  1. camber tennis courts by the harvester are great - i'm a member and recommend - nice spot.
  2. The stabbings were a youth gang thing, according to a few policemen who spoke to my spouse who works at Dulwich Park. Brixton vs a gang in the east dulwich housing estates toward forest hill - not sure what the housing estate is called...
  3. had a drink last night. reasonably fine place - nice staff. if you are tall, stay upstairs. i am unsure about the fashion video. but it seemed to attract a girl crowd. even with that, there must be something better to show... an improvement over the tivoli.
  4. If you are considering a state school like the Dulwich Infants or Hamlet, bear in mind they measure the distance to your front door. So, see which is closer...No need if you are going private... Woodwarde has a nicer feel to it otherwise... Best, Otto
  5. I just ran into my neighbor from an adjacent street who was a partial witness - very shook up. He said "I've lived here 25 years and I've never seen anything like that".
  6. a cool highly selective second-hand furniture shop...
  7. Hi - I actually prefer the gowlett pizza but atmosphere and beer probably help...none-the-less, I've only tried one variety at the new place so far... it is great to have a spot closer to home for take-a-way, daytime hours, etc...and the nicest guys run it.... after a few more, perhaps I would say it is better than gowlett, but, not yet. Value and size wise, the new place wins.
  8. brought the children this evening for an early dinner - what an excellent choice for a 5pm meal when most places are closed...the children loved it and the owners were very kind. Pizza was thin crusted - pasta was perfectly cooked... It is dangerously too close to my house...!
  9. i usually cycle. but i have a major sinus infection and no energy to do so this week. thanks for the kind commentary. btw...the point of the post was bad parking that might cause an accident and a giant lorry.
  10. Ah. One year later, the big gigantic lorry has taken up residency on my road a few streets away. It is currently parked at a corner elbow and it will be a miracle if it does not cause an accident as there is no way to see if there is oncoming traffic. The giant lorry has appeared most days this week and seems to have taken up residency. A van has joined it on occasion. All this on a very busy hard-to-park-on street...the giant lorry seem clever enough to migrate during school run hours so that there are no spaces when we get back... Bah.
  11. DCPS is not letting the JAPS girls in the door to pick up siblings. They have also been banned from the DCPS school breakfast. The girls were standing forlornly outside this afternoon... On the other hand, the headmaster is continuing to shake every child's hand every morning at the nursery...
  12. Thanks for the update. How terrible. Sending best wishes and thoughts of better days ahead to her from a fellow forumite - Otto
  13. I heard about five serious screams (female) last night just after I drifted off to sleep. It was horrifying. I live one street away. I was about to phone the police when I heard several ambulances and police cars arrive very very shortly after. Please tell me she is ok. I was up with worry much of the night. Otto
  14. Genteel perhaps, but it is correct. WHO renamed it. They dropped the swine part of the name last week.
  15. catch it, bin it, kill it. just be polite and sneeze into tissues as advised.
  16. eclectic my vote as well...eclectic in a really over the top way... xo,otto
  17. ha. apologies - previous thread on same dissolved into nonsense so i thought i'd start a new one...looks like the same for this one...you are a quick bunch...;)
  18. Hi - FYI - neighbor's car window smashed last night sometime...tell grove. Nothing in car to take and a non-descript car... Bah. otto
  19. Yes - good link. Skipping the earnings side (being paid in an alternative currency) of the idea and concentrating on the small businesses issuing the currency at a discount keeps it a working idea...and generates business for the local shops and discounts for the consumers... Or maybe too much effort for a tiny spot? It is at least an idea worth discussion and pondering...
  20. yes...thanks for that - meant to mention that too! So why not ED?
  21. I keep reading about all these alternative currencies in use in small towns in America. Basically, the local businesses get together, print "community" money and people can exchange regular dollars or pounds for this new money for 10% off - eg one pound costs 90p. The idea is to give people a deal, and, to get people to buy local - the local shops accept the alternative currency as currency which encourages traffic and supports the local independent shopowners. Interesting idea but surely not foolproof...food for thought anyway. See here for a incredibly tedious pontificating video that gives an idea of how it works in Ithaca New York...it does not have to be so political an idea, but, it seems to be in Ithaca...in Ithaca, the scheme is a bit different in that you can also choose to receive the currency for pay or, use it to pay a worker which makes a bit more involved (and potential tax issue) than just a shopkeeper enterprise... http://missmarketcrash.blogspot.com/2009/04/print-your-own-money.html Best, Otto
  22. i think it is fantastic!
  23. Many insurers will not insure anything with any box ticked with subsidence. our surveyor got around this issue by calling it "historic" subsidence due to wwII bombing damage....;) otto
