Take a horse and ride with it under your thigh for about four hours. Should be tasty, cooked and tender. 'It' being the bacon.

ED Nature Watch

Re my comments on the seductive lure of yew berries recently, I am rereading "Moonfleet" written in 1898 at the mo and came across this: [The protagonist is sitting on a tomb surround by yew trees] "... and many times in autumn I have seen the stone slab crimson with the fallen waxy berries, and taken some home to my aunt, who liked to taste them with a glass of sloe-gin after her Sunday dinner." My interested piqued, a little googling came up with The Wild Food School which states: YEW [Taxus baccata] Regarded as one of THE most poisonous and deadly plant materials around the scarlet berries of yew contain a slightly sugary gloop surrounding the seed and which can be extracted by VERY GENTLY squeezing the berry. The inner brown-black seed is deadly poisonous and must not be eaten. If you wish to try the yew berry sap it is ESSENTIAL to check your personal tolerance before trying. In any event only try the sap of one or two berries as a larger quantity might well contain a sufficient build up of toxins which could cause harm. One best left to foraging professionals. Anyone prepared to try it? Edited for grievous spelling mistakes -
So the leg-spinner, Anil, is one man short of an eleven and says to the assistant management accountant, "Play, Mistry, for me" Sorry - it's a slow afternoon.

Bit of a disaster - ended up with only two and a half pots. Anyhoo, add 500g of sugar to every 500ml of liquid and a tablespoon of lemon juice*. Bring slowly to boil, making sure sugar has dissolved first. Let it do a rolling boil for about 15 mins Check it's ready by drizzling a little onto a chilled plate, put back in fridge for 2 mins and if it wrinkles when you gently push it, it's done. Stir in a teaspoon+ of dried chilli. Pour/ladle into sterilised jars, put lids on. *the lemon juice was an addition this year, not sure it worked - caused everything to super-scum. Perhaps it is better added to original apple mix. David - thank you for your kind comments. x I used apples from P.Rye Park - they are more minature than crab. The tree is in the Japanese Garden. I did notice, however, that there are loads of crab apples in Highshore Road there for the picking.

Paul & Rachel Chandler have been released and are safe. Apparently a ransom was paid. -
Katie - real life got in the way of real time! My liquid has dripped through the jelly bag and is now covered (where do all those fruit flies come from?) and will have to wait until tomorrow to be processed. I'll report back.

I've been musing on this one. I don't like it, but is it any different to selling a VC?

Am typing to the aroma of simmering crab apples - gorgeous! Crab Apple & Chilli Jelly Scrump 2lb of crab apples in Peckham Rye Park while avoiding over-zealous park warden Roughly chop one chilli - add to pot, seeds and all. Cover with enough water so they bob about. Bring to boil, simmer for 40 mins. Put into jelly bag and leave overnight or for as long as you can be bothered. This is a recipe in real time, so next instalment later today.

Sounds good to me. -
For goodness sake Hal - these sites are run on a voluntary basis. Even with the new advertising, I doubt very much Admin will be able to draw a salary and retire from his daily job. I think this is a superb local resource (speaking as a fuzzy-fringe member). If there were a viable Peckham alternative, no doubt I would be on there, but as it is, I am using and enjoying this forum. Since there is a dedicated Nunhead Forum, it's not unreasonable for Admin to direct Nunhead users/suppliers to that one. If anything, that would dilute the number of users on this site and decrease the potential for revenue from advertisers. Nunhead Forum doesn't carry any banner advertising so there is nothing to be gained.

Plain wrong indeed.

I'v taken photos from the platform and inside - but I did ask permission first. Maybe a little courtesy smooths the wheels. -

Sometimes this Forum is priceless! Thanks Admin.

The sponsor ads are truly annoying. I understand they want placement for their money, but perhaps they could be laid out horizontally rather than vertically?

How wonderful. Congratulations Moos Family.
