  1. You could try Belair House (is that the name of it now?) on College Road for Christmas party venue. We've been to a wedding reception there and it was a nice venue. Sean, why don't you book St. Thomas Moore Hall - great Guinness and get an Irish band in.... we'll all be there!
  2. I take it you are sending in your absentee ballot then? At least we can feel better about trying to get rid of this disastrous administration/political party and a trip up to Grosvenor Square is always a treat!
  3. Goldman Sachs, Citicorp, probably up towards the top. A real disaster - we know a few people at Lehmans - not so much losing the job, but losing the stocks/savings. My heart goes out to those families.
  4. You have to be persistent with getting the council to replace trees. We had a tree cut down at the end of our street a few years ago and I rang almost monthly to remind them (the excuses were that they weren't doing the planting until the fall, then it was winter, then spring, etc). I finally complained that I kept tripping into the hole left in the ground from the missing tree (kind of true as it wasn't too visible in the dimly lit street (another request from said council). They finally planted it and my husband and I went out weekly to water the poor flimsy thing carrying large buckets of water down the street as it was during the hose-pipe ban. Also, we retied the tree a few times against the stake as it was growing a bit wonky. This tree wasn't in front of a house, but rather on a corner close to a junction so I guess no one really felt responsible for it, but because it was I who pestered Southwark incessantly I felt I needed to help it along. Sorry for divulging too much detail of my life with the tree, but it's lovely now.... and was worth it. You must be on the council's case with tree planting as they don't really care and it's us who live here!
  5. Hi Teddy, Agreed that there are some lovely trees in the area, as well as parks with a whole variety of vegetation to admire. Round where we are there are pear trees, prunus or plum blossoms and crab apple trees. Enjoy and welcome to the EDF! -C
  6. Slummymummy - I think it's Turkish you heard, I seem to remember him saying he was originally from Turkey ? Administrator - Did you change my last post to include ****? Other people have used the phrase (see above), but perhaps because I used all caps and it was more offensive? If so, apologies. Sentiment is still the same.
  7. I met the person in question running the fabric shop.... t*****r
  8. What a great idea. Best of luck with the business.

Good God!
  10. Okay everyone relax - don't want a class struggle to ensue on this thread. Forgot to insert an emoticon so :X there! :)
  11. Although midnight to noon would be really handy opening hours!

  13. EDOldie, 12pm is 12noon no? And 12am is midnight? I could be missing something!?
  14. Yes agreed with the previous poster that the deli has been in Harrods for a few years now. Lucky for Harrods!
  15. OOOPS, we are 'friends' of the gallery. I just assumed that the main gallery was free (like most museums in the UK) and the special exhibits were charged. Silly me. Still worth it though!
  16. I've had lunch there with my kids. Agreed it is lovely surroundings and the staff are very child friendly. We enjoy the cafe, but don't eat there every day. The Picture Gallery being free more than makes up for the cafe's prices (IMHO) and is small enough that children don't get bored. I took my 3 year old to the Children in Portraiture exhibit a while back and she loved it and when it was all over we had a treat in the cafe.

It made me sad. Sorry administrator, you might as well put this in the lounge next to the 'Peckham Rye Furtive Camera Perv' thread.
  18. And I wasn't? :]
  19. Sorry Asset, beheading is for murderers, rapists (something very difficult to prove in SA as you need 5 witnesses), drug traffickers and armed robbers. Cutting off one's hands would allow Mr. Somerfield one more attempt at stealing (and thus allowing the Somerfield staff one more go at using him as a punching bag), then he'd have to start using his feet or get an accomplice.

I did, in > fact, I was beaten into a comma for 6 months. This just makes me laugh. My computer came with a spacebar at least! Sorry off topic. :( I just cannot even comment on this thread because it seems so outrageous and people have for some reason become so polarized on the issue. A suggestion would be to adopt the Saudi Arabian model and cut people's hands off for stealing.
  21. Dear MadWorld74, Your post brought tears to my eyes some 5,000 miles away. I'm sorry you went through this as it would be very very upsetting, but like another poster said don't beat yourself up over it the fox cub could have had a dodgy liver to begin with. I'm very torn by foxes because they are indeed everywhere but we as people continue to encroach on their habitat and provide them with food/rubbish. And don't listen (read) to the other stupid comments that people post because they think it's funny. Best wishes, -C

Monica, Just make sure you have your passport with you at all times because in the States they will ask you for ID (usually drivers license) and they may not recognise a UK one (assuming you don't have a US driver's license!). I don't know why we don't use chip and pin in the States. Too complicated perhaps?! :) -C

Zut alors! Safari is checking my spelling whilst I type. Many thanks and sorry to disturb people in this weird part of the forum.

Maybe I'm crazy, but my computer, Macbook Air, underlines words that are misspelled. Am I crazy? Or is my laptop smarter than me? I think you're right PGC, there must not be a spellcheck on the forum as I've seen some big spelling/syntax/grammar mistakes that are more than typos (myself included). ::o

Dear Admin, Question regarding spell check, when I type in the message part of a post my 'English' spelled words get underlined (as if they were spelled incorrectly) and my 'US-English' spelled words don't get flagged at all. What is this? It's taken me a long time to get used to the English spelling of things! Many thanks for what's probably an annoying question on a Saturday. -C
