn-grocery.co.uk/ incorporating fresh veg, wholefoods, deli, bread, alcohol sales and other general groceries. I'd love to have that sort of shop nearby. Unfortunately, I suspect a large space to house such a shop would be too expensive to make it feasible now that East Dulwich is so "Successful". SMBS is great too , but tiny and often cramped at weekends. I'd be happy to see them expand into bigger premises. A bike shop as mentioned in a previous post would be great.
  16. The "after hours drinking den" used to be next door to The Yilmaz which they've now converted into a restaurant.
  17. Yep, plenty of my friends recommend Tandoori Nights too, but they're all carnivores. I just can't get past the frozen mixed veg in the dishes, (using the uniform carrots and pieces of sweetcorn as evidence). I actually think we're pretty poorly served down Lordship Lane in terms of the variety of indian food. All the restaurants are much of a muchness. If I want "authentic" indian food I go down Drummond Street in Euston, or the Shahee Bhelpoori in Norbury is also good as mentioned previously in this thread. The Ganapati is OK but overpriced.
  18. Nostalgia time... Can anyone else remember the indian restaurant that used to be on Northcross Road on the same block as Pretty Traditional. It was like walking into someone's front room. The food was the same old generic tandoori fare though. There used to be a butchers, newsagents and Health food shop on the same block. I'm sure the butchers and health food shop would have done very well nowadays. As far as todays indian restaurants, as a veggie I find the Surma by far the best, with The Coriander a close second. Tandoori Nights and Curry Cabin just seem to throw some frozen veg in a bland sauce for their veggie dishes. btw, how come The Curry Cabin has gone form 0% in your poll to 22% in a couple of days? Have you been infiltrated?
  19. Blue Brick Cafe on Fellbrigg Road. They do real chips, not nasty frozen ones.
  20. I got caught fooling the barriers last year. Forgot to buy my travelcard, saw the huge queues at the ticket booth on the platforms and doubled up with my partner to get through the barriers. Unfortunately a revenue protection officer was stood on the other side disguised as a biker and caught me bang to rights. He chose to ignore the mitigating factors that I had to get a travelcard to continue my journey to Swiss Cottage anyway, and that I'm famously forgetful, which is fair enough I suppose as I could have been lying :) Anyway, they prosecute and take the case to court. I pleaded guilty in my absence and got a couple of hundred fine. Don't risk it!
  21. This story in the South London Press sounds related:
  22. We're very lucky with access to green space in East Dulwich. Don't forget a quick bus ride up Lordship Lane towards Sydenham takes you to Hornimans Gardens. A great green space including a small animal enclosure for the kids to look at, and of course a fabulous free museum with exhibitions and activities for kids most weekends.
  23. Probably not feasible as Lordship Lane is a main arterial route. However, the pedestrianisation of Northcross Road at weekends from Lordship Lane up to the junction of Lacon/Ulverscroft Road would get my vote.
