  1. Hang on....the dispute was about rule 188 which came about because of failure to agree on shift changes. There were no disclosures of planned cuts at that stage. Now there was never going to be any suprise about cuts given the governments recent spending review which demands financial cuts (of up to 20% in the first year) to ALL public services. The question is how is that achieved. LFB haven't as yet published any intent to cut fire engines or jobs. But Coleman's view can be taken as a statement that is likely to happen. The only question is whether London really does have too many fire engines (his view). I would rather see some data instead of being 'told you so'. Neither the FFs or the LFB have won the argument yet. The case now has to be made for the inevitible decision on what is to be cut. The Union and FFs are always going to say any cut is bad. Coleman and the LFB are going to say the opposite. The truth as always will probably be somewhere in between. I'd ask this question of ffs, given that cuts will have to happen, where do they think the savings can be made (shift changes were supposed to deliver greater efficiency - does anyone know what that would have saved in itself budget wise, if anything)? That surely would be the counter argument to cutting fire engines and jobs. As yet I can't seem to find any union view on that but that is something that will have to be figured out if the FFU is going to stop (and I think it can) the loss of 27 fire engines. Digging in, and fighting a battle of attrition, is only going deliver one winner....and that is management I'm afraid.
  2. To be fair though, the latest development is that 27 (I think) fire engines that were removed to cover the strike from fire stations have still not been returned to those stations and it seems now that there are plans to cut those fire engines from the London service after Coleman two days ago said he thinks London has too many fire engines. I'd like to see more of how this might affect the fire service, jobs and cover before having a formed view but this does seem to be a step in a previously undisclosed direction (if only it is Coleman's view, rather than any drawn up plans). There's no mention of cutting engines in the aspects (of contract) that were at the heart of the recent dispute (as cited by Coleman and the LFB). Whilst I continue to think the proposed shift changes make sense, I might take a different view on plans to cut engines and jobs if pursuaded that would have a negative impact on London's fire cover.
  3. Yeah but schoolchildren already know years before they do their GSCE's if they are working towards making it to University or not. So it's never really a choice they make at 18. But the cost might definitely be something that makes them change their mind at 18, or makes them reconsider what kind of degree they apply for.
  4. I agree with FT...there are lots of great bands and also lots of great individual performers. And you will see some of them watching X factor, artists like Beyonce and Rihanna. Ultimately, the truly talentless aside, taste in music and artists is subjective for most people, and generation does come into it too. There is no doubt that Beyonce Knowles is one of the most talented artists ever, and her music is good but her style of music is not for everyone. It is total snobbery to think that only generic bands that write their own songs and play their own instruments have any value or talent. Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley, I could list hundreds who never wrote a song, but were elevated into greatness because of their vocal talent, and whose music was of it's time.
  5. But what ARE the accident stats. Until James can tell us you don't know what they are. And also some of those accidents will be driver error that no amount of tweaking to the junction will prevent. Let's see the stats, and see what options if any might be possible.

Ah, what I'm referring to are the sponsored links...I understand now...
  7. We'll all have to be professors soon just to stand out. Ridiculous. Degrees are becoming a devalued currency. This is very true.
  8. What has this got to do with dancing? Or are you suggesting dancers should write the tunes they dance to lol.

Are we talking about the banner that runs accross the page about halfway down? If so, it doesn't bother me at all. I don't really notice the ads to be honest (which is probably not what the sponsors wnat to hear!)
  10. The music business has always had a combination of artists from different platforms. Some bands/ artists are manufactured/ packaged or 'managed', others are their own creation. And the majority of performing artists have never written their own songs.....and that's true for any decade going back as far as you like.
  11. They broke the front window cate, and climbed through it. There was no way for them to open a window or door.
  12. I just watched it on iplayer. The aerial photography really hits home the scale of it. And how moving for the daughter at the end to see her father on film. I personally think that WWl stands out because it was an arrogant war, both in it's causes and the attitudes of those that so enthusiastically took europe into it. The tragedy is the human suffering and cost and poetry seems to be the idea medium for comunicating that. There also wasn't yet the mass media, that would follow WWll.
  13. Sorry I meant 320....full stop typo error (have editted it now). Fiona Colley said it was 320 million (it was followed by a point on the waste of 100 million on the call centre) which is in line with the budget report. James seems to not know what the annual budget of his own council is.
  14. Whatever jrussel...you are getting extremely boring now. And BS award of the year? Goes to YOU.
  15. Minor prangs won't be reported to Police but can only be included in stats if there is a an official record of them somewhere that the council can access (a forum isn't that unfortunately). Out of interest james, how many reported accidents have there been?
  16. Funnily enough that is exactly what happened to a house of a friend. I spent the day fitting unbreakable locks with metal strip reinforcements. I made the door unbreakable too....and put up a sensor security light. Two days later, thieves unable to get through the locks just broke the window panes. And nobody heard a thing!
  17. Some bolt locks won't hold if there is rot in the endges of the frames or the wood is soft. They are no match for a crowbar levering up. Restrictors work quite well but make sure they are locked because otherwise all it will take to open them is a metal rule.
  18. Ann is the equivalent of Wagner on the other side!
  19. Funny that because at the last Nunhead and Peckham Rye CC meeting..Fiona Colley said it was around 320 million per annum and indeed the Budget Book 2010/11 says; General fund revenue budget On 23 February 2010 council assembly set a balanced general fund revenue budget of ?320m for 2010/11 with a 0% increase in the level of council tax for Southwark?s element. And the year before; General fund revenue budget On 23rd February 2009 council assembly set a balanced general fund revenue budget of ?315m for 2009/10 with a 0% increase in the level of council tax for Southwark?s element. But either way....wardens chasing dog poo is not cost effective.

This is shaping up to be a really good documentary series.
  21. >:D
  22. Yep...I sat alone in the corner of my bedroom depressed and bored and listening to the Smiths on a loop >:D
  23. And imagine a public school system of such excellence based entirely on merit/intellect as well. Any real effort to break inequality for future generations must surely include an end to any education system that gives opportunity based on parental affluence.
  24. Like I am cause of the filth.....lmao....you are not called lady Muck for nothing....!
  25. Never a waste of time...I love it...do allsorts on it, buy, sell, download stuff, watch stuff, chat, troll, gamble, it's all I need >:D
