Increase in thefts around East Dulwich
nxjen replied to kbabes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well done. This has to be one of the most mean spirited posts I've ever seen on the EDF. -

Perhaps it might be a good idea to see if any East Dulwich residents would like to be involved on an East Dulwich Steering Committee of the Dulwich Society? To potentially only involve businesses leads to a lop sided emphasis on what East Dulwich may or may not need/want. For example, the recent proposal, which I really hope has been dropped, for banners hanging from lamp-posts which may benefit businesses but as far as I recall was a not popular proposal with residents. The demise of the old East Dulwich Society seems to have happened without much open discussion, the integration into the Dulwich Society appears to have been a done deal long before it was announced rather than give any opportunity for residents to become involved in reviving the Society. As far as I recall there was one rather downbeat, negative post on the EDF about two or three years ago saying the ED Society had run down without any real effort to try and attract newer, younger blood, which I'm sure East Dulwich must be teeming with. As I said before, the history and character of East Dulwich is totally different from Dulwich Village, in addition East Dulwich is not subject to the overwhelming presence of the Dulwich Estate.

I had the same experience with Saga, incredibly cheap when I first took it out but gradually crept up to an enormous amount. Last time it was due I bit the bullet and shopped around and got a much much better deal. Suspect I will have to do the same again in a couple of years. Same thing happened with buildings insurance as well, not with Saga, so again changed provider.

I hope so, then I can go back to being a council official (Note to ssw: joke) -
I would feel very uneasy if the government, local or central, were to set up sites for donating. It would attract criticism that they were absolving themselves of financial responsibility - and both central and local government seem to have a lot to answer for here - and might be viewed as a voluntary tax. For those who wish to avoid the JustGiving commission, the British Red Cross has set up a London Fire Fund http://www.redcross.org.uk I can't stop thinking about the victims, beyond words.

Then this could clearly > be made suitable for all religions. Surely we can > all unite behind that? I suggested many months ago this may be in Southwark's thinking, especially as in their Cemetery Strategy of 2011 they state at 6.2.1 "Muslim Burial: expansion of existing site (within Nunhead) on previously topped up ground, and provision elsewhere in new layouts." Most people could unite behind your suggestion, probably 99% or more of people, but ssw have this peculiar contradictory position of wanting all burials to cease within Southwark and yet complaining Southwark discriminate against Muslim burials. They're campaigning for one outcome that is at odds with another of their aims. -

The book isn't shown on Southwark Libraries catalogue and the link you included shows the book currently to be out of print but as an observation only, and probably a very superficial observation at that, India has a long tradition of assimilating other cultural influences to create something uniquely Indian. -

Blanche Cameron Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Where is your petition calling for cutting down > trees and digging up the dead so Southwark can > keep burying people? > A petition in support of a government/local government proposal? How very novel! You point to the amount of signatures on your petition as support for your campaign but until you present your petition to LB Southwark your claims are meaningless. Upon presentation, it can be verified how many of the signatures are from those - who live in Southwark - who live elsewhere in London - who live elsewhere in the UK - who live somewhere else on the planet. Even if the majority of the 11,000 signatures you claim to have are from residents of Southwark, which I suspect is most unlikely, the population of Southwark is just under a quarter of a million and the signatures would represent a very small proportion. And how many who signed were actually aware of all the facts, not the least that there is no such place as Southwark Woods? -
Have you tried the vet practices - Lordship Lane Vets and the new one by the Co-op?

"Burying local people locally is more important to you than nature and history and heritage." I don't know who this is aimed at but speaking as someone who has a keen, genuine interest in history and heritage I am proud to say that yes, the needs of the living during the difficult process of bereavement are more important in my priorities than history, endlessly fascinating though it is. Living in an area that has many, many green spaces which I frequently visit, some within only 10 minutes walk of the small area you are trying to protect, the needs of the living have greater priority than nature in COC which, in any case, will be enhanced with the proposed renovation. Anybody who places nature, history and heritage above the needs of the living and a very human need has to have a very strange outlook on life. As for the rest of your post, it's just a few random, unsubstantiated sentences and I can't be ar*ed to respond. -

A lot of commentators are saying it is to a large extent the newly registered younger voters who are responsible for the high labour vote. Would these younger voters have been inspired to vote for a more moderate Labour Party?

I'm feeling disproportionately happy at the results but will this mean another Con/LibDem coalition which will give a working majority to whoever is the Tory PM?

"There should be proper investigation of what exists in a cemetery and where ..." Just looking at Nunhead and West Norwood as examples, this is something Friends' Groups generally undertake. -

Has to be a wind-up?? As has been stated many times, when the land was bought by the Burial Board of St Giles' Vestry it was meadowland that had never been built upon. The most an archaeological survey will find is the odd clay pipe or perhaps a coin. There is no lost city of Underhillium lying underneath. I should also be very interested to learn how an archaeological survey can be undertaken without disturbing the remains of the thousands buried there which ssw profess should be allowed to rest in peace. -
Goodness me, a post from Lordship 516 I could understand.

See Daily Telegraph 10 March 2017 that reports on Diocese's faculty judgment. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/10/war-graves-lost-court-gives-council-permission-bury-civilians/ This article reports that LB Southwark and the CWGC were already in dialogue and had already reached agreement in principle regarding the way forward. It goes on to say "Blanche Cameron, chair of Friends of Camberwell Cemetery, said that the group did not know about the war graves until the Church's judgement came out". And still they claim to have "raised the alarm" -
