Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
Renata Hamvas replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Langbourne has a new Head who is bringing in many changes and is about to have major investment in its buildings and equipment etc. Also, you can get there if you live close to the 363 bus route. Renata -
Hi Maria, Sorry that you have received a ticket. I have checked the regulations surrounding Strakers Road with Council Officers. This is a normal highway, just like any other road and therefore it was a contravention for you to have parked with your wheels up on the pavement. I would suggest in future parking elsewhere and walking to the park. I have asked about notices, this is being looked into. But it would not be standard to put such notices up. Renata

Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
Renata Hamvas replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
akc74, this is a grant maintained schools, you would need to contact the school directly. if any of you are wondering why Goose Green is missing from the allocations table, it is now an Academy and therefore you need the school for information. Renata Thanks Number2! -
Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
Renata Hamvas replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi all, LAs do exchange information. Waiting lists are maintained using the same admissions criteria as those used to make the original allocations. You can move down a list if people move into the area closer to the school than your home, or, if an older sibling gets a place at a school and then the younger one will be waitlisted under sibling criteria or if a child is assessed to have a relevant social or medical need (eg recently diagnosed as autistic and a particular school has an autism unit). There tends to be more movement on the waiting lists of larger schools. There tends to be a bit of movement (up and down) over the summer holidays as families with children often move home then. it is not unusual for one or two children not to turn up in September (eg gone private or moved and not informed the LA). It has to be verified if the child is definitely not coming (eg parents haven't deferred the place until January) before such places are reallocated. If someone gets offered eg their 1st choice place from a waiting list, and accepts they immediately are removed from the waiting lists of the other schools they have applied to. Then everyone moves up one place on those waiting lists. Renata -
August baby. School age cut off date advice needed
Renata Hamvas replied to dirty tree's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi dirty tree, you would need to apply by the mid-January deadline. Once offered the place you could choose to defer it, but your child would need to join her class in the summer term or you would lose the place you are holding. You can't defer until September as this would be the new academic year and your child would lose their place. Reception is designed to be a link between nursery and key stage 1 (years 1 and 2). Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013

The updated numbers of people who didn't get one of their choices would now include late applicants. Ticket2ride,the oversubscribed schools you mention are all LA Community schools. Renata -
Lyndhurst School Catchment
Renata Hamvas replied to kittysailing's topic in The Family Room Discussion
It was 498m. 30 of the 60 places went to siblings. All Southwark community primaries measure distances as the crow flies, so distances measured on foot are much larger. You could use something like freemaptools, which gives you postcode to postcode as the crow flies distances (you need to have it set to Km). This wil give you an approximate idea as to how far you are from a school. Renata -
Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
Renata Hamvas replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
In terms of building a new school you need a location. The reason why Southwark Free school was not set up in SE1 was because a location couldn't be found in the Borough area, so they are currently using the Ledbury Tenants and Residents Hall for the school (SE15). They are hoping to relocate at some point to Rotherhithe (SE16). In order for Judith Kerr to divulge where they will be based, they need to have found and finalised a site. Yes there are two Harris Primary's in Peckham one was an existing school that became an Academy (Peckham Park) ie not a new Free School. The other one, was created on the site of Academy@Peckham, an existing Harris Secondary. Harris have said that their two secondary schools in ED are too small to accommodate a primary. The other Free school that has been discussed on here, Haberdasher's Aske Free School is also on the site of an existing Secondary. The issue of ED is actually finding a site to put a school. This is probably why Judith Kerr has focused on Herne Hill rather than East Dulwich. It's not easy to find a solution to this, the areas which have the greatest difficulty with primary school places tend to be close to a park or a cemetery. There are no empty school buildings that can easily be brought back into use either. |The only one I knew of in the area was St Thomas More Hall (former St Anthony's School Site) this was investigated but unfortunately is too small even for a one form entry primary. There are currently sufficient primary school places in Southwark, but unfortunately it's the location of the places which is the issue. Hi Gina, by offering you Langbourne, Southwark has fulfilled their obligation. Yes, you still remain on the waiting list of the schools you applied to. I hope you have now put your name down on the lists for other primary schools too (if not please do so urgently!). In September the lists will move from the LA to the schools, so you'll need to contact the schools then. When is your daughter's birthday. She needs to start school/home schooling by the start of the term after she turns 5. The other thing to investigate is whether any other children living close to you are going to Langbourne and whether they could take your daughter there. Renata -
Nursery admissions are run independently to reception. Each primary has their own nursery admissions policy. Some do prioritise siblings, some do not and eg go on age or distance. You would need to check with the school. As not all parents send their child to nursery at a school (eg if they are working and full-time care) it can often be easier to get a nursery than reception place, so children in then nursery don't get a reception place at the school (I know not relevant to you in this case Verds). Undersubscribed schools are ones that don't give a last place offered in the community school table (available for 2013 on the other thread). It is worth looking at this as you may find a school, whilst not as close as others to your home, is a good school and may be convenient eg get to work from. An example of this may be, if you take the Capital Connect or Victoria Trains to work, Hollydale Primary is close to Nunhead station and has an after school club. Renata

Hi J-mo, (& Londonmix)the bulges for 2014 won't be decided yet. All schools have been surveyed for temporary and potential for permanent expansion. Usually the year's bulges are finalised towards the end of the year, so watch this space. Dulwich B&B- It happens quite frequently that children in a nursery do not get a place in the primary part of the school. Hi Jon, with regard to Therapia, children from that there have in the past few years have gone to Goodrich, Ivydale, Fairlawn, Horniman and St Francesca Cabrini. It seems that increasingly they are going to St Francesca Cabrini. This is a Catholic school (on Forest Hill Road), it does take non-Catholic children, several per year in the last few years (since St Antony's, the St Thomas More Parish School expanded to 2 forms). The allocation for non-Catholics is on distance. Renata

High number on waiting list and still got in?
Renata Hamvas replied to ABirney's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Waiting lists are administered by schools from September onwards. Kamath, please apply for as many other schools near you. You child will need to start school the term after their 5th birthday. You don't apply for a year 1 place, after September, it's effectively an in year application for reception. Anna, you will stay on the waiting list for the schools you applied to. I agree with you, moving 40 places up a waiting list is unlikely. Renata -
Haberdasher Aske's music test
Renata Hamvas replied to lightweight's topic in The Family Room Discussion
hi Lightweight, it is very competitive to get through the Aske's music test. The level of competition has probably increased as the part 1 and part 2 tests and results being issued before the closing date for CAF forms. It means if your child passes part 1 and is highly ranked in part 2, you know that they will be offered a music place. I do know of a child with no music training whatsoever who got in (passed part one, and high ranked in part 2 by singing). The advantage of this is that if your son doesn't pass part 1, and you live too far away, that it's not worth using up a place on the CAF form for Aske's. I think there was some helpful stuff on Mumsnet a while back, so it may be worth searching for this. Renata -
Travelling / year out with kids
Renata Hamvas replied to little h's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Depending on when your child's birth is, if their birthday is January or later, you could defer the school place until Summer term (ie April 2014). Renata -
Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
Renata Hamvas replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi, I see you are in Lewisham Abney, it would be worth calling Lewisham and seeing what schools you could go onto the waiting list for. Depending on where you are, also contact Haberdasher's Aske about their free school waiting list?. -
Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
Renata Hamvas replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Abney, have you added your child's name to other waiting lists? This will not impact on your other waiting list positions. The reason to accept langbourne is that you could end up with no other offer. I will pm you, Renata -
Hollydale Primary School - what's it like?
Renata Hamvas replied to claredowdy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Clare, I know parents with children at the school, including reception. They seem to be very happy with it. Renata -
Hi midivydale, this information isn't available, but the survey of current nursery to year 5 did show that the larger number of siblings was specific to this year. Hi no 2, there were 30 places allocated on distance. I would expect in a average year, this would be around what you would expect for a 2 form entry in the area. Renata
-
Hi number 2, Hollydale is a good school. It is small, but then it has no nursery and a smaller intake than other schools in the Nunhead area. I would suggest you accept Hollydale, you will still stay on the waiting list for Ivydale and if a place come up, you turn Hollydale down at that point. On factor that could impact on you Ivydale waiting list position is that as it's first year of the school, Haberdasher's free school had an independent application process. People who have been offered this school will also have been offered another primary school via the CAF system. I don't know what the deadline is for parents in this situation to respond, but they could accept their CAF place while deciding about the Aske's one! Renata
