Related article:- > > > http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-35519884 > > Foxy The article you mention is almost a year old and is the views of an ex bank chief (who has no influence today) saying that the ?50 note should be withdrawn. Yes the BOE has said they have no plans to introduce a plastic fifty but nowhere have I found evidence that they are going to withdraw the current note, therefore your post appears to be based on speculation rather than fact. ?50 notes are useful, I often pay people in cash (for legitimate reasons) and say ?3,000 in cash is either 60 fifties, 150 twenties or 300 tens... It makes it a no brainer to carry a smaller (in volume) bundle of notes rather than what feels like a carrier bag full of smaller notes. Foxy happy scaremongering (sorry Christmas)

Restaurant asking for date of birth on online booking form
TheArtfulDogger replied to tomskip's topic in The Lounge
Maybe it's a simple case of marketing and being able to email you a birthday offer (I.e. Free glass of wine on your birthday...) Of course I could be simplistic in my thinking -

Most scratches are visible to the eye (depending on your eyes and age of course) If they are dirty or dusty they can be cleaned (rat records in camberwell has a machine) How have you stored them, upright or fiat (upright stops warping as flat puts weight on them) What have you got as I love the warmth of vinyl

Another ill-thought out council plan....
TheArtfulDogger replied to Rockets's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Glad to see the council and their contractors have seen sense and moved the works to a quieter time on the road network as it would affect not just the school runners but commuters too. I did love the irony of a mum I spoke to once when she said that "she drives her kids to school because the amount of traffic on the road at school run time made it dangerous for them to walk" -
Assination attempt on trump Crystal palace road police station development found to have major flaws, resulting in redevelopment and closure of the pavement for another year France votes out of the EU Shock defeat for Merkal Elvis' death proved to be fake as he performs a comeback tour with the stones X factor taken off air due to dismal Christmas song performance The film barbarella remade with Jordon in the lead role , sadly a big flop despite the huge upfront support Driverless cars result in multiple road accidents, stalling development

Does that mean a fairy light will die as a result?

In the 3rd planet of the apes film (where did you get battle of the apes ? ) the plot centre around three apes coming back in time from when apes rule the planet to 1973 and one of the apes is pregnant At the end of the film milo (the infant ape who in later films is called Caesar) is swapped with a circus apes infant and is seen as asking for mama through the bars of the circus cage, hence the introduction of the first talking ape into the mix. A bit of a paradox as the first talking ape in the linage came from the last talking ape (at the end of the second film the apes discovered a nuclear device that blows up the planet just as the three apes escape back in time...) The origional film follows on from the premise that mankind had been reduced to a small population after a nuclear war which allowed the talking apes to take over Therefore you only need to worry that apes will take over if A) time travel is proven to exist B) the paradox of the first talking ape is resolved C) cats and dogs are wiped out D) apes are used as domestic help / pets E) we have a nuclear war. Okay E is likely with Trump on the nuclear button I guess however the message is "don't panic and Simian on" Yours Artful the science fiction nerd

I'm sure it's not just me but I am convinced this year that the advertising for Christmas is way in Excess of last year. I do find that it has commercialised Christmas, and I am aware it's been happening forever, but are we in danger of forgetting the message of Christmas (peace and goodwill to all) in our mad consumer rush to buy everything that no one actually wants, stock our fridges and freezers with enough food and drink to feed a small island (what obesity crisis?) and then be expected to be jolly throughout the festive period all the while knowing that we will be paying for it for the next 11 months ! I am already feeling ill looking at all the "party food" advertised (all with enough additives and preservatives in them to ensure you will never rot after you die) and the insane concept that we need to get a new party outfit for the season (heads up wear something you wore two years ago, no one will remember unless they have a photographic memory or you have eaten too much party food already) On top of that there are sports TV packages being sold as the perfect festive upgrade, then there is the rush for the X factor number one single... it all seems too much for what is essentially a religious festival that has been superimposed on a pegan ritual. I am seriously thinking of starting a grass roots movement to decommercialise christmas, and please don't get me wrong it's not a bah humbug movement, I still enjoy giving and receiving small token presents (at my age there is very little I want or need), having good friends or family around for a relaxing meal on Christmas Day (note the use of the word meal and not excessive feast) and remembering those who can't be with us at this time of year I was thinking of also calling this grass roots movement " keep Christmas uncomplicated " but that may need working on. Please please please let me know I'm not alone in feeling like this, but if I am then I will shut up, gorge myself to death on a seven bird roast and never mention it again (well not before next Christmas that is)

Whilst manufacturers are building the technology in the simple question still remains in my mind "Do people actually want driverless cars? "
-
Will there be enough people who want to give up feeling in control of their car to actually want to own / use a driverless car ? I like driving and enjoy feeling in control of the vehicle, making decisions including things like what gear to select to get the right performance out of the car (not always the best performance fuel / economy wise I hasten to add) Having visited places like India, driverless card won't work there for a very long time due to the quality of the roads post monsoon where sections are damaged by the rains. Equally with the sheer number of vehicles on the road there if they change over gradually then the driverless car would not handle the Indian style of driving where road rules aren't observed , the shortest route is not necessarily the correct one and how will the driverless car alert non driverless vehicles to their presence as Indian drivers overtake warning the drivers around them of the act with their horn ? Would be interesting to see but as I said do people really want to use them as technology is heading that way but no one has actually asked if people want it !

Self checkouts at the supermarket, it's not hassle free and slower than a normal checkout along with the soulless experience half the items failed when scanning... Shan't be doing that again anytime soon, especially as chatting to it like it was a real person got me loads of funny looks (apparently they have done nothing recently and plan to do nothing but work this weekend!) -
East Dulwich Hotel - any info on what's happening?
TheArtfulDogger replied to Jo31's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
According to the planning portal the council have granted planning permission. I was interested to read the officer report ( http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk/documents/?GetDocument=%7b%7b%7b!WiD9VPRzOu0XdtcuyOW42g%3d%3d!%7d%7d%7d ) especially around the area of car parking as quoted "Car parking The proposal does not provide off-street car parking spaces and the proposal site does not provide opportunities for off-street parking that could be realised whilst maintaining an acceptable design for the proposal. The site is not located within a controlled parking zone and, as such, the location is not considered to be under parking stress. Future occupants may park on-street, as is the case for the current hotel use. It should be noted that hotels typically exert greater pressure on parking to that of residential uses as they are visited by guests and staff. This is particularly the case when not located in town centres or areas with good public transport accessibility as fewer visits will be made by public transport. For this reason the proposal is unlikely to cause additional pressure on parking in the local area to that caused by the current use. It is acceptable for the proposal to rely on on-street parking." I have to question if the officer ever visited the site as it was more of a temporary accommodation hostal than a hotel and as such there was only the occasional use of parking, rather than exerting pressure on parking. In my honest opinion 4 new houses will more than likely attract families with at least one car each where as now I suspect there is only one car (max) amongst th residents and staff. Also the summary of consultation responses seemed in my mind to over simplify the individual comments made. Oh well, guess it's a done deal now, let's hope the builders are more responsible than the ones doing the old police station down the road... -
Oh lovely d'ling Bondage and horses, ed really is getting more upper class by the day 🤔
