Complaining about traffic on Forest Hill Road
Renata Hamvas replied to TonyQuinn's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Firstly to say that parents parking illegally is a separate issue than speeding and crossing points on the road. Katrusja, I did raise it with the Head following your previous complaint and she assured me she would write to parents on this matter. Illegal parking is a police matter and you could pass your pictures to the Peckkham Rye SNT. I would suggest that it would be better not putting pictures with children in them on the ED Forum as you haven't asked the child's parent/guardian's permission to do so. I will raise the issue with the Head and SNT again. DBboy, I do know there have been accidents at the site (eg Lollipop lady has herself been knocked down) and when I visited with Cllr Hargrove, there was a near miss of a woman with a buggy (heard the brakes and woman screaming but as talking to Councillor Hargrove so I didn't witness the actual event). This was while there was no Lollipop Lady present. The issues with crossing are when there is no Lollipop Lady there (eg Lunchtime for Nursery pupils for both primaries as they do half day, morning or afternoon, and after after school clubs, for local residents at other times and at weekends and secondary pupils, earlier in the morning). There is no crossing point at all where people cross between the P4 and P12 bus routes (round the bend). Tony, where the Lollipop Lady is, is the informal crossing point. The theory of this crossing point was that when the lollipop Lady isn't there, that drivers would see pedestrains standing there and stop, to enable them to cross ie like a Zebra crossing without the stripes. This functions very well on quiet residential roads. As I have said above, I would like to have residents opinion on how well this works in practice in this location. Growley Bear the reason why the OP suggested the Fairlawn and Lewisham be contacted is that both Boroughs have to work together at this site as it's on a Borough border. As Fairlawn haven't raised the issue and apparently Lewisham residents haven't complained to their Council (but I've had complaints from Lewisham residents!), Lewisham haven't been notified of any problems and meetings between the two councils on this matter over the last few years haven't progressed. I know that legally schools have no powers against parking infringements, however reminder letters to parents may prevent at least some of the offending parents parking on double yellow lines, on pavements and at bus stops. Forest Hill Road/Colyton Road Roadworks
Renata Hamvas replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Steve and David, these lights were put in as a temporary measure. Probably if permanent lights were planned from the outset, different ones would have been installed from the start. The replacement of these lights has come from TFL. The temporary light' don't conform with the standards for permanent lights. I suppose it's a bit like arriving at a workplace, being given an old computer to use to write documents and access the web, but it's not being up to scratch; yes it works, but isn't suitable for long term use. Forest Hill Road/Colyton Road Roadworks
Renata Hamvas replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I met with council officers yesterday and discussed this and other road issues within Peckham Rye Ward. The reason why these works were necessary was that the temporary lights, while they look like permanent lights have long outlived their lifespan. They also are inflexible, ie they can only do set timing of the phasings. The new lights are flexible, ie the phases will alter on different times of day and days of week dependant on the traffic levels and pedestrians waiting to cross etc. It should make it better for both pedestrians and road users. It also should reduce the likelihood of jams. Letters did go out to residents, I am aware that very short notice was given. If anyone living near the junction didn't get a letter please contact me.This was unusually short as Southwark got very short notice from TFL that the team working on the East Dulwich Road junction would move up the road to the Colyton Road/Forest Hill Road junction. Complaining about traffic on Forest Hill Road
Renata Hamvas replied to TonyQuinn's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Dbboy, The Lollipop Lady is only there when Primary schools starts and finishes and not at other times (and she has been knocked over, I discovered when talking to her when I was on site with Cllr Hargrove), eg when parents drop pickup from Fairlawn and St Francesca Cabrini Nursery and when they do breakfast or afterschool/sports clubs at either school. Secondary pupils from Kingsdale and other secondaries also cross between the P12 and P4 bus stops (there is no lollipop lady there). Also residents have reported trouble crossing in rush hour, evenings and at weekends. I am aware that the head does write to parents at the school and that traffic enforcement officers are regularly in attendance (residents have complained to me in the past about poor parking practice and I have passed their complaints on to the school). I will contact the Head after the half term break and suggest she reminds parents that they should be parking legally and considerately. Renata -
Complaining about traffic on Forest Hill Road
Renata Hamvas replied to TonyQuinn's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
To update, myself and my fellow ward councillors are totally aware of the situation at the top of Forest Hill Road and want something done to make this area safer. Discussions have been going on for some time. In 2010 the informal crossing point was put in. This is meant to act similarly to a zebra crossing ie that vehicles would stop to enable people to cross. I would like residents opinion on how well or not this crossing point functions. (I have my opinion on this, but I want residents/crossing point users opinions). Southwark Officers have had a number of meetings with Lewisham officers to try to have a joint approach to sort this area out. I am very aware that many people cross just round the bend to go between the P4 and P12 bus stops, including parents pushing buggies. There is not even a central island at this point. Lewisham Officers don't appear to have had any complaints from local residents or from Fairlawn School. Southwark have had the issue raised by ward Councillors, residents and St Francesca Cabrini Primary School. I have spoken to the OP so if you are a Lewisham resident struggling to cross the road or a Southwark Resident whose child attends Fairlawn and find it difficult to cross or are nervous of the speeds on the bend please contact Lewisham (and Fairlawn school if your child attends there). I had discussions with a council officer yesterday, a possible solution could be one crossing point near the P4/P12 bus stops, another one below St Francesca Cabrini School and a rejigging of the junction to slow speeds. It does however require cross Borough co-operation. This is possible, Southwark successfully worked in conjunction with Lambeth to produce a scheme at Waterloo on the Lambeth/Southwark border. Cabinet Member Barrie Hargrove has been to visit site as has GLA member Valerie Shawcross. Renata -

Forest Hill Road/Colyton Road Roadworks
Renata Hamvas replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have contacted council officers about this and gone there myself. The disabled parking in front of the Doctor's surgery is unaffected, as is the northbound bus stop. The southbound bus stop is closed. Parking for the post office, Co-Op etc is largely unaffected (a small stretch, less than one car length for a warning sign). Neilson99 and Ontherye I have no idea why you haven't received notification. Residents living close to the works were notified by letter . Please pm me your details so that I can chase up. The consultation period was for several weeks and I personally spoke to many residents living close to the lights. I have asked as to why these lights needed to be replaced by other ones and am waiting on a response from council officers. The top of the road is an issue, Southwark officers have had a number of meetings with their counterparts in Lewisham. If you are a Lewisham resident keen to have something done her, please contact Lewisham Council. Also if your child attends Fairlawn (southwark or Lewisham resident) and you have issues with crossing here, please contact Fairlawn School or Lewisham Council. Renata -

Another ED primary schools question
Renata Hamvas replied to alimc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi , just to say Alimc and I have been in contact via pm. All primary schools in the ED, Forest Hill, Nunhead area are good, so even if you don't get your preferred school the other schools are also good. Renata -
Delayed primary school starting for summer babies
Renata Hamvas replied to bobby's bear's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Bobby's bear, smiler is right. I know of children who have arrived from elsewhere eg Ireland where they start school a year later. These children go straight into year 1 and therefore miss Reception. In the school system nursery and reception together are foundation stage and then year1/2 YS1. Reception tends to be far less structured than Year1, far more play based with more toys, home corner etc in the classroom. It is a link between nursery and school proper (KS1). Renata -
Delayed primary school starting for summer babies
Renata Hamvas replied to bobby's bear's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You can defer your child starting school until the start of the summer term. If you leave it until September, they would loose their school place under the central admissions scheme and they would go into year 1 and it may not be at a school of your choice. Some schools with attached nursery classes may agree for your child to defer and spend longer there. Renata -
Forest Hill Road/Colyton Road Roadworks
Renata Hamvas replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Neilson, letters have gone out to residents. My posting here is not official as such, I just decided it would be useful to post it on her! I shall raise your comments, about the issues following the other works. I think it would be quite difficlut to divest all the traffic, buses etc. Yes Tony, I agree with you, the top of the hill is problematic, It is quite tricky getting something done about it as it sits on the borough border and it requires economic and personnel co-operation between two councils. Renata -
Thanks Londonmix, I've already pmed the poster! I think they are correct that the most likely school they will get a place at is St Francesca Cabrini (from 2012 entry). stfrancescacabrini.co.uk Ivydale is bulging, but this is to accommodate almost 2 forms worth of siblings and therefore I would suggest that it probably won't have as large a last place distance as 2012 (also a bulge, but not so many siblings so last place distance was larger). Note, this is my personal opinion and I have no idea eg of what impact the Haberdashers Aske's Free school will have on Ivydale admissions as the school is only taking it's first intake in 2013. In 2011, the east side of Peckham Rye Park was too far for Ivydale. Turnham may be another one to look at too, Hollydale in Nunhead and Goodrich (3 forms of entry makes its last place distance larger). IMO all the local schools in this area are good. good schools and help for dyslexic 6 year old
Renata Hamvas replied to wodey's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Wodey, I would suggest an assessment at Bloomfield as have other posters above. http://www.blearning.biz/ They also have lessons there for dyslexic children. If your child is severely dyslexic, then they may get a statement of special educational needs. This would give you priority status in applying to schools ie you can choose the school, if there are places (or go to the top of the waiting list). I would suggest that the best path for you would be formal assessment then statement (if appropriate), primary with dyslexia support. In the meantime, armed with evidence from a formal dyslexia assessment (assuming positive), this should kick your child's current school into action for extra support. Be aware also, that summer birthday children (more so boys, as their wrist control develops later than girls), do tend to be behind their winter birthday classmates. Renata -
Forest Hill Road/Colyton Road Roadworks
Renata Hamvas replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi all, I have been informed the works at the Peckham Rye/Forest Hill Road will be completed prior to the Colyton Road/Forest Hill Road ones starting (I suspect it's the same team doing the works). The ones at the top of the Hill are emergency water leak works (water was pouring down the hill!), I'm trying to find out how long this will take. Dbboy, there was a consultation about the lights, I went and spoke to many residents on roads in the vicinity of the lights about them. From what residents said to me and from the results of the consultation, the vast majority were in favour of making the temporary lights permanent. Renata -
I received this today: Dear Cllrs, Forest Hill Rd / Colyton Rd-Highway Improvement works I write to notify you of proposed traffic signal and highway improvement works at the above junction, week commencing 11 February until end of February. You may recall that the Council consulted residents in March 2012 on whether to retain or remove the temporary traffic lights introduced at this junction to allow access and safety for articulated Lorries during the Thames Water Victorian mains replacement works on Colyton Rd. The consultation responses showed that majority are in favor of retaining the traffic lights. The aim of these works is to make the signals permanent and ensure it conforms to TfL?s guidance on traffic signal junction with pedestrian phase. The main features of the works are: ? Improvements to the traffic lights at Forest Hill Rd/Colyton Rd junction to make it a permanent feature. ? Resurfacing the junction ? Improve the public realm outside the areas shown in the views below We have short notice from TfL that they would like to move on to this site week commencing 11 February, following completion of signal works at Peckham Rye/East Dulwich Road. If we do miss this slot we may not be able to get TfL?s contractor on site until end of March due to their loaded work programme during this time of the year. Moreover the above works need to be completed within the 2012/13 financial year Tentative Works Programme Week of 11 February-Existing traffic lights are removed by TfL?s contractor and replaced with temporary 4-way lights 11th -22 February-Civil works Week of 25 February- TfL?s contractor installs new traffic lights, temporary lights removed from site Traffic management -4-way Temporary traffic lights with pedestrian push bottom (similar to that at Peckham Rye/East Dulwich Rd junction) We would notify residents and businesses of the impending works. We would try and expedite works and minimize any disruption to traffic.

Hi Bee, You can keep your child in nursery or at home until the term after their fifth birthday. However, those with summer birthdays will need to start school at Easter of the reception year at the latest as the next September would be in the following year. If you want some help please pm or email me. Renata
