  2. How about West Dulwich/Gipsy Hill/Herne Hill - Croxted Road being the LL at this end :) it is a stretch but here goes: Evidence so far - plenty of flats in period buildings - Good stock of family homes - mixture of different folk - decent and growing selection of eateries: Beauberry House, The Rosendale, Cafe Rouge, Porcini (an italian for all those after an Italian restaurant), The Florence, Escape Bar, Indian Dining Club, The Mansion, Mango Steen - vietnamese, Blue Mountain (GH branch),Still Luigi's, Olleys fish bar, some ok indians including Passage To India, Red Rose and Indigo @ Gipsy Road and a few more on Norwood High Street, Lombok (Chinese/Japanese)3 Monkeys Restaurant, Provencal, Pullens and quite a few more... - Good open spaces: Belair Park, Dulwich Park, Brockwell Park, Dulwich and Sydenham Woods, Golf Course, Paxton Green - decent shops Just William, www.ourshowhome.com Cheeky Monkeys, Jo Partridge, Half Moon book shop, Curtain Exchange, Dulwich Trader, Dulwich Book Shop, Mad Cow Designs, Eclipse, Phase Eight, Odd Bins, Majestic Wine, Alleyn and Croxted Road garden centres. - Culture - South London Gallery, Nettelfold Hall (theatre within West Norwood library),198 Gallery - And as there are some less elegant parts at the fringes and many of the shop parades (Gipsy Road, Norwood Road, Rosendale Road - Park Hall end) are not that great but things are likely on the way up - The Florence, The Rosendale, The Mansion, Bolands Wine Bar and Number 22 all opened quite recently. - Also there are two redevelopments the first being the Dairy Site behind the Tesco Metro on Croxted Road rumoured to be a mixture of boutiques and gallery space etc... and the MAster Plan for West Norwood High Street. Two new residential developments are being built opposite Brockwell Park both of which are to a very high standard and are sympathetic to the locale. http://www.findaproperty.com/searchresults.aspx?loc=Herne+Hill&minprice=&maxprice=&bedrooms=1&res=0&salerent=0&edid=0&f.x=51&f.y=14 The map below shows the area which is basically those roads sandwiched betweeen Croxted/South Croxted Road (coloured blue)in the East and Norwood Road to the West. Herne Hill is at the top, West Dulwich Centre, Gipsy Hill at the bottom and West Norwood to the West. The main shopping areas are in red. http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/9379/westdulwichareasofshopptn3.jpg I have seen a lot of changes since I have lived here and it seems set to continue. So, go on shoot me down.
  3. I agree on the real ale isde of things - I constantly have a go. Get some decent bitters - Oakham, Crouch Vale or Hook Norton, some Belgian strong ales, a few US micro brewers and finish with some German hefes. Then I'd be content.
  4. Thanks for that really good summary. I think Brockley has a lot going for it. SO to does St Johns - a friend of mine is over that side. It is very close to Greenwich and Blackheath... nice.
  5. pk - I was there (Anchor and Hope) last week for lunch but found the menu a turn off (Snail and Bacon etc..) so went to the Nelson on Union Street which was great! I may return to A&H in the evening perhaps.
  6. I thought the same things as you. I think it's a ref to the residents.
  7. I've only tried to go once but the other half didn't like the tired look of the place. Another recent review in the Independent from a W Dulwich resident no less! http://www.independent.co.uk/living/food_and_drink/reviews/article2904328.ece Something tells me after this award a few of these reviews will themselves be revised upwards. Critics are a fickle bunch.
  8. Yep that's exactly what I thought. But we're confusing DKH and Denmark Hill. Denmark Hill runs to the top and on the way down is Herne Hill.
  9. I know that but I've never heard around there called Denmark Hill. Always Camberwell. The only place I know called Denmark Hill is the Salvation Army campus.
  10. So why does she say Denmark Hill? There's no such place. It's a road going through Camberwell. Anyway, i love that house. I've driven past it a few times and admired it as it is what all modern homes should be - unapolgetically modern, elegant and stylish. Hats off to Mr Eclair!
  11. Where is it exactly? The last pic looks like the black house at the top of Dog Kennel Hill http://money.independent.co.uk/property/homes/article2974657.ece
  12. We're not in Kansas anymore.
  13. >> Perhaps now that Ramsay has closed the restaurant at The Connaught she's looking..................... If only - that would put a rocket under Dulwich's profile. We already have a few bentleys parking out there of an evening. Saw a few really old crusty Michael Winner types in there last night no doubt off the back fo the evening standard article.
  14. It also has a great wooden furniture shop - friend has bought some amazing things from there. To those that deirde other areas, unless you've lived or visit them driving through is not a fair way to assess an area.
  15. I like Cafe Rouge but was disappointed that they opened another. I already have one on my door step! To be honest the one in west Dulwich is much cosier and friendlier. Back on topic has anyone bar myself been to the new Rosendale?
  16. So any news on this site?
  17. Watched my first epsiode last night (episode 2 season 1) It was quite good. Very refreshing to see see many african American actors which obviously maintained a level of perceived authenticity. It was very interesting to see the motivations from all round. Not sure I'd put it up there in the best of category but I did enjoy it so will watch a few more.
  18. Not really my cup of tea to be honest. IMHO Sydenham, Anerley and Beckenham are nicer.
  19. Don't you think it would best to perhaps visit and see what you think yourself and also to be pleased that Dulwich has won such an award? Good grief.
  20. Guys - there's no need for such animosity and vitriol. Just agree to disagree and move on.
  21. >>"A real estate agent" he replied> I knew it....the rest are all figments of our imaginations... And I thought it meant he would earn his money...
  22. Sean - for a number I can no longer count on one hand (we're getting into dangerous territory!) - I agree with you.
  23. In saying that i went there with my son who did like it. The staff were friendly and allowed us to peruse at leisure. They didn't have some of what we were after. In the end we bought a poster of french objects and Goldilocks and the three bears... So yes Sophie probably does work there. But even so, I still think it is a decent outlet. But we have quite a few especially nearer my end - one in the Village, Dulwich Books on Croxted Road and the Half Moon book shop plus some more that I spot when I'm out and about.
  24. I love Chez Bruce but the numbers you gave a. should be ?37.50 for 3 courses and b. doesn't include wine or the discretionary 12.5% so more like ?55 per head. What I gave was all in (including 9 glasses of different wine from a 30 strong list of wine by the glass) and was of a very good quality. It (being the quality) is high enough to perhaps receive a star one day. The winelist http://www.therosendale.co.uk/menu.asp?menu=2689 is charitably marked up too. I can definitely recommend the Viognier and Muscat - sublime. I'd sooner pay that than ?11 for a sandwich.
