  1. If you are able to find a flaw in my arithmetical reasoning as to the percentage of East Dulwich residents who are against the CPZ, I will be happy to change my opinion. However, in the meantime, I think you?re just trying to obscure the fact that the anti CPZ posters contain emotive misleading statements. Like the OP, I have no agenda but am against the use of misleading statistics. BTW where were all these second hand pram shops you keep referring to? I can only remember one at the Goose Green end of Lordship Lane!
  2. This thread is about the accuracy or otherwise of the anti CPZ posters that have appeared, analysis of Southwark?s methodology is for other threads.
  3. ?My agenda is clear - I?m against anonymous posters using misleading stats. It would be more accurate to say ?8000 ED residents signed our petition against the CPZ?.? Actually it wouldn?t as it emerged on another thread that half of those who signed the petition were visitors to the area. /forum/read.php?5,2009737,2010055#msg-2010055
  4. 37% responded to the consultation of which 69% were against the CPZ so to find the percentage of those living in ED who are against the CPZ it is necessary to find 69% of 37%. This comes to roughly 25%, a figure at great variance to the '69% of ED residents voted against a CPZ' quoted in the poster.
  5. ?The obvious question remaining WHAT does council tax actually cover, if we're eventually paying additionally for schools, street cleaning, police, parks maintenance, council wages, hospitals, etc.? Has there been any suggestion that these things will incur charges in addition to what is already paid through Council Tax?
  6. Of course it?s speculation, as the possibility of the LibDems achieving a majority in Southwark Council which would enable them to bring in such measures is purely hypothetical, it can?t be anything else and whether I?m correct with my thesis will never be put to the test. A lot of conversation and what you read on the internet is a mixture of fact, opinion, speculation, wishful thinking and downright misinformation. And let?s not forget electioneering.
  7. My cellar flooded a couple of years ago and wisdom on the internet said to check drainage which did indeed prove to be the problem. The drainage system in many of the Victorian terraces in East Dulwich pairs two adjoining houses and my neighbour?s cellar was also flooded. As the main drain is shared, it is Thames Water?s responsibility to clear any blockage which they sorted in a matter of hours and the water disappeared. I was very impressed with the guys enthusiasm for their job. So perhaps your neighbour had a blockage which they cleared or maybe there was a blockage outside under the road which TW cleared? Either way, count yourself lucky it cleared spontaneously - I was just hoping my flood would just go away!
  8. The LibDems however have never been in overall control of Southwark Council, the closest was during the years 2002 to 2010 when they held nearly the same amount of seats as Labour. This was of course before the severe cuts to local government funding by central government so he/LibDems was not in a position to propose such a charge (a charge not a tax). I think in the present climate that if there was a LibDem Southwark Council it would be highly likely they would introduce charges for brown bin collection no matter what James B says. Ah, but he?s a politician, promises the world to get elected.
  9. The pharmacy will also sometimes ask you to complete a questionnaire when collecting prescriptions. What they don?t make clear is that this is part of a Medication Usage Review for which they receive a fee from the NHS.
  10. The government cuts are forcing even the most Labour of councils to behave like Tories.
  11. It was not a public vote, nor a referendum, it was a consultation.
  12. Come off it, this isn?t even a back of a fag packet exercise but more of a hunch influenced by wishful thinking!

Currently it?s paid for with revenue raised from Council Tax but the council does not have a statutory duty to provide the service from revenue raised in this way hence they are able to introduce charges.
  14. Yes it is currently a free service but not a statutory service that has to be provided and we?ve been fortunate it has been free for so long as a large proportion of other councils have been charging for it for some time and at a much higher rate. As has been said time and time again, funding from central government has been slashed over the last 10 years: other than introducing ?stealth? taxes do you have any suggestions how the council can raise revenue for much needed services throughout the borough, services that you and I possibly do not use but many people less fortunate are very dependent upon?
  15. Goodness gracious, all this anger and wasted energy over ?2.50 a month. And before someone remarks it?s difficult for those on a low income, I?m on a low income and I don?t see it as a problem. As for how many trucks, I suspect there will be the same number of trucks as there are now and food waste, garden waste and brown bags will all go in the same truck. Whether collection is paid for or not does not impact how it?s collected or how it ends up, they?re separate issues.

Thanks for clarification, thought it was too good to be true! Seems like there will be engineering works next weekend as according to Network Rail it?s possible to get there directly then but the weekend after it goes back to 2 changes. Oh well.
  17. I discovered today though maybe it?s something everybody knows that it?s possible to get a direct train from East Dulwich to Box Hill at weekends.
  18. Very sad to learn that. Nature can be a real b*stard sometimes.
  19. When did dismissing something as ?just a money making scheme? become a reason for it not to be valid?

The Manzes in Tower Bridge Road is even older. It opened in in 1892 and is thought to be the oldest surviving pie and mash shop

One person?s ?bit of fun? is often at the expense of other people. ?Can?t you take a joke?? ETA. Besides, half the fun of April Fool?s jokes is to try and spot them and call the originator out.

  23. You haven?t mentioned any distraction techniques - are you able to clarify?
  24. Very colourful with mysterious numbers - almost an art installation
