former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
peckhamboy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, it seems that works have started on Grove Vale and temporary traffic lights have been installed. As a result, and somewhat ironically given that the works are allegedly to improve pedestrian safety, the pedestrian crossing outside ED station is out of service with no replacement crossing point offered. Given that the nearest alternatives are the junction with Copleston Road or the Sainsburys crossroads, the result is that people using the station are obliged to take their chances crossing through the traffic. It seems to me that (setting aside the complete lack of consultation or information on the supposed improvements) this aspect shows an incredible lack of thought or planning. Could you please see if something can be done about providing temporary pedestrian crossing facilities close to the station? -
Probably depends when you're travelling, but I'd have thought heading to Blackheath then taking the A2 would be as quick as or quicker than any other route

Quite amazing. Derangedxzombie not only resuscitated a nearly 3 year old thread, but registered apparently for the sole purpose of doing so. That's some dedication for your first post.

Try the Castle on Crystal Palace Road. There's always lots of ladies there and you should be able to hook up no problem. -
parent and child spaces in sainsbury's car park
peckhamboy replied to dully's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't disagree with you there DJKQ. In fact, I've previously said on this thread that the cut-off age should be 5 rather than 12. It annoys me as much to see parents with a 12 year old parking there as it does people with no kids. I suspect you've never had to get a child out of a car seat though - the problem is that whilst the child is half the size of an adult (or generally much less unless you're a very small adult), they're in these huge seats with side impact protection and childsafe buckles, so it needs an adult to get in there to undo the buckles and lift the kid out. So in fact you need space for one and a half adults rather than half an adult. And with forward facing seats especially (ie kids of about one year plus), if the car door is not fully extended, it's amost impossible to get the child out. -

DJKillaQueen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > So my view is that if kids really are such a > burden that they require dorostop parking when > shopping...then don't take them. Aren't you missing the point here? (just by a couple of miles or so). Nobody seems to be saying "I have kids so I have to park next to the entrance". The point is that normal parking spaces are fairly narrow, meaning that getting kids (especially babies) in and out of the car is very difficult. I've had people park so close that I've had to scramble across from the passenger side just to get to the drivers seat - try doing that with a newborn in your arms! So Sainsburys provide extra wide spaces to help. These happen to be close to the entrance (but don't have to be). As a result, a significant number of selfish idiots decide that they will park there despite having no need of the wide space, simply because it will save them an extra 30 seconds walk. And you're having a go at the parents? -

Damian H - lighten up dude. And no need for the lecture on discrimination - I do happen to know a little about it. Incidentally, the law on marital status is that you can't discriminate against somebody on the grounds of their being married or in a civil partnership. Nothing to stop you discrimnating against singletons though, so you're fighting a losing battle there. Hope that helps. -

In the circumstances, QueenMab's description of the gentlemen concerned as "tossers" may be rather more literal than intended. -

Come on pearson, get with it. Sainsburys are discriminating against the able-bodied and those without children by providing dedicated spaces to the disabled and those with young children. Of course, amongst other things, Damian H is making an enormous and unjustifiable leap of logic by claiming that parking spaces for people with children is discriminatory on the grounds of marital status. I don't recall any signs saying that you can't park there if you're not married... But whilst we're at it. there's a dedicated space for electric cars too. Isn't that discriminatory against people with petrol cars? There's a lot of crap on this thread imo. Disabled people have their own spaces because they often need more room either side of the car to get themselves and wheelchairs in and out. It also makes sense to give them spaces near the entrance. People with young kids need more space either side of the car to get babies in and out (I think it's a bit ridiculous to extend the definition of young kids up to 12 though - frankly, once the kids are about 5 they should be more than capable of getting in and out with minimal help), and it also helps if you can get the pushchair down the side of the car rather than trying to get a small child into a pushchair in the 'road'. So I have no problem with spaces for those with young kids. Do they need to be right by the entrance? No. In fact they would be better slightly further away so that selfish ar5eholes don't feel the need to park in them. The point of the spaces ought to be extra width rather than proximity. -

and Goose Green, Elsie Road, Peckham Rye/East Dulwich Road, the Plough. About time too, given how reliant the area is on buses. -

Thanks James - I assume that would be the case but by the time I come back through in the evening there's not enough traffic to know if there's an issue or not! -

James Can anything be done about the phasing of the temporary lights on the corner of Champion Park and Grove Lane? Every morning there's a huge tailback northbound because the north/south phasing seems to be equal despite the volume of traffic being about ten times greater towards the city. This means that a huge queue of traffic builds up waiting for the lights to change whilst the southbound light is green for ages with no traffic coming through. Maybe if the lights can't be phased better, whichever company is digging up the road should have to manage the traffic flows manually? -
KK, thanks for the tip. Some of them are quite big but not in that league! Maybe a bedspread for a child's bed? I am sure the collection will have grown a little by the time I find a reliable furrier in any case so I may have enough by then. The forum is a source of valuable info on where to find fresh ones.
-
The problem is that it's getting rather difficult to get hold of a decent furrier nowadays, because they've all been driven out of business or can be contacted only through a network of shady men in pubs. I have about 20 cat furs in my shed that i'd like to turn into a bedspread, if anyone knows someone who could help.

Most famous person I've seen in ED so far....

Paul McGann - of course! Saw him out the other night and recognised him but couldn't put a name to the face. It was bugging me all night. Paul, if you're reading this, I think you may have left your umbrella in Sema Thai. -

Come on, the OP is just repeating what they were told by the police. I know everyone is very protective of the area, but don't shoot the messenger. -

?Best breast pump/ how to give 5 month old medicine
peckhamboy replied to Kalamiphile's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We had the same problem with our 6 month old, and never found a proper solution. The only reasonably successful method was to tag team it, with one holding her still with her head slightly tipped back and the other using the syringe. If you can get it in the cheek it helps a lot but it's easier said than done, when baby is clamping her mouth shut, shaking her head and sticking her tongue in the way! Good luck... -

They are actually > quite big shoes to fill - solid batsman, useful > 5th bowler and excellent fielder. Eoin Morgan looks a dead cert to come in as the batting replacement. He's a pretty useful fielder too and, as Colly himself pointed out, another ginger, so he's the perfect replacement. Supposedly Trott might be developed into a back-up medium pacer. He does bowl occasionally. And KP had pretty impressive bowling figures for this series...

Honestly, you lot don't know you're born. I can't believe you expect your husbands to go out to work every day earning the cash for your grande lattes and babycinos and then come home and do the cleaning, cooking, looking after the baby etc. Surely the least you can do after spending a lovely day frequenting coffee shops and buying tat from Oliver Bonas is make him a decent dinner, mop his tired brow and ensure he gets a proper night's sleep without disturbances from the children.

Don't see the appeal myself. I put my willy on a car last night but just got frostbite.
