Hi All, two different parts of the cemetery have been muddled up in this report. The elevation of the burial area is near Wood Vale. Gravestones are not going to be disturbed. A tree survey has been carried out and the majority of larger trees (healthy ones are to remain) and some smaller ones are to have burials around them in that portion of Camberwell Old Cemetery. There will be extensive planting of new trees too, so there will be more trees than at the outset with the majority of mature ones remaining (a few were found to have structural/heath problems when the survey was done). I have visited the site, it is certainly not a wood! It is the strip of land on the Wood Vale side of the Cemetery. It has been used for burial in the past, but there are no gravestones, the land is being elevated around the trees so that burials can be carried out without disturbing the deeper communal graves. There is another area of the Cemetery being discussed at the moment, after this area, towards Wood Vale is full, that is towards the north of the cemetery. There the ground level had already been raised over previous graves for doing burials in some time ago. This is why the land there is higher than surrounding areas (It was prepared for burials and then forgotten). I haven't heard anything about tree felling in this area, the area I saw, was elevated and grass rather than a woodland and within the cemetery, I will be attending a meeting this week when I should find out more. This area is not to be used imminently. With the reuse of these previously used sites there is sufficient burial space for around the next 30 years if the rate of burial v cremation remains then same. If southwark residents decide to no longer bury their deceased loved ones and all opt for cremation,this second area will never be used. The current rate of burial v cremation is around 30% burial to 70% cremation, this rate has remained stable for the last couple of years, but this could change. Renata

Hi everyone, there was a huge turnout yesterday. Following a lovely performance by the Fairlawn Choir, The new Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Althea Smith gave a speech. The man who spoke after her, was Cabinet member Cllr Barrie Hargrove, also present was Cabinet Member Veronica Ward. This Beacon has been in use since 1930. It was a tough job for the two involved in the impromptu lighting of the beacon by flame torch (little firework fuses failed, I think the wood must have been too damp), not easy to hold the torch for 15 minutes in the air or for the man underneath holding the steward on his shoulders! Thanks to everybody who came along, for the Fairlawn singer for their performance, and to everyone involved in organising the event, specially the Friends of One Tree Hill. Hi Fazer71, the majority of shops on Rye Lane are in private rather than council ownership. The historical reason as to why there are so few chain stores on Rye Lane is that it was going to be the route for the Channel Tunnel rail link. Chain stores pulled out, many buildings were bought by the rail company (later sold off when the route was altered) Renata

I'm not aware that there will be any food, I think the event starts at 9.30 with the Beacon being lit at 10pm. I shall be there. Renata ps this is a very old beacon, we funded its renovation from Cleaner, Greener, Safer so it will be great to see it being used :))

To add, Cora is right, any major movement is likely to have happened. Any movement now, is due to applicants being recategorised or moving into or out of an area. Dulwich Jon you don't say which school you are 20th on the list for. Movement does vary beween schools. If it is a school with 90 entry this year, it is more likely to have some movement than a school with 60 or 30 intake. At the beginning there is quite alot of shuffling of places as some children take up slots at fee playing schools (eg a child with place at a school B), there is then a reshuffle of the places freed up eg child with place at school A goes to school B and child with place at school C takes up freed up place at school A, leaving a vacancy at school C and so on. Hi Dulwich Jon, did you apply to your closest primary? With the current demand on primary places, you are more likely to get a place at your local primary, as others further away will be full. If you live near the borough boundary this may be in Lambeth or Lewisham. If you didn't, I would suggest you add your child to the waiting lists of your closest school. Yes, there will be some movement on some (but probably not all the primary school lists). If people move into the area closer to the schools you have applied to, you could find yourself moving down the waiting lists. Sorry Metham777, schools do not pick and choose from waiting lists (if you know of a Southwark school doing that please let me know!). Applicants are ranked by admissions criteria of the school. Applicants can jump up the list due to a newly diagnosed special educational need or if their sibling joins the school. Renata

Please note, comments on the planning application as part of the consultation (ie submitted to Southwark Council) should be on issues such as the size, layout, impact on light, traffic, parking, deliveries etc, and not which retailer you prefer. Renata

St Mary's Pre-school in St Mary's Hall, St Mary's Rd in Nunhead has waiting lists open for 2.5 and 3 year olds for September 2012 entry. Places for September will be allocated on a first come first served basis later in the summer term. The Nursery is open 9.15-12.15am Monday to Friday during term time only. Interested parents are welcome to pop in and visit during opening hours. This pre-school had traditionally taken many children who go on to Hollydale (as Hollydale has no nursery) and other surrounding primaries. As it is not far from Ivydale, this may be of interest to those parents who have not been able to get a place for their child at Ivydale Nursery this year. Renata

There is a string instrument shop on Evelina Rd in Nunhead. It's upstairs on a corner above the ?talking heads music studio (where the haberdashery used to be 3 or 4 doors along from Sopers. The entrance is round the corner, and you need to ring the bell. They also restring violins, guitars etc. Renata

Hi all, unfortunately, this coincides with full Council Assembly, so I am unable to attend. I am planning to attend the Police Ward Panel meeting on Thursday 24th May, at the Honor Oak Baptist Church on Forest Hill Rd (junction with Therapia). All Peckham Rye and Nunhead Ward Residents are welcome to this. At this meeting crime etc issues are discussed with the local police (SNT). Renata

Hi Koolbananas, everyone can respond to a planning application, individuals within the same household can respond independently. All responses both positive and negative are looked at. At the planning meeting itself, however, there is only a 3 minute slot for objectors to an application and similarly for supporters (plus both parties may be questioned). Residents/interested parties tend to delegate the role of spokesperson to one or sometimes 2 people (who share the slot). Ward Councillors may in addition speak on the proposal. As well as council officers, councillors on the committee also read letters submitted as part of the consultation process. Just to point out, I do also comment on issues in relation to Evelina Rd in Nunhead. This like Lordship Lane is outside my Ward, but is an amenity used by residents from my Ward. This, I think occurs naturally as ward boundaries do not coincide with community boundaries. Parts of East Dulwich, Nunhead and Honor Oak are within Peckham Rye Ward. Renata

Hi all, movement on waiting lists do vary alot. I agree with you Sanne Panne, that people who are off to the fee paying sector will already have accepted their places, this is probably where the 5 Open spaces have come from. Last year I was helping parents who were on two waiting lists in the area. I had two families on each, and in both cases they moved down the list. I think people moving into the area plus children being assessed as having a special need and moving up the ranks have an effect. As DVI is infants only, you are going to have less of a sibling effect than at other schools ie sibling gets a place in a higher class in the school and therefore child on waiting list shoots to the top. There was some movement between September and Xmas, due to children not turning up in September (moving house over summer and not telling anyone). At that point, as many parents will be happy with the school their child has started, bought uniform etc, one or two places that come up may go to a child who was fifth or sixth on the waiting list. I have a surgery at ED Community Centre at 10-11am tomorrow. I know I have some parents who didn't get into Ivydale Nursery coming along. The situation hasn't changed, but I'm happy to discuss this parents and come up with suggestions as to what they could do as an alternative. Of course anyone else is welcome to come to see me! Renata
