Snowboarder - are you my neighbour??? We were talking about the houses yesterday and you told me about your recent snowboarding in Mirabelle???
  2. The more the merrier. :)) Damzel - welcomes to Landells! Hope you are settling in. If you need anything from your neighbours, feel free to send me a private message.
  3. Yes, if Mr Ko has had a particularly heavy session, I have to hold his hand and drag him the *normal* way home rather than the 'lets-go-and-explore-because-I-can't-remember-the-way-home-and-I-like-walking-in-circles' route...;-)
  4. That's 11 people now: The Ko's + neighbour Chuff The Louisiana's The Nutty's The Bald Marauder's Kathryn?
  5. My neighbour is also interested in coming along as he is quite interested in the environmental side. I really want to see the underground water collection tanks although Mr Ko told me that we probably wouldn't be able to see it - silly me! Evening/weekend would be best. The 6 foot palm was amazing. I shouted to Bill from my window saying how I loved it - I want one now!!!!
  6. I think any gay/straight couple holding hands is sweet! Even after being with my husband for a good few years, we still hold hands all the time!

Told my other half about this thread and his reaction was 'Oh god we don't want that stress'. He lived in a CPZ for 2 years and it was a nightmare. Parking wasn't any easier. Yes, bays were suspended (sometimes when he wasn't parked on his road but one road away) and his car got towed away twice with a very hefty release fee and inconvenience of having to go to some not-very-near place and collect it. We still used to have to circle around the block a couple of times to find a space. I agree though that some CPZ can work though as Capt Birdseye has had experience of this. I believe its really an argument that can't have a right answer because there are so many pros and cons on both sides!!!!!!! If someone can afford the running costs of a second/third car and really thinks it is a necessity rather than, as is often the case, a luxury, then a second permit at even ?500 may not put them off. I also agree with Bobby P that the lack of restrictions is one less stress to deal with and London already has enough stresses. Living off LL or, in particular, on the road next to a station is always risky. There is the convenience but also the risk. However I know someone who often drives to ED station even though he could easily get a bus down LL!

I heard the one on Landells was an old bakery. Wooster and Stock called it 'The Ship' - not sure why? I love Dulwich Library and Dulwich Hospital (heard its the last remaining Victorian pavillion-style hospital building in the UK - the Dulwich Society tried to get it listed but English Heritage said too many changes had been made to the original building). Also like churches on Melbourne Grove, Barry Rd (as I turn into Landells Rd on the way home, the spire looks lovely) and church on Goose Green.

But in the last few months, > I'm finding that I can't park anywhere near my > house, if at all. And this isn't just during peak > times... I believe the problem has become worse over the last few years because: (1) More flats are being given planning permission without the council insisting on parking capacity. I live where any gaps between houses are filled in with flats and people have sold off parts of big gardens to build on. E.g.: - corner of Silvester and Barry Rd had what looks like two Victorian-style houses built but they are in fact split into flats - opposite to this, part of a garden was built on and looks like next door is also going to have something built - top of Whateley Rd had nice-looking flats built about 3 years ago but where do they all park? - old corner shop opposite me was split into flats about 4 years ago - a few houses down from me, 2 eco-houses are being built and they don't seem to have any parking provision because they are through a gate and there is not even room for off-street parking - more flats are being built on corner of Crystal Palace and Underhill - don't think parking has been provided ETC Etc - all the above are within 2 minutes walk of my house and so many examples demonstrate what a problem this is becoming. Every time a handful of more flats are being built (rather than a huge block), the council thinks parking isn't an issue but it quickly builds up into a problem. Developers should be forced to provide parking under the flats. (2) Some people who are moving into ED seem to have more money - must to be able to afford the high prices here. Wealthier families are able to afford multiple cars even if they could in reality make do with 1 car. (3) Planning permission seems to be readily given to split houses into flats - where will the multiple cars park? (4) Yes, LL is attracting more people. CPZ will only work if there aren't already too many residents' cars. The council needs to look into the problem first and the extent of each of the causes. It also needs to start considering parking when giving planning permission because the problem keeps getting worse.
  10. It would depend how wide the zone is. I live 5 minutes walk from the butchers (corner of Silvester and Landells) and I don't want people who can't park immediately off LL coming and clogging up my road. Might sound selfish, but the point I'm making is that the whole problem needs to be addressed rather than the council just pushing the problem elsewhere. Last week we couldn't park anywhere near our house to unpack our huge 6-weekly grocery shop (only do a big supermarket shop every 6 weeks). I sympathise with the problem. If any zone was introduced, the council would have to do a proper job (and personally I don't have much faith in the council due to past experiences). Mixulee - the area you live in (around Blackwater St, Melbourne Grove) has a large number of flats - both local authority flats and a number of the other houses are divided into flats from what I can see. The council should really do an audit of how many cars there are on particular roads - and how many spare spaces there really are after taking into account that residents do have visitors. Alot of the problem is caused be families having more than 1 car and also by houses being divided into flats. By the way Mixulee - I think if you can't park in front of your house, you are entitled to block the road for 2 minutes to unpack your shopping - others like the guy in the black SUV can wait!
  11. The man who made the lady pay sounds like a real bully. He should be ashamed of himself.

  13. DulwichMum - I agree, Brazilian workman are fab! We have a fig tree (that produces figs I have never done anything with), a grapevine, a couple of palms. My friend's sister lives in the monkey puzzle house on CP Rd - I'll ask if they know about the superstition. In Victorian times, the front of the house was a way to indicate to the world how prosperous you were. I've read that a monkey puzzle tree was considered to be indicative of being very wealthy.
  14. Hi Chuff I am back from my couple of days away and I have read the updated thread on what has been going on with your parking problems. As your neighbours have not come out waving a white flag yet, you can be an honourary 'neighbour' of Landells Rd (where I live) and that means you can be nosey about the eco-houses here! Its funny how neighboury relations go. It sounds like you have never been welcomed into the little clique on your road. I know my neighbours and talk to them and I know I am very lucky. These eco-houses - before a business was being run out of the site and I think the noise of business going-ons may have bothered some people. But when the construction work started, you would think the noise of building work would really have irritated people but the impact was lessened because the building people made a effort to pre-warn people and give an update after a few months. I live on the other side of the road and a few houses down, so it will be interesting to hear what the more immediate neighbours have made of it all.
  15. Hello Talisman What a lovely offer from you to allow people to have a look around! I was allowed to go through and see the buildings from the outside a couple of weeks ago, but as work was still in full flow me and hubby would love to see the interior and find out more about the eco-friendly things you have installed. When I met Bill and his family they were indeed very nice. I have never watched a whole episode of Grand Designs but I will tune in on 16 May! We have been watching the latest going-ons and saw some huge bamboos being delivered last week. Are any other forumers interested in looking around?
  16. Alas, I will not be able to attend as I will be away for a few days. It would have been good to meet you guys, especially as the CPT is within staggering distance of my house. PS I have given my gazebo donation to someone else to bring along. Hope you all have fun! Ko x
  17. Hurrah! I think everyone should drive to the forum drinks on Friday 13th, park their car on your road, cut through Milo Rd to get to the CPT, then get horribly drunk and have to leave their car there overnight and well into Saturday!
  18. I'm a bit baffled... 1 syllable (X Rd), middle letter is U?
  19. My first guess is 3 syllables (i.e. X-X-X Rd) and the middle letter is E. I'm not sure if I'm right now as your last clue has thrown me! This is a fun guessing game!
  20. Yes I can guess! Am I allowed to tell you my guess? If it is the road I am thinking then you live on a beautiful road!

If this is the first time any of your neighbours have bothered to talk to you, then that's really poor behaviour from them. Stand your ground!
  22. The food I have had at The Green has always been good and served hot. The service is, quite frankly, poor at times given the prices. The restaurant needs to be presented better and the staff need to be more attentive. When we arrived for a 7.30pm booking on a Friday night, they still had the cleaning materials out on top of the piano. They also got my starter wrong - how difficult is it to take an order down? They need to make more of an effort. The puddings are fab though.
  23. Hi Newsummer I've never heard of any problems in the few years I have lived here. People seem to get more animated on the subject of babies and buggies being everywhere in ED! I hope you enjoy ED and welcome!:)
  24. How terribly, terribly sad. :'(
  25. Polly - you can also buy fresh fish from Sea Cow - they just box it up for you. Not sure how it compares in price as I only buy fish occasionally from there.
