  2. Hi Cora, the Southwark and Lewisham admissions systems are a little different. Lewisham has some LA run secondaries, all of Southwark's are either academies or voluntary aided (faith). Lewisham therefore has a banding test sat by it's pupils in year 6 for several secondary schools. It therefore can publish the outcome in terms of bands for this. Some other schools (eg the Aske's Federation ones) have separate tests, but however have made their banding results freely available, so therefore, these could be integrated into the Lewisham booklet. Southwark used to have a Southwark banding test, which Southwark year 6 pupils sat. This was abandoned about 5 years ago as more and more of the Southwark (non-LA) secondary schools wanted to run their own banding tests (so it now means that if you apply to several Southwark schools, you child may need to sit several non-verbal reasoning tests in November/December). This is also why in the letters to Lewisham parents, the information on your distance in relation to the last place offered distance can be given. Renata
  3. Overtherainbow, The above stats posted by helenholden are not for Southwark. Every on-time Southwark primary applicant was offered a place at a primary school. The form that the expansion at Ivydale will take is being driven by Helen Ingham the Head and the governing body of the school. Helen, Cllr Fiona Colley, a council officer and I had a very positive meeting where the expansion was discussed. Southwark do have a forward plan for primary places it's here, on page 30 of the document: http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/b6671/Supplemental%20Agenda%20No.%201%20Tuesday%2016-Jul-2013%2016.00%20Cabinet.pdf?T=9 Renata
  4. Hi reren, I would suggest you go to the open days particularly as it's your local school. In theory, your son could get a place in the school nursery in January. It all depends if they have any places available then (eg children who've deferred a term moving to reception). There are some pre-schools eg St Mary's Preschool in Nunhead and Chelwood in Brockley that may have places available if one doesn't come up in a school nursery. Renata
  5. Hi Jade, this year applications were made directly to the school and 2014 will therefore be the first year of entry via the CAF scheme. Therefore, it's difficult to estimate the last place offered distance. The distance will be measured from the site (Pepys Rd) in an as the crow flies fashion. Children who attend the primary will have direct feed into Haberdashers Aske's Hatcham Secondary. The school is I believe, bilingual English/German. If you are moving into the Nunhead/Telegraph Hill area; the schools that may be close to you are Rye Oak, Hollydale, Ivydale and John Donne in Southwark and HA, Edmund Waller, John Stanier and Turnham in Lewisham (depending on where you move to). Renata
  6. Hi Cazz, please email me, and I will get this sorted ASAP. Renata
  7. Hi all, just to say I had a very good meeting with Nunhead Councillor Fiona Colley (the Ivydale expansion involves two wards, Peckham Rye and Nunhead), a council officer and the Head of Ivydale, Helen Ingham yesterday. Its looking very exciting, Helen has some great ideas, but its all in early stages at the moment. Renata
  8. 80% of Southwark?s Primary schools have been judged by Ofsted to be good or outstanding, which is in the top quartile of performance nationally; so our schools are doing very well! When I speak to residents, they are happy with our local schools. The greatest concern of parents is being able to secure a place in one of the local primaries for next year or 2015. Prior to the 2013 start of term, I already have had one meeting to discuss 2014 entry, because I want to give the best possible help and advice to residents. My advice to the parents who contact me is to look at the Southwark Starting Primary brochure http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200172/school_admissions and check the distances of the last place offered of the local schools (but remembering that this varies) and to visit schools including the less popular ones. Finally, to put down six schools in order of preference on the CAF form. I have helped many parents on a one-to-one basis. Southwark was able through careful pupil planning to offer every applicant who applied on time a place in a Southwark primary school this year. As an Local Authority we are doing everything possible to deliver on school places; however we need funds to provide these, there is not enough money going directly to LAs to expand our popular and successful schools. All the temporary and permanent expansions are done following detailed site assessments and in conjunction with Head Teachers and Governors in order to ensure they are not done to the detriment of pupils. The Conservative /LibDem Government's flagship Free School program is supposed to be one vehicle of achieving extra pupil places; at what cost, however, to our children. One of the Free Schools in the Borough has its second year of intake into a TRA (Tenant & Resident Association) Hall on a Southwark estate. There is no mechanism to prevent Free Schools opening in unsuitable temporary accommodation. I am concerned about the Harris Free School planned for the East Dulwich area for 2014. They have received DFE approval, so will get funding, but where will they go? Where will their site be (Dulwich Hospital keeps being mentioned, but not LA or Harris owned), ready for an intake in a years? time in a residential area? As I have mentioned above in this thread, I am also concerned about the plans for another Harris Primary to be set up on the Harris Girl?s Site in 2015. Like the Boys ?school this is a 150 pupil intake secondary. Harris Academy@Peckham reduced its intake by one form of entry when the primary was built on site. My most major concern over this, is, whether building a whole new primary school on this site, would be at detriment to the current school and its pupils, current and future. If a school was built here, would Harris Primary, Boys and Girls schools form a through 4-18 Academy with automatic entry to secondary, if so what impact would this have on other residents in the area? This proposal does lead me to ask many questions; hence I am meeting with the Head, Jane Fletcher next week to discuss this. Later today, I have a meeting scheduled with Helen Ingham, the Head of Ivydale about the Ivydale expansion onto the Stuart Road Site. If residents wish to read in more detail about the Council?s primary school place strategy over the next few years, a link to the Cabinet report on the Southwark website is here:http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/b6671/Supplemental%20Agenda%20No.%201%20Tuesday%2016-Jul-2013%2016.00%20Cabinet.pdf?T=9 From 2016 onwards (current year 4s) there will be increased pressure on secondary places in the Borough. I have had a couple of discussions with Council Officers over this and there are plans for increasing Secondary places in the Borough to address the forecasted place shortfalls. In my opinion, even more challenging than primary, not only increased classroom numbers and teachers, but secondary pupils need more specialist facilities such as science labs etcetera and whole new schools need much more space than a primary site. I am a Peckham Rye Ward Councillor, but I?m happy to help any local resident through the school application process. Renata edited to sort out links!
  9. Hi Unlurked, actually I was on holiday and had limited internet access! To verify what SkyofFire states, there will be speed checks in the next couple of days, with a particular focus on late night as this is when residents felt there was an issue with spending. Residents also raised alternative routes with TFL. If I can I shall come along too, Renata
  10. How odd, James. I was told by council officers that in discussions with Harris, they had been informed by Harris that there was insufficient space on the Harris Girls' School site to put a primary school there. This is also going to be very close to the expansion of Ivydale onto the Former Bredinghurst site, on Stuart Rd they would be only around 200m apart! Also, this is the first year that Harris Boys' school has been 11-16. I wonder if the Sixth Form Centre, with all the new regs on staying in education or training moving towards age 18, will this have capacity for the bulk of children coming through Harris Boy's and Girl's school? The Girls' school does have some outside space for outdoor sports, but as Harris Girls' is a specialist Sports Academy this should be used for Sports so I sincerely hope they have not got plans to built on the Harris Girls' outside sports area. Any Harris Girls' parents out there, have you been consulted on this? Renata
  11. Hi JT76, I'm posting here rather than responding to the pm as there may be other residents from your street wondering the same thing. I don't why at the moment (also Keston Rd is in Lane Ward); but I have put in an enquiry to the tree section and will post their response here. Renata
  12. Thanks for posting the meeting details SkyofFire. I shall be there too. Renata
  13. Hi OD, I've asked council officers to update me if the 63 will going to Brockley Rise for the duration of the works. Renata

  15. The ward Councillors have made some suggested time to meet up with TFL and Harriet on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday this week. Depending on the consensus time and day, it may be that only one Councillor can make it (eg I am chairing a meeting on Wednesday evening so couldn't make the meeting if it's then), but we have suggested times where at least one of us will be there. Hi Nunhead Belle, TFL won't spilt routes into large bus/little bus as it is uneconomical for them (this has come up in conversation previously with residents and TFL over the 343 route). I have received some emails outside of the forum by residents who use the 63 and are concerned that TFL may terminate buses at Peckham Rye. Their concerns have been capacity on the 363 and worries that TFL would then make this a permanent route extension. Buses were supposed to be driving at 15MPH on the diversion route and night buses should have been on here as the N63 goes to Crystal Palace. I am appalled to see that a bus crashed into a car while on the diversion section. While I was away, Councillor Mills had beat me to it to suggest extending to Brockley Rise. TFL flatly refused at the time. I will post on here once we have conformation of the meeting time/day. Renata
  16. It was a great event, well organised and it was good to see local residents enjoying the music and late summer sunshine! Renata
  17. Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Gavin and I had a meeting with over 50 of the dog owning users of Peckham Rye Park on Saturday. There was helpful discussion and dialogue at this meeting. I would firstly like to point out that the blanket dogs on lead signs that appeared a few years ago and that were removed following protest by residents were not under the current administration (it was well before my time as a councillor). The reason this survey came about is due to the death of pet dogs following attacks by out of control dogs on Peckham Rye, Nunhead Cemetery and other parks/open spaces in the Borough (also a pet cat in Nunhead Cemetery) in the last year or so. Also, there is the issue of dog mess not being picked up by a minority of dog owners (as well as costly to remove, yukky to step into, it's also a health hazard). I do agree the survey could be better structured/worded. Barrie said that this survey was not done with any ideas of changes to what there is currently in mind, he also said that it is highly unlikely there would be any changes to Peckham Rye Park. The vast majority of dog owners using the park do so in a responsible manner. It's that very small minority who don't clear up after their dog or let their dog roam out of control in a dangerous fashion etc that need to be dealt with. There have been other surveys, eg libraries, where it was apparent that residents were concerned that some libraries would close when the survey outcome led to all remaining open and some of the smaller libraries now are open more days in the week than prior to the survey. Surveys are there to engage with residents and find out their opinion. I do therefore hope that residents fill in the survey, even if it's purely to say, for example: we use Peckham Rye Park and we are happy with it as it is. In terms of litter left by groups using the park. This has been reported to me before and I have passed on the complaint. If there is a day/time/place where you observe a regular user eg a sports team that leaves their rubbish behind, let me know and I will report it. Renata
  18. James, I find your comments bizarre. Sonia and the governing body at Dulwich Hamlet Junior are working in partnership with Southwark to provide a new school for local residents at the old Bellenden School site. It would not be useful for anyone if this thread dissolves into a political brawl. Kitty, I have had confirmation from the Head that it is planned that the school would open with reception only and fill up year by year on a bottom up basis. Renata
  19. To add to above, shoes with Velcro (labelled too as several children may have the same school shoes albeit in different sizes, as I once discovered!)rather than laces and practice getting changed from uniform to PE kit and back again one or twice if you have the chance. Don't send in with a coat while it's warm and sunny as they will probably forget it/loose it and label any jumper/cardigan as it will be removed and accidentally swapped with those of their peers! I'd agree re a snack and the tiredness seems to be child dependant. Renata
  20. Hi Kitty, I have contacted the Head to ask her about this. I have also suggested she contacts the Lane ward Councillors as they would be able to publicise it amongst their ward residents in the vicinity of the school. Renata
  21. The reasons for the lights being replaced were down to TFL and not Southwark. The lights did not conform to TFLs current standard. There was extensive consultation over whether the lights, that were initially temporary should stay or go. Residents voted that they should stay. The consultation was in spring 2012. I have reported that the lights are not working properly. Renata
  22. I have had some emails about this as well as the posts on here. We are trying to sort out a date/time for Harriet, us, the ward councillors, and Cabinet Member, Barrie Hargrove to meet up with residents to discuss this. Renata
  23. Hi all, I will report/find out about these lights and if it's a triggering issue or if they have failed. Hi Matt, I have looked into this before, this is the TFL standard for pedestrian crossing at traffic lights. The green man and beeps do go off before you have crossed, but the red light still remains red, the idea behind this is that people theoretically don't start to cross at the end of the pedestrian phase. Renata
  24. I have a suggestion, a bit of a merged version of suggestions above and the correspondence I've received. What do residents think of alternating 63s to Peckham Rye and Brockley Rise (where the P12s terminate) for the 3 month period. I don't think terminating all the 63s at Peckham Rye would work as there would be capacity issues on the 363 and P12 (both get busy at peak times) and this would be a way to test the demand for a 63 extension and shouldn't cost more than current service if 50% of the 63s are extended and 50% and truncated. (I have no idea if TFL would agree to this, it's just an idea). Looking in my diary the earliest I could meet with residents is lunchtime on Thursday, would this work for any of you? Renata
